Seth is outstanding. I had a kitchen sink installed and a new main line from my kitchen and connect it to the main sewer line. He was right on the money in the amount of time it took and gave an accurate quote. His responsiveness was very fast. Seth believes in doing the job correctly the first time. He is not out to gouge you like some companies in the area do. Seth also gave me great vibes when I first met him. Great work ethic. Also important to me was he treated me like I was his only customer for the time he was on the job. He also takes off his shoes before he comes in. Or he will put booties on. I learned that because he does that at home. It is a sign of respect in my bookSee more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a plumber during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If possible, it’s best to set up a virtual consultation or phone call with a plumber near during the COVID-19 pandemic. You can send a message to a professional plumber near you and ask if they are available to video chat or have a phone call. Use that time to discuss the work that needs to be done. Make sure to ask any questions you have about the project. And lastly, ask the plumber how they handle payments and whether they have any specific safety precautions in place to comply with social distancing.

How can I find out if a plumber is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Generally, plumbers are often considered essential service providers. Essential service providers vary from state to state and city to city, however. For the most accurate information, check your official state or city government website to see whether a plumber is considered an essential service in your area.

Read CISA’s publication on identifying critical workers to find out more information on a national level. Some, but not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a plumber when social distancing?

Contact plumbers near you beforehand to see if they can complete the project without entering your home — for example, by entering the garage to fix a broken water heater. If the plumber needs to enter your house to do the job, you should proceed only if both parties feel comfortable with the project. Consider taking extra steps such as waving instead of shaking hands, staying 6 feet apart, using digital payments and sanitizing common areas.

Can I use digital payments to pay for plumbing services?

Some plumbers accept digital payments -- Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, etc. -- for their services. Before you hire a plumber, ask them if they accept your preferred online payment. Many also feature digital payment options on their profiles. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, digital payments are typically considered safer than cash and credit cards.

Does a plumber need to enter my home?

A plumber will need to enter your home to fix plumbing issues like dripping faucets, clogged sinks or toilets and leaky pipes. They might not need to come into your home if the faulty appliance is located outdoors or in the garage. Before you begin the project, contact plumbers near you to find out they will need to enter your home.

Do plumbers offer remote or virtual services?

If you see a profile that states the plumber is offering remote services, contact the plumber before hiring them to see what those services include. Although plumbing is a job that has to be done in-person, you can ask them if they offer virtual consultations or an online walk-through.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

What happens when a water pipe bursts?

When a pipe bursts, the water can cause indoor flooding and damage your home. If the pipe is in an accessible location, you will likely notice puddles of water right away. However, if the pipe is underground or behind a wall, it may cause reduced water pressure, a sulfur smell or discolored water. All of this can cause significant (and expensive) damage, which is why you should always contact a plumber near you if you suspect your pipes are leaking.

What do you do if you have a burst pipe?

First, switch off the water supply to reduce the water damage. You should also turn off the electricity for the part of your home that has sustained the leak, as it can be extremely dangerous if the water comes into contact with an electrical socket. Next, drain the remaining water from your faucets so it doesn’t freeze inside the pipes.

Once you’ve done all of this, search for qualified plumbers in your area and ask them to provide you with a quote.

How much does it cost to repair a broken pipe?

The national average cost to repair broken pipes ranges from $120 to $170. Prices can vary depending on the type of damage, whether the pipe is easily accessible, the materials needed and where the pipe is located. For example, an exposed pipe under the sink will likely cost much less than a pipeline in your yard that requires digging.

Your overall cost will also depend on the hourly rate of the contractor. Most plumbers charge between $60 and $65 per hour for standard pipe repair, and up to $95 per hour for complex plumbing work.

Mike did a great job fixing my bath tub. He was able to work around my schedule and made it super convenient for me. He was extremely personable and friendly making it feel like I had a buddy coming over instead of a plumber. If I ever need help with my plumbing again I will probably just call him directly.

James was an absolute pleasure to work with. We are very inexperienced, first time home owners who needed help with a leak and shower/tub update. James took the time to understand our issue, explain process and reassure us of the work that needed to be done. He didn’t add any extra fuss and got the job done right! Great value for the hard work he and his colleague put into our plumbing rebuild.

I was very happy that James came out to do an inspection on my plumbing. He really put my worries at ease, and gave me reassurance that issue was an easy fix! I was definitely pleased to hear the news. I’m so very grateful and thankful that his price is reasonable. He was very thorough in explaining to me all areas of my concern. I would definitely hire him again and refer him to friends and family.

James came to take a look at our dishwasher water connection situation and suggested a Plan A that would not require us to hire him. If Plan A were not to work Plan B would be for us to hire him and his team to help us. Well, his Plan A worked so we do not need his service this time. I really appreciate his honesty. He will our the first person to call when we have other plumbing problems.

Sewer backed up for the last time that I wanted to deal with it myself. So I submitted the request and Shane was one of the first to respond. I requested to speak with him due to the nature of the situation and he was very quick to reply with contact info. Upon speaking with him I was able to get answers to questions and a decent ballpark estimate which is something most companies will not do without sending a technician out. Shane on the other hand was very helpful and informative over the phone, not something you’ll find elsewhere. He is very polite and friendly, I felt more like I had a friend over who fixed my sewer line rather than a tech just wanting to make a buck. After clearing the line he was able to get a look with a camera and found that the pipe is broken (old concrete). I have scheduled to have him out to fix the line later (have to get permits, excavator and such first). I would highly recommend Shane for any plumbing issues you might have. Especially if you’ve got an estimate elsewhere, call Shane before you have anyone else do the work.

I had contacted Hunt's through Thumbtack to come out and take a look at some plumbing issues that were called out by an inspector while selling my home. In my project description I lead off with that I'm selling my house and listed the items I needed to have checked. Hunts responded back, not a problem we can send someone out the next day to take a look. We normally charge a $59 fee to take a look but will waive it because of covid right now. I think great, please come take a look and give me an estimate on the work. So fast forward to when their service techs show up. He begins to tell my wife that because we're selling our home and they never make any money on these kind of estimates. That he's going to need over $150 to climb into the crawlspace of our house to inspect the pipes for the estimate, and that we will need to pay almost $400 to scope the pipes so he can give us his estimate. My wife kindly declined and that ended our experience with hunt's service. Now I would of gladly paid the $59 that they originally said they normally charge to do an estimate and did just that for another company that had came out earlier that day. Or if they would of been honest about their pricing up front it would save us both a good amount of time. I can only imagine the extras this company would of been charging if we had gotten an estimate from them. Do yourself a favor and stay away from hunt's.
