Jon orchestrated a fantastic evening for some close friends on a recent trip to Arizona. He quickly responded to my ( late) request for a private chef for our trip to Scottsdale. He presented a comprehensive proposal with fair pricing. He arrived promptly and began setup. That's where the wonderful experience blossomed. We had delightful, tasty appetizers, served with beautifully chosen wine pairing. The meal did not disappoint. We were further treated to a delightful salad with locally sourced ingredients, followed by perfectly cooked filet mignon. The molten chocolate cake was phenomenal. Again, all courses were paired expertly with wine and served by Jon with impeccable timing. This dinner became the highlight of our trip. I can't wait to use them again for a cocktail party. Recommend without reservation. Of note, Jon brought additional serving dishes that complemented our some what meagre selection at the house, elevating the meal. Kudos and many thanks!

My parents told me it was a wonderful experience, they enjoyed the food Doreeda made and served! And because it was a surprise, my dad had been guessing all day as to what it was, made it super fun! Thank you Chef Doreeda for a job well done!

Everything went well. Great experience. Everyone loved it. The chefs were great and intermingled with the staff and attorneys. Couldn't have asked for a better experience. Plus the food was outstanding.

We had a lovely Christmas Party catered by Unique Luxury Catering. Chef Steve helped me pick out the perfect menu for our venue. Carol Ann coordinated everything: chairs, tables, linens, food, ice. Everything was included which made my job easier. Chef Alice prepared items which satisfied us all, including those that were vegetarians. The service was incredible. They were friendly and took care of all of our needs. Great job! Rose

We had a family reunion of 15. Chef Jim provided not only a menu worthy of a 5 star restaurant but turned the entire evening into a gourmet food show complimented with printed menu, detailed verbal description of each dish being served and fabulous table service. Our 5 course dinner was fantastic and enjoyed by everyone. Chef jim and his assistant also dressed the part! By the time he left, the kitchen was sparkling clean and in perfect order. We will definitely use his services again. Paul M

Sandra and her staff were professional, courteous and attentive. She set up a gourmet style dinner for 50 guests for my daughter's birthday party. I was impressed with the quality and presentation of her food and so were all my guests. What I really liked about Sandra was her integrity to not only make sure every detail was perfect but also keeping me updated every step of the way and going out of her way to provide more than she promised. For example, she secured a pastry chef for my daughter's birthday cupcakes as an added service. She also brought extra staff to insure there were servers available to refill drinks and help serve guests (which was above and beyond my expectations). I didn't have to do a thing. She came in, set up, tore down, cleaned up and even packaged leftovers for us to keep. Sandra also made alternative dishes for my guests who requested it without hesitation. I would recommend her for any event big or small as she clearly is well connected in the area. By far the best private chef in the valley. Wow! Wow! Wow! Sasha went above and beyond. She was very easy to work with, accommodating, and just the right price too. She helped me to plan a surprise cake decorating birthday party for my Mom. I'm up in Wyoming and she was able to even bring some extra supplies (wrapped cute too) as a gift. It made the day very very special. I know I will hearing about this day for years!! And seriously, what a fun treat to have a personal chef in your home?!

Chef Stacey catered an ASU graduation party for 15 people at a private home, and did an excellent job. We are from out of state and it was nerve-wracking to hire a caterer sight unseen, but Stacey put me at ease, coordinated beforehand, arrived on time, and presented a beautiful spread of delicious food. She is excellent at details - the skewers had little curled ends; the cucumbers in the veggie tray were scalloped; the artichoke dip was homemade. I paid for a higher-end appetizer buffet and she did not scrimp on quality in her food choices. As one of many examples, the fruit plate didn't have just "the usuals," but included some higher end fruits such as blackberries and raspberries. The meat and cheese tray was similarly high-end. Desserts were beautifully displayed and delicious. The quantity was very generous and we were able to offer some extra food to my daughter's college-student friends on their way out. Highly Recommend!

