Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a wedding officiant during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The safest way to conduct a consultation during COVID-19 is virtually. Ask wedding officiants near you if they can have a phone call or a virtual appointment over video chat. If they can, make sure to ask them any questions you have about upcoming work. Discuss what precautions, if any, they have in place to ensure safety. You might consider asking if they accept digital payments or if they can complete the work remotely, without any in-person contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

Can I use digital payments to pay for wedding and event photography services?

As digital forms of payment and money transfer are becoming more popular, wedding and event photographers are likely to use digital services. These include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more. As you search online for local wedding and event photographers, ask them if they accept digital payments and, if so, which ones you can use. And make sure to have a strategy in place for safe social distancing.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

Do wedding officiants offer remote or virtual services?

Reach out to wedding officiants in your area, and ask them if they can offer a remote or virtual ceremony. Some officiants may be willing to meet in person while maintaining 6 feet of distance, while others may prefer to conduct the entire service over the phone or a video call service such as Skype or Zoom.

Familiarize yourself with the social distancing rules in your community, city and state, and move forward only if both you and the officiant are comfortable with the arrangement.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Ernie was amazing at our wedding!! We hired him a week before the wedding and he was able to make it to the rehearsal dinner! He prepared an amazing ceremony in one week. We also decided to do a unity cross, we have him the information for it and had him include it in the ceremony. Everyone talks about how much they loved our ceremony!!

If you're looking for one of the best DJs around, hire Rick! We just did for our wedding 10/28/17, at which he also MC'd, and he did such an AMAZING job! He was flawless in executing our songs, sticking to the timeline, and even added some fun flare of his own, which everyone loved. We got tons of compliments on how well of a job he did, and how nice, and professional he was. He went above and beyond his duties, offering us his advice on setting up our timeline, and was very thoughtful too to suggest different things we could do in place of the traditional wedding rituals when he heard of my husband and mine's recent losses of family members. He was punctual, and flexible, and just a total pleasure to have there helping us on our special day. Thank you so very much, Rick, for all you did for us for our wedding!!!

I hired Nicole as my wedding photographer and I am SO glad I found her!! She is the best! She is kind, professional, and straight up down to earth. She responded to all my emails and texts promptly which gave me relief that I was in good hands hiring her since we hadn't met in person yet. We met in June and she shot our engagement photos. At first my husband and I were super awkward and didn't know what we were doing. Nicole turned on our favorite jams and made us laugh which then helped her capture some naturally beautiful photos! I printed these photos and used them for my bridal shower and wedding and now they are up in my home so we can reminisce. She showed up to my wedding venue early and ready to rock n roll. Her and her second shooter were so professional and awesome throughout our wedding day. They were both able to direct our crazy bridal crew and shoot quickly. She sent me a sneak peak at the edited photos the next day and I already fell in love with them! I cannot wait to see the rest. If you are looking for a rad photographer, look no further Nicole is your chick! Thank you Nicole for all your hard work and talent. Looking forward to working with you in the future! XO

My sister hired Vanessa Arias (Instagram : @bibbidy_bobbidy_beauty) as her wedding hairstylist. She did a trial run a few months prior to her wedding on 10-18-19. The wedding planner confirmed with her 3 days before the wedding and she confirmed to do the bride and 5 bridesmaids’ hair. The day of the wedding - we realized she was no call no show. I finally get ahold of her and she thought it was for the next day (10-19-19). At this point I just wanted a verbal confirmation that she was still coming, at least to do the bride. Her first appointment was at 9:30 am and she did not arrive until 12:30 pm. Meanwhile there were 5 bridesmaids who still needed their hair done with only 3 hours to go and some still needed makeup. It was a stressful nightmare. We were scrambling to find a replacement. It was too last minute for anyone to come to our Airbnb so we ended up going to a salon 10 miles away. This caused 3 bridesmaids to be 45 minutes late into photos. There are so many photos we did not get, I don’t even have a professional photo with my sister or parents with the bride etc. She said that in all the years she’s been doing hair, this has never happened before. I get it, people make mistakes and no one is perfect. But such a minuscule detail as getting the wrong date had such a spiraling and domino effect on my sisters wedding day. The stressed she caused the bride and the wedding party should not to be taken lightly. It is a customer service industry and word of mouth goes a long way. You would think a person who makes a mistake to this caliber would do anything and everything to make it right to the customer. That is what upsets me the most - she charged my sister full price and a traveling fee on top of that, even after the huge inconvenience she has caused. She may have been apologetic to the bride but when I texted her to address the matter I had no response or apology. Yes she drove 3 hours round trip and still did the bride’s hair, but at what cost? We were all stressed out and she only did 20% of services she agreed to provide. I am not here to bash Vanessa, I found her work via Instagram and thought she was very talented, but doing great hair only goes so far, especially if you are trying to run a business. There were six very unhappy clients that day and felt like our business did not matter to her. I simply want this story to be known as I would hate for this to happen to someone else. I personally would not recommend her services as she was unprofessional, unreliable, and unable to perform services promised through contract.
