Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

Do roofers offer remote or virtual services?

To find out the degree to which a roofing service can operate remotely, it’s best to contact local roofers and roofing repair specialists near you.

See if they will schedule a video call so that you can show them the project and get an idea of the cost. This will also allow them to give you recommendations on the type of roofing material, and the best time of year to do the project. You might also be able to book a roof installation or repair service far out in advance.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a roofer when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a roofer, choose virtual platforms like video chats instead of face-to-face consultations. When the roofer is working on your roof, avoid any physical contact, sanitize all involved spaces and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Sound Pacific completed a re-roof on a house I've owned for years. It was an old torch down and now a 30+ year TPO membrane roof. Michael Hedgecock and his crew know roofing. They did an excellent job.

Highly recommend! Gil and his team at Brave Builders are true professionals, through and through. I had done a ton of research on roof replacements and had gotten multiple quotes on replacing my entire roof, before choosing Brave Builders. They have a deep passion for the quality of their work AND competitive pricing. Gil showed up promptly on time, very well prepared, and on the initial walk-through pointed out issues with my roof that even my inspector had missed. The roof looks perfect and I’ve been happy to share their contact info to my neighbors (who keeps complimenting me on the new roof). Gil was very accommodating throughout the project, always communicating the latest status update, and the project was completed on time. He even took me on the roof and gave me a final walk-through of all the details that they had done on it. You can tell by the way Gil was pointing out each of the new roof features, that he is very proud and enjoy what he does. 10/10 would recommend them to anyone!

Those guys came out to put sealant by the chimney, sure enough, they ruined the roof. They told me the roof needs replacement, just to keep their business running. The roof started leaking right after they “fixed it”. I got a pro take a look at it, he told me they messed up some shingles and the leak is coming from there, because those shingles are new and misplaced. Scam, stay away.

I had EY Contractors to come out and install a new roof that was deemed by 6 different roofing companies as "the worst roof I have ever seen in my profession" . EY was picked because they were honest with what I needed, didn't try to panic me into a decision and was very simple and up front about their costs. They were high quality and each step was a focus on the quality. In the end they gave me a roof that is easily going to outlast anything mother nature throws at it for the next 30 years. Anyone who wants to review their work can you use my home as a reference. Very serious here. The work was worth every penny.

Everything about this company is awesome! Ilde the owner is as good as they come. From the time we rec'd our bid to the time our roof was finished was a pleasure working with this company. The price was good and the work looks great! There was one section of our roof that had a bulge and the owner redid that section so that it would look better. Overall, a fantastic experience working with this company.

The contractor was one of the most thorough people that inspected my roof. They sent me a bunch of pictures of areas that need attention. I really like this accuracy, it makes me believe that they're execution is also detail-oriented. For example, they saw that some flashing was bad and they also saw that there are seems on the roof which are coming up. In the end we decided to go a different way, but I would not hesitate to work with this contractor again

My roof had a leak so I needed some repairs. King Roof Care came to do a free assessment and gave me a quote for fixing the flapper vent. Some other companies want to charge a few hundred dollars just to do the assessment, so I'm glad that King Roof Care was able to come and do the assessment so quickly. I thought the price was fair so I decided to hire them to do the repair and also install the gutter guard. It turns out that it was the piper vent that needed the repair, not the flapper vent. Anyway, I wasn't on-site to check the quality of the work, but the team sent me before and after pictures to show the work. They're responsive and can get the job done quickly, so I'm satisfied with their work.

The big snow storm and ice caused a leak in my roof deck, but I did not know the source of the leak in my laundry room at the time. I had 3 other contractors come out and evaluate the problem and they all rushed to judgement the source of the leak was flat area of the upper roof that is in need of some maintenance. Hector came out and methodically followed back the water damage, including climbing thru the rafters in the crawl space to identify the source. While Hector and I were not 100% sure of the source, we were 90% sure it was in this general area, Hector put in an estimate, that I requested him do of fixing a suspect flashing system. Then he went beyond and did a quick temporary fix with flashing on an area in the roof deck and redirected water over flowing from the gutter. The next evening it rained and there was no water leaking in the laundry room. This was a great relief to me, now knowing 100% where the leak had come from. My tile roof needs some deferred maintenance, that I will be getting Hector to do it this summer. Very happy with how Hector responded and followed through. Steven

I found out Jhonathan’s team from thumbtack just a couple of days ago as I had a need to change my roof (almost immediately). Jhonathan showed up for quote as early as possible and he quickly assessed and gave a quote that was competitive and affordable. After accepting the quote, his team arrived and in 2 days they ripped apart my roof and installed new ones. Since daylight was short, they came in on time every morning and worked very fast to finish up the project. We are very happy with the work and Jhonathan’s team did overdeliver. Highly recommended.