I contacted AZ Caterer about our Employee Appreciation Luncheon for our department in a large City. Being a gov't agency, our budget is limited, however Chef Vic worked with me to make our catering wishes come true. We have done bbq food for the past 8 yrs or so through a restaurant, but decided to go with Thanksgiving style meal this year. I was a little nervous, as we were expecting over 160 employees, but Chef Vic did NOT disappoint. Not only have I had employees just rave about the food, but the service and the attentiveness of Vic and his staff as well. The food and setup was beautiful and delicious! Everything appeared and tasted to be completely from scratch and we could have not been happier. The City will definitely be using AZ Caterer in the future, and I am sure many of my staff will reach out for personal events as well!

We had a great 87th birthday party for my mother-in-law in out rental home in Scottsdale with Anna as our personal chef. She was very easy to communicate with, arrived exactly on time, her dinner was fabulous and she didn't stress out when the ovens were not working properly. Anna stayed extra time since the dinner took longer to cook and she was a great sport. I highly recommend her.

I hired Christine for my wife’s birthday and she did an amazing job! Everyone who was there are big time foodies who love to cook. Everyone was so impressed with the menu (I’ll talk more about this in a moment) that we’ve already decided to hire her again for a couple future get-togethers. As to the menu, she has several suggestions to choose from though what you decide on follows what can be as in-depth a discussion as you like. We have some very real life-threatening food allergies in the family and Christine came up with very creative (and very delicious) ways to adjust the menu. So let’s talk value. For the time Christine spent on us and with us, coupled with the appetizers, salad (salad is not an adequate description for what she made) main course and sides, plus dessert!! Could’ve paid the same for a high end restaurant with far less food, much less time and not had the ability to relax with friends and family at a very leisurely pace... Yeah, I said plenty of food... Everyone went home with a to-go container (supplied by Christine). She’s such a great personal chef with amazing personality who doesn’t mind half the guests asking 20 questions while looking over her shoulder. Plain and simple, want an amazing dinner of your choosing away from the stuffiness of a high end restaurant?? Hire Christine, you definitely will not be disappointed...

My first experience with a chef for my husband and myself anniversary and it was great! The food was moist, juicy and seasoned well. Those are picky issues I have with trying others food and she delivered. She also did a nice consultation to make sure we were getting a meal that we would enjoy! Can't wait until the next session chef Jacquelyn!

We had our annual St. Patrick's Day Luncheon, I have to say I was a bit nervous. But instead it turned out to be the greatest experience, everything was here on time, everyone raved about the food that was served especially the corned-beef, the Shepard's pie and Lasagna was also a great hit. THANK YOU Gracie Parker Fine American Cuisine for a great experience, I would recommend you to everyone who asks about catering services.

I hired Holly as a private chef for a dinner in Scottsdale, AZ that I was hosting for 15 ladies. The event was a bachelorette party, and as I was planning ahead, I figured it would be difficult (and expensive) to figure out reservations for 15 people. I am from OH so I got on thumbtack to look at prices for chefs to come to the home we were renting and prepare a meal. Shortly after inquiring about her services, Holly got back to me and was very accommodating to what I was looking for. She was so sweet and prompt in her response and just gave me good vibes. After discussing our budget, she came up two potential dinner options (Italian option or Mexican option). A week or two prior, we decided on Italian and she prepared a delicious dinner. For appetizers: Guacamole Bowl of Love with pomegranate, cilantro + heirloom cherry tomatoes White Bean Hummus + Veggie Crudite Artisan Meat + Cheese Board Dinner: Spinach + Asiago Cheese Ravioli Pesto Noodles, Spicy Sausage + Arugula Lasagna with buffalo mozzarella French bagguette garlic + rosemary bread Kale + Romaine Caesar Salad with heirloom tomatoes Food was amazing!!! And for $40/person, her services included shop, set up, prep, and clean up. Totally affordable and well worth it. Holly was such a pleasure to work with. Highly recommend =)

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

    • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
    • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
    • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
    • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
    • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
