Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.

Ms. Amahni is a phenomenal math tutor! As a tutor she is engaging, patient, and willing to change her approach to meet the learning style of a child. Your child’s improvements are personal victories for her and it shows. She communicates quickly, clear with billing and provides notes on sessions. I can’t speak highly enough for what she’s done for my kid’s math skills and confidence in math.

She's wonderful! I haven't needed Math tutoring for any of my previous degrees (I have a B.A., Ed.M, and Ed.D), I'm an educator by training, and I have taught math before. So I wasn't sure what to expect, all I knew was I needed help brushing up on my math in anticipation of the new MBA program I'm going to be starting in the Fall. Finding the right tutor is critical so I interviewed/worked with a number of them before I finally decided to go with her. She was an excellent tutor. I felt like I learned a lot in our very first session and her approach to the material made it easy for me to understand. I understand that there have been some comments about language - I don't think that is an issue. She knows her stuff and if you listen to what she says your math will definitely improve. As a math teacher, educator, and now student I fully endorse her.

I met with Li this past Saturday and I felt that she was very knowledgeable on the subject (math). I really appreciate her taking her time to explain to me the steps and she was very patient doing so. I would recommend her to anyone struggling with math. I’m looking forward to scheduling another tutoring session with her!

I’ve had lessons with Douglas for several weeks now, and he lives up to the name “Tutor with the best.” I hired him to prepare me for the praxis core math exams, and he has done wonderfully in helping me prepare.

I’m in my 30’s and haven’t taken a math class in over 13 years. To be quiet honest, I didn’t even know where to start when looking at a math problem, which led me to Laila. I needed to be caught up on how to solve intermediate algebra and geometry problems. She broke down a lot of different types of equations and simplified them in a way that I was able to understand and remember. She’s managed to catch me up from high school math to college math in a months time. I truly don’t think I would be passing in this math class without her help. So far, I’ve only worked with her for three weeks and in those three weeks I went from all F’s to passing, so I can only imagine how much better I’ll get by the end of this semester. Shes given me the confidence to look at a new problem and solve it. I can without a doubt say her tutoring skills are worth every penny and more. I never thought I could get as far as I have, so my advice to anyone considering a tutor should absolutely hire her for the job because not only is she worth it but having a passing grade is too.

Daniel was an excellent source of help! With his help, my daughter was able to pick up her grade. He is great at accommodating to the methods you need, meaning he is flexible in how he teaches. The best part is he is always looking to find the easiest methods for you to solve math problems. His explanations are thorough and well-expressed. It also doesn't hurt how easygoing he is. It places you in a comfortable learning environment. Additionally, he's quite flexible if plans ever change last minute. Ultimately, he is one of the best math tutors you will ever find.

After a couple less-than-stellar tutoring experiences via Thumbtack, I feel incredibly fortunate to have found Sol. My tutoring needs were somewhat unusual: after a 10-year hiatus, I needed to reacquaint myself with high school math in order to pass a placement test into a college-level calculus I course. Far easier said than done. Sol was up for the challenge, and knew just how to tackle it. After I had diligently dug out of my old textbooks from my parents' garage, Sol offered an anecdote about his dear friend and and former Cal-Tech college roommate when he was confronted with modern-day high school math. (Sol, you see, is not only an incredibly savvy tutoring professional, but also a retired JPL scientist--and a thoroughly interesting, thoughtful and personable man to boot.) As Sol's anecdote helped to illustrate, the scope of high school math has evolved in recent years, in ways even the former president of Hughes Aerospace, in a moment of complacency, would fail to appreciate. Pre-Calculus theses days focuses much more on the interpretation of graphs, and introduces concepts such as solving and plotting the inverse of linear and rational equations, which wasn't even taught when I took the course circa 2000. At Sol's request, we set aside my old textbooks in favor of modern coursework that he provided. It was a few months later, at our last lesson, that I was able to truly appreciate how much Sol cares about his students. In his office, I happened to glance at a computer window where Sol had a folder with my name and files charting 'Goals', 'Progress' and 'Notes'. Sol's hard work and investment in my success paid off: on my placement test I scored a 98%--surpassing the score I had needed for calculus I and placing me into calculus II! As Sol predicted, the test had focused quite extensively on those more modern facets of pre-calculus that he had taught me. Now in calculus II, I feel utterly prepared, and only have Sol to thank. *Highly* recommended.

Daniel and his tutors are true pros that know their subjects inside and out. Daniel has always responded to my texts and emails quickly and clearly. I've referred him to several friends, especially for his expertise with higher level math, such as high school and college calculus, and AP computer science. My friend's son was drowning in his USC calculus class which he needed to pass to graduate. Thanks to Daniel's team, he finally passed that course that he had previously failed and dropped. I think his calm and focused approach is helpful for students who are struggling with tough technical subjects. Definitely go with Daniel if you want your kids to really learn those challenging subjects with an experienced guide!
