Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a personal trainer cost near me?

Expect to pay between $35 and $90 per hour for a personal trainer near you. The length of the session, as well as the number of sessions you book in advance, will have an impact on the price. You can often get lower prices per session by booking more of them. Group training also tends to be less expensive than one-on-one training, as is going to the gym instead of having the trainer come to meet you. Trainer certification is also a factor — trainers with more certification are likely to charge more.

It's important to do your research and get cost estimates from several personal trainers near you before you hire anyone.

How often should you see a personal trainer?

How often you should see your personal trainer depends both on your budget and your fitness level. If you’re new to the exercise routine, maybe start with one to three visits per week to establish a good routine and understanding. Talk to personal trainers near you to figure out the perfect cadence for your personal training sessions.

What exactly does a personal trainer do?

A personal trainer is tasked with working with a client to achieve fitness goals. Personal trainers may take clients in a small group or do one-on-one training. Their focus is on fitness goals — muscular capacity, working on cardiovascular endurance, improving flexibility, and even recommending diet changes and at-home exercises. Personal trainers may work with clients in the gym or at their homes, depending on their preference.

How can I find a trainer?

Search for personal trainers near you online, and identify the ones with the highest ratings. Read their customer testimonials, and look at customers’ before-and-after photos (if available). It’s also important to find out whether the trainers sought professional training and certification, if they can adhere to your schedule and if they can train you at a location that works for both of you.

Finally, contact several trainers for cost estimates. This way, you can hire a trainer who not only provides great services but also fits within your budget.

Is it worth getting a personal trainer?

If you have fitness goals that you’re having trouble accomplishing on your own, hiring a personal trainer can be worth the money. People rarely regret getting in shape — even if it costs money. Personal trainers create accountability, as you’ll have to confess to them if you don’t stick to your training schedule. They’re trained to push you just hard enough, and they take your body type and goals into account when creating a fitness plan.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session.

Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

Jonas Seawright is everything look for in a personal trainer, and more. After training with him for only 2 1/2 weeks, I know I will be with him for a lot longer. As a professional athlete, Jonas has not only had experience with every type of fitness, but with many types of personalities as well. This makes him able to train any type of person, and how to successfully do so. Just as, if not more important, Jonas embodies the term "personal trainer." He works on a unique regimen for each client. He is easy to have a conversation with and is also very straight forward with what you need. If he knows you are committed, he will push you past your limits. Jonas is a great trainer and great guy. I highly recommend him as a personal trainer.

I have been with multiple personal trainers throughout the years and can 100% say Tres is above and beyond any trainer I have worked with. I've been working out with him for the past 2 months now and already look and feel better. He is very professional and takes the time to work with you in the gym and even sets up workouts outside the gym for you as well. Plan on staying with him until the end! I would HIGHLY recommend him for anyone looking to improve their fitness and health. Patrick

Out of the few trainers that responded to my inquiry, I selected Jonas. He was prompt with his responses. I was able to schedule a meeting with him a couple of days later to discuss my goals, pricing for his service, # of sessions he conducts a week, etc. One thing I loved most about working with him is he definitely flexible, and you need a trainer with a flexible schedule if your work hours vary from week to week (like mine tend to). He's friendly and a laid back type of individual, but don't let that laid back type of personality fool you! Lol. In 45min he will WEAR YOU OUT! And I'm not saying he tries to kill you or anything. He is VERY attentive when it comes his clients. Jonas makes sure you "feel the burn", however safety is paramount with him. (I had a previous foot injury I informed him about.) If he senses you may be straining with a technique/exercise...he makes adjustments based on that individual's level of fitness. Oh, but don't think he won't come back to that particular exercise a few sessions later! :) I was amazed at how much I improved from week to week...how there were exercises I couldn't do at first or stuggled with badly & then about 3wks later I was able to do. I feel like his style may be different from other trainers. Jonas makes you feel like you have been friends for years. He inquires about your day, the type of work you do, family, personal views on current events, etc. He genuinely cares. He converses with his clients throughout the training session. These convos definitely helped me take my mind off the pain or how sometimes i thought about quitting. When he sees you struggle, Jonas motivates you....he amps you up...and provides that encouragement you need to continue to push forward. The icing on the cake....how many people can actually say they have a professional athlete as THEIR personal trainer?!?! Just doesn't get any better than that. Of course I had to brag to all my friends and family. Lol. I'm glad I chose Jonas as my personal trainer. Because of him, I'm definitely at a higher level of fitness than I was 5 months. If you have personal goals you'd like to achieve whether it be to look a certain way or be able to perform physically...Jonas is without a doubt your guy!

Great personal trainer, gives guidance and really wants you to reach your fitness goals. The workouts are tough! But that’s what you came to do, work hard and get results. Don’t worry though, he pays attention to you to make sure that the workout pushes you, but NOT injure you. He will make sure to check on you through the week to see how you feel and if you are sore gives directions to reduce the soreness so you can make your next workout. He gives advice for nutrition as well. I am very happy with my decision to choose him as my trainer.

I have been working with Trey for about a month now and so far I am very pleased with the results. I do not have the easiest personality to deal with at times, especially since I do not have a passion for working out, but Trey encourages me to continue my reps and push through the workout. It is for this very reason that I needed to get a personal trainer! There have been a few times when I have had to cancel or reschedule due to work conflicts, and Trey has been very flexible. Trey has always arrives early to the sessions and has a positive attitude. He is a great guy to work with!

I have been training with Luke for 4 months now, and trust that he is one of the most dedicated and experienced fitness trainers around. I have always struggled with gaining weight, most likely because I never ate enough. I was weak and very, very unfit. I lacked basic confidence. At that point, I knew I had to make a noticeable change - I had to gain muscle and weight. Over the years I have joined various gyms, fitness classes, etc. but I would always drop off after a week or two, mostly because I never knew exactly what I needed in order to achieve my goals, and the entire process just felt boring and useless. Luke is a rare fitness gem. He is extremely helpful, motivating, and accommodating. He customizes every session according to my requirements, thereby making it fun and challenging at the same time. Following Luke's nutritional guidelines, I have noticed a considerable difference in my eating habits - it's remarkable. However, consistency with exercise alongside diet is a major key here. Additionally, I am much stronger as well as toned. Luke: - Ensures that I am always applying correct lifting techniques in order to avoid injury. - Is very polite, punctual, and reliable - always ready to start a session with everything planned ahead of time. - Is as committed to my goals as I am and, henceforth, the guidance and accountability he provides are really fruitful. With Luke, every day is a new day. He puts me in a position that pushes me to accomplish my goals by feeling engaged, and he never pushes me beyond what I can handle. With him, I know I have started my day just right. I know how tempting it is to think that, 'I can join a gym on my own, I know a few workouts, I know how to feed myself right'. But believe me when I say: 'You need a personal trainer. You need someone who is there to guide you through the process. You need someone who helps you focus on your final goal. It really makes a difference. I have enjoyed working out with Luke and would always recommend him to anyone who is trying to improve their physical appearance and fitness with a committed and encouraging trainer." -Edward Abreu
