Serge catered for our office holiday party. He made a grilled romaine salad, chicken roulade with potatoes and mixed vegetables, and a chocolate tart. Everything was delicious, I was very impressed! I had never had catering done for our office parties before (sadly, we have always just done pizza or something similar), but this was definitely much better for a special occasion, and very reasonably priced. I would not hesitate to use Pure Kitchen Culinary Concept again!

My wedding was a week ago and Top of the City Catering delivered and more. It took me awhile to write this review because I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything. I'm so glad I discovered this company. They are a hidden jewel in the DC area and we really were lucky to find them. My husband and I financed our wedding by ourselves and had a limited budget, and their company was the best value but in no way compromised in quality. Maribel and her husband Noel are absolute professionals and were so wonderful to work with during my planning. They were always so patient with all of my questions, and were very warm and really make you feel special and cared for. They tailored everything exactly the way we wanted, and even accommodated all of our requests like setting aside some specially seasoned chicken without mushrooms for my guest who was allergic to them. The day of my wedding, I was blown away by how beautiful and romantic everything looked. They added lovely little touches everywhere in the decor and the linens were all pressed. Due to unforeseen circumstances, my timeline got pushed back almost an hour. Nevertheless, Maribel and her team were flexible and adjusted without missing a beat. The food stayed warm, looked lovely on the plate, and tasted amazing. They made sure my husband and I remembered to eat, and brought us food and regularly checked on us. At the end of the night, they even packed up the leftovers from the buffet for us to take home. I don't have the professional photos yet of my reception, but as soon as we get them, I'll send over some. Maribel and her team really helped make my wedding a dream come true, and I actually feel a bit sad that it's all over. They really are wonderful people and were a joy to work with, and I wish them much more success in their business. I'm certain they are one of the best and you won't regret hiring them. Top of the City Catering is a class act and I would recommend them to others over and over! Thank you all again so much from the bottom of our hearts!! 😊

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with Chef Jackie. She is a delightful person, who also did a lovely job cooking, serving, and cleaning up for a small (4 people) dinner party. She arrived late, but did call to let us know, and she was ready when the guest of honor and her partner arrived. The presentation was nice, and the food was good. Her chocolate mousse was outstanding! She also did a great job of cleaning up. This is not a knock, but she doesn't stand on ceremony, so if you are looking for very formal service, this isn't it (which fit my style just fine). I definitely recommend her for catering a party, and expect she would be a wonderful teacher for a cooking class.

George was so helpful and kind and really did everything to help make the food portion of my event run smoothly. He was also very considerate in the scheduling process and understanding of the delays that can come along with working with a university where many processes and people have to be involved. In all, everyone really enjoyed the food and it was fairly priced. I will definitely be keeping him in mind for further catering needs!

Owner Richard Cohen is unflaggingly genial, very hands on, and overall a delight to work with. He obviously wanted us to have exactly what we wanted and was ready with suggestions from his years of experience when we were undecided. We have no kitchen at our venue; so he brought in everything, with only a staging area provided by us. The food truly was delicious and beautifully presented. Hot foods were hot, and cold foods were cold. His servers and bartender were pleasant, accommodating, and professional. All included - not just the food but tables, linens, plates, napkins, glassware, everything - he kept our once in a lifetime (50th anniversary) event within our requested budget. I highly recommend Clever Catering. No downside, no reservations. Of course I'd hire them again!

Chef Nikki and team catered a family gathering of mine yesterday. Leading up to the event, she always responded to all of my inquires in a prompt manner. I was a little nervous planning the event and she always made me feel comfortable. I actually feel like I have known her for years which is not the case. The food was fantastic and everyone enjoyed themselves. The mac and cheese was on point! There was more then enough food for everyone that attended and more then enough to take home afterward. The catering company is affordable and I will use them again in the future.

International catering and Events really pulled out all the stops to make the wedding I attended an event for the ages. Customer satisfaction must be a priority because everything was spectacularly done. They added a personal touch to the event that made it extra special and all guests had to do was sit back, relax and enjoy!

I was very pleased with Made with Love Catering. She was on time, the set-up was fast. The food was warm at all times and most importantly she made enough food for the headcount I gave her. I even had a little bit to take home and enjoy the next day! Thank you! :)

I was asked to complete the task of finding a caterer for breakfast for a corporate meeting of 80 people within 4 days and to have them deliver the food before 6am. Thomas Franklin at Columbia Chef Catering was the 3rd business I had spoke to regarding my function. He was so pleasant and when he said yes to the 5:30am drop off I was sold!! Thank you so much for all of your assistance in making our function so much more pleasurable.

Chef Anna did an incredible job catering a wonderful culinary experience in my home for 25 friends. We had some dietary restrictions such as dairy free and gluten free and she curated a delicious menu that satisfied everyone's needs. She was also a pleasure to work with throughout the process - responsive, creative, and extremely professional. I look forward to working with her again.

Pam provides 3 meals for my fraternity each week. She has also catered an alumni brunch for us. She's done a phenomenal job so far and has not disappointed. The food is delivered in a timely fashion with everything you need. Every meal she's made has been delicious and she has yet to disappoint. The meals are all very balanced and she provides plenty of variety. I would highly recommend her for anyone that wants a delicious catering experience.

Where do I begin. I was planning for a house warming event (BBQ style) for a group of 40 people so I submitted a request for catering on Thumbtack. I was a little worried that my limited budget would be a problem to work with any caterer but still submitted my request. I immediately heard back from Suzanne and a couple of other caterers. The other caterers I heard back from were not willing to adjust the menu to fit my budget. Suzanne was so accommodating and willing to customize my menu to stay and work within my budget. She communicated with me until the day of the event asking me about details and any requests I had. She even incorporated spices from my native country. She took the time and effort to learn about a special dish from Ethiopia and made it with perfection. My guests were raving about her food the entire night saying how delicious and flavorful it was. I would hire Suzanne for other events and would recommend her service to everyone I know. It was such a pleasure to work with Suzanne!

DaShawn catered my sister's Sweet 16 party. He made 5 different items that were all delicious. The guests especially enjoyed the salmon cakes and the chicken club sandwiches with turkey bacon. Aside from how wonderfully the food tasted, DaShawn's professionalism was outstanding! DaShawn contacted me with a quote and a follow up phone call within 24 hours of my Thumbtack post. Next, DeShawn made himself available for a tasting and brought several items to my home for a nominal fee. Throughout the process, DaShawn was punctual and he even showed up early for my event. Finally, DeShawn accommodated all of my food allergies with ease. I highly recommend DaShawn Toppin, he was an excellent caterer.

Absolutely impressed with the service provided by Classic Catering! I needed a catering company for a last minute event I hosted and Classic Catering was recommended by a colleague. I called and spoke with Sandy, who understood exactly what I was looking for and needed for my event. She was able to work out the details and arrangements for my party and was a pleasure to work with. I can definitely see myself using their service for future events.

Food was great--I didn't know that the Colada Shop catered, so that was a pleasant surprise. The price was right. I do wish that it came with wire racks/sternos. Also, we paid for utensils and plates but we didn't get any. The sales person said that she would credit that off the bill. I would definitely use the Colada Shop again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
