Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I choose the best flooring company or contractor in Seattle?

Start looking for the best flooring companies and contractors in Seattle by comparing the companies’ customer reviews and ratings side by side, looking for details about their professionalism and skill level. It's also helpful to look at customers' photos of their completed floors so you can gauge the quality of the installers' work.

When you start contacting Seattle companies and contractors, ask what types of flooring they specialize in. You’ll want to make sure the company you choose can install the flooring you want -- especially flooring that can hold up well in rainy climates.

Once you've done your research and collected a few estimates, pick a flooring installation service that fits within your budget, has mostly positive reviews and can work within your timeframe.

What's the best type of flooring for Seattle homes?

The best types of flooring -- especially outdoor flooring -- for Seattle homes are ones that can resist moisture, such as vinyl flooring or porcelain tile. If you have your mind set on a wooden floor but your home is prone to leaks and moisture build-up, installing engineered wood might be a better alternative to solid wood, as it will not warp or buckle as easily.

Contact a Seattle flooring contractor or installation company for more tips on choosing the best flooring for your home.

Will installing a new floor make my Seattle home more valuable?

If you install new floors and perform other upgrades in your house, you might be able to increase your home’s value in Seattle. Consider upgrades that have higher resale values. According to the Remodeling 2020 Cost vs. Value Report, a major, mid-range kitchen remodel can recoup 58.6% of the cost and has a resale value of $40,127. Some of the upgrades included in this remodeling project were new resilient flooring, painted walls, custom lighting and more.

What's the best flooring for basements, kitchens and bathrooms?

When installing flooring in your home, keep in mind that some materials are better suited for certain rooms while others are not. Use this guide to help you make the best decision for your home.

Best Flooring for Basements

Basement flooring should be highly resistant to moisture, as many basements are below grade. Choosing the best flooring for basement spaces depends on what they’ll be used for. For example:

  • An epoxy basement floor is a durable finish for concrete.
  • Vinyl basement flooring is generally waterproof or water-resistant.
  • Laminate floors can be an affordable option, but they’re often not 100% waterproof.
  • Ceramic tile floors are also water-resistant.

If your basement isn’t moist, carpet tiles are also an option — just make sure to use a moisture barrier.

Best Flooring for Kitchens

Kitchen flooring does more work than almost any floor in the house, so you’ll want to choose a durable floor. The following are among the best flooring types for kitchens:

  • Porcelain tiles can be fashionable, moisture-resistant, and cost less than stone or wood to install.
  • Vinyl flooring can withstand dents, is generally inexpensive and it’s easy to install.
  • Linoleum flooring can be durable, easy to maintain and affordable.
  • Wood flooring could be damaged by dropped pots and pans, furniture and pets. However, hardwood and engineered wood floors in kitchen spaces are still popular among homeowners.

Best Flooring for Bathrooms

Bathroom flooring must withstand high moisture levels while also being comfortable on bare feet. Here are some of the best flooring options for bathrooms:

  • Porcelain tiles are generally comfortable, waterproof, stylish and less costly than stone or wood.
  • Vinyl flooring is waterproof, cost-effective and can imitate wood convincingly.
  • Natural stone can be expensive, but it’s typically hard and durable.

What is the best flooring for dogs?

Waterproof or scratch-resistant flooring is typically the best flooring for dogs. This includes:

  • Vinyl: Vinyl may not add much to the value of your home, but it is resistant to scratching, stains, dents and accidents. Plus, it’s an affordable option.
  • Tile: Tile is generally water-resistant and scratch-proof, and more affordable than hardwood or stone.
  • Laminate: Laminate is not truly waterproof, but it is tough and often more scratch-resistant than other wood floorings.

Remember that solid hardwood is susceptible to damage, including dents, scratching, licking and accidents. But if you want to install wood floors, the best hardwood floors for dogs are typically made out of maple, Brazilian walnut or bamboo.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

The national average cost to install flooring is $5,500, with prices ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 . Your cost can be much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select, the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed.

Here are some examples of floor installation costs, depending on the material:

Is it worth it to hire a professional flooring specialist?

Unless you have plenty of experience installing the type of floor you want, it is worth it to hire a professional flooring specialist.

The first reason is tools — pros have them, and they know how to use them. Without the proper experience, there is a high risk of injury with nail guns and power saws. A good pro also works quickly, saving you time that you could spend doing other things.

Finally, a pro gets you past options paralysis by helping you decide the best flooring for different rooms and areas of the home.

Andrey and his team are fantastic. My husband and I bought a condo and weren't sure when we would get the keys and be able to put the floors in. Andrey was so accomadating and assured me that he would get the floors done on whatever day we needed. He totally deliverd on his promise. I've never worked with a company that was so nice and so accomadating. On top of that, the floors look fantastic! I would hire Navy Flooring again in a heartbeat and will recommend them to anyone looking to get their floors done. A+!

I interviewed three different flooring install companies. Edgar’s Hardwood Flooring was by far the best choice. Edgar and his team did a sensational job installing my Cali Bamboo hardwood floors. They were punctual, professional, and most importantly very skillful; with full attention to detail. Thank you Edgar!

Ultimate Flooring is the best! If you need flooring call them. Vlad the owner is professional, courteous and took time to answer all my questions.....and I had lots. Very responsive. During quote process David showed up with an N95 mask on and maintained 6 foot physical distancing while measuring and interacting with us, which we are super vigilant about in this time of COVID-19. The day of the job the team showed up and got the job done in 1 day! Quality work! Vlad and team members are honest and don’t try to promise to do work they are unable to do. They do floors and they do a great job! My floors are beautiful and I have other projects in mind for Ultimate Flooring. Hire them, you won’t be sorry!

J&M Company was very responsive and able to start my flooring project almost immediately. They were able to return once the flooring was complete to fix a few stairs that shifted. The flooring was cut inside which left a bit of a dusty cleaning project on my end. I also need to caulk some areas in the bathroom to create more of a finished look now that the flooring is in. All in all I am happy with the end result. I do have some subfloor irregularities which has left a few "soft" spots that I hope will settle with time. Other companies that were 4x the cost mentioned that they would level any uneven areas which was not done but honestly I didn't inquire if this was standard practice before flooring is installed nor did I ask prior to installation. I figured in my newer townhome this would be a non-issue. In any event, I would hire this company again for additional projects if/when they come up.

Tom was a great guy to work with. He was professional, good with communication and put up with my young family around him at times with a smile (which was beyond the call of duty). He paid attention to detail and went the extra mile to get my laminate kitchen floor and basement floor just right. Would hire him again.

He answered all questions patiently and did a fantastic job refinishing my floors. They look stunning! I would definitely hire Precision Interiors again for any flooring work I needed done.

Jose was not only a pleasure to work with, but he really listened to what we wanted for our floors and stairs. He and his crew were professional and friendly, extremely knowledgeable and hardworking. We added a room to the job and they still finished in the original timeframe - amazing! Jose was on top of communication with me from beginning to completion - and even a week after when I put a scuff on the floor and he gladly came and fixed it. Great customer service and fantastic craftsmanship! I highly recommend Otto's and would use them again. Thank you Jose for the beautiful floors throughout house and stairscase too.

Where to start. Pros: courteous, professional attitude, reasonable pricing cons: He did an awful job. I don’t know anything about flooring but he didn’t recommend any sub-leveling, now the floor is all wonky in some places. Edges are cut weird in some places. In the closet he did not make the board come up to the railing so you see gaps. The baseboards also looks bad. I’m very disappointed, At the of this review, Ricky was not available.
