Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

I highly recommend Brooklyn Roofing. It is a small company so they can keep their costs down. And Tanya at Brooklyn Roofing is quite a big help.

I contacted three contractors and received estimates for wind damage repair and a leak in my roof. Alex McMillan III with AWD Roofing shows up with his son at their scheduled time. Assess the repairs, gives me a quote and let’s me know that they can return the next morning to finish the job. AWD had the best price and caught every issue including some hidden problems and repaired them as well. Alex and his son located matching tile from across town replaced the roofing paper with quality roofing material, secured the caps, and repaired the leaks. Thank you, Alex III and Alex IV for a job well done.

We noticed there was a missing tile on our roof and indeed need to fix asap, Ricardo has responded to my request very quickly as we only were in town for a couple days and despite a busy schedule, he came by and did a full free inspection of our roof then came back another day to repair not just a missing tile but also other 3 areas in a short amount of time which we are very impressive. He also charged with a fair cost not too expensive compare to other companies. I would highly recommend Ricardo to help you if you ever have any problems with your roof. Thank you again Ricardo for your service!

Ricardo showed up on time and was very personable and professional. He gave us a re-roofing estimate along with other pricing for mounting our TVs, fixing our shower and troubleshooting our sprinkler system. He does it all.

I cannot recommend this company more. I called them to address an item from a home inspection where the inspector provided a fuzzy picture from a drone saying we had an issue with our roof flashing. They went out to inspect it and found no issue. It is very refreshing dealing with a company that is forthright and honest and doesn’t take advantage of a situation.

This was the first time Ive had to have a roof installation. I had several estimates and they were in the middle. I must say they were the ABSOLUTE BEST guys to work with. Extremely informative about what he was going to do, the materials he was going to use and why and their attention to detail is what I really admire. These guys are great and I would recommend them for any job. Thank you

Great experience. Most roofers are not really willing to work with you on items like budget and needs. They just tell you the cost and scope of work and that's that. JWF worked really hard to work with my budget and gave me some amazing advice and service. I feel so much better about my roof because I went with these guys. Thank you so much!

Updated from my last review: I thought Lonny did a good job on fixing my roof. So I give him a good review cause he asked me to. He fixed my roof on 12/11 and I thought everything was good but when it rain on 12/23 I noticed the leak was still there. On 12/11 He charged me $775 and told me he used good products to fix my leak. He told me he knows where the leak are and after he fix my leak I won't have any more problem. The leak in my mom room came back but this time it is wider and longer than the last leak. And two new spots next to the old leak in the garage came back. He told me it will cost me another $725 to fix the leak in my mom room cause it a new leak. I don't know what he did he probably caused a new leak and now want me to pay him more. I don't recommend Lonny to anyone. Unless you want him to milk your money.
