Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a personal trainer cost near me?

Expect to pay between $35 and $90 per hour for a personal trainer near you. The length of the session, as well as the number of sessions you book in advance, will have an impact on the price. You can often get lower prices per session by booking more of them. Group training also tends to be less expensive than one-on-one training, as is going to the gym instead of having the trainer come to meet you. Trainer certification is also a factor — trainers with more certification are likely to charge more.

It's important to do your research and get cost estimates from several personal trainers near you before you hire anyone.

How often should you see a personal trainer?

How often you should see your personal trainer depends both on your budget and your fitness level. If you’re new to the exercise routine, maybe start with one to three visits per week to establish a good routine and understanding. Talk to personal trainers near you to figure out the perfect cadence for your personal training sessions.

How can I find a trainer?

Search for personal trainers near you online, and identify the ones with the highest ratings. Read their customer testimonials, and look at customers’ before-and-after photos (if available). It’s also important to find out whether the trainers sought professional training and certification, if they can adhere to your schedule and if they can train you at a location that works for both of you.

Finally, contact several trainers for cost estimates. This way, you can hire a trainer who not only provides great services but also fits within your budget.

Is it worth getting a personal trainer?

If you have fitness goals that you’re having trouble accomplishing on your own, hiring a personal trainer can be worth the money. People rarely regret getting in shape — even if it costs money. Personal trainers create accountability, as you’ll have to confess to them if you don’t stick to your training schedule. They’re trained to push you just hard enough, and they take your body type and goals into account when creating a fitness plan.

What exactly does a personal trainer do?

A personal trainer is tasked with working with a client to achieve fitness goals. Personal trainers may take clients in a small group or do one-on-one training. Their focus is on fitness goals — muscular capacity, working on cardiovascular endurance, improving flexibility, and even recommending diet changes and at-home exercises. Personal trainers may work with clients in the gym or at their homes, depending on their preference.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session.

Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

Ging is hands down one of the best personal instructors I've ever trained with. I've only been going to her studio for a few weeks, but I feel stronger and more confident being in a gym space. When we are training she is 100% there and has always taken into account my injuries and personal conditions, suggesting modifications and things to look out for. She is super relatable, engaging, and creates a very non-intimidating environment to train in. I cannot recommend her enough!

Joe has been very patient with me, this being my first time using a personal trainer. He keeps me honest by monitoring my daily progress and encouraging me to make small changes for big results. I am more comfortable working with him than I thought I would be with a personal trainer. I'm looking forward to the results I will see working with him. Ronny is a great personal trainer! For me, the first important step towards a fitness journey is consistency. Ronny will tailor the workouts where you will look forward to the next session because it’s not too hard for the client. She is a good trainer for those wanting to start their fitness journey as well as for advanced training. I started seeing results in as little as 3rd or 4th session and I am very excited to continue after the holidays! Aside from all these, you will get value for your money as she is not very expensive and will even give you discounts or free sessions! I am glad to have found Ronny as my personal trainer and I look forward to our future sessions!

Training with Scott is a life changing experience. He is absolutely the best personal trainer I ever have. He is knowledgeable and responsible. I feel like I'm in good hands right after first session with him. I can be so focused on training cuz he has the processed planned for me. And when I have any question, I just text him, and he is soooo nice that he answer each one of them. I've been training with him for 3 weeks so far, I can feel my muscle growing and my body having more energy. I'm sure as long as I don't move too far, I'll keep training with him. I highly recommend him to anyone that want to switch to a more healthy life style and thinking of hiring a personal trainer to help achieve any fitness goal. I don't know about other trainers, but I do know this one is GREAT :).

Evelynn is great! I hired her to be my personal trainer and it definitely was a good decision. I asked her to be tough on me and she has been doing that. At the same time she is really friendly and considerate of your goals.

Excellent personal training. Fit Akademy really cares and goes above and beyond to help you achieve your goals. Small and private gym that feels more personal. Highly recommended! The workouts are fun, led by someone who give hands on instant feedback and adjustments during the workouts and just the right amount of encouragement. The music is blaring and the atmosphere is awesome. You will not do the same workout twice and if you go you will see the results no question 🙇🙇🏻‍♀️

I had a really good experience working with Dima.I trained with him for almost 9 months. He is friendly, punctual and know all the nuances of strength training. He used to explain my doubt again and again without getting irritated. I gained strength a lot and proper form in squats and deadlifts. I would suggest to keep measuring your progress strictly to make quicker progress. I didn't measure my progress consistently so I didn't gain the enough muscle Mass or the body that I was expecting after 9 months of personal training. But, overall experience was great.

Hands down the best trainer in bay area! My fiancé and I were looking to get into shape before our wedding and both of us had different fitness goals. Scott tuned our diet and workout according to our personal goals, which is not easy. From Day 1 he was amazing! He not only trains you physically, but also how to become strong mentally. I personally had not worked out for years and Scott's method of training was just great. He is very very very knowledgeable and knows exactly when to push hard and when to give some leeway. He provides you with all the personal attention you need. 4-5 weeks into training, our thought process for the workout changed completely from "just something we wanted to do before wedding" to overall health and fitness of the body. It was amazing to see our physical and mental transformation. Apart from that, Scott is very very personable. He would listen to your goals and concerns and motivates you always. We are so glad and feel so lucky to have found him! Cheers!

Stephen is very energetic and very passionate. After a discussion to explain what I (don't) know about health and nutrition, we were on our way! Some personal and business issues have interrupted the regularity of my training, July will be rough, but soon we'll be on a more regular schedule which I know will bring me closer to my goals.I'm excited!!

I could not have ended up with anyone better than Scott. Since our initial conversation to today Scott is dedicated, hard working, motivating and personalizes each workout to fit where you are at. This truly has changed my life for the better. I would hire and work with Scott over and over again and highly recommend this Champion as your next personal trainer and motivator.

When it comes to a trainer, fitness and the gym, I was super intimidated by it all. I always felt nervous trying to get fit, especially feeling like I’m going to be judged by others. I never felt confident that I would be able to get strong and truly feel confident in my own body so I just neglected my own physical health. However towards the end of the last year I was determined to change my lifestyle around and wanted to get back into health & fitness. When I was looking for a personal trainer my fear was feeling more uncomfortable and wasting my money and time. However my perception of the fitness, the gym and having my own personal trainer completely changed when I met with Raymond! First of all, Raymond is full of joy and energy! I instantly got along with him the moment I met him! I think it’s always important to find a trainer who can bring a little fun & enthusiasm but Raymond exceeds that haha. I always enjoy coming into my workout sessions with him & always leave feeling really good both mentally and physically. In addition, Raymond really puts his clients first and I really appreciate that about him. He is extremely understanding, honest & caring so I never felt hesitant when talking to him about cancellations, rescheduling, etc. I truly am glad I made the move to look for a trainer & thank you to Thumbtack, I got to meet such an incredible one! You will not regret this! It will be one of the best investments you make for yourself (:

My husband and I have been training with Jesse for the last two months. We are both in our 60s and had very limited exercising habit . Since the quarantine began , it took a toll on our physical and mental health. With the advice of our daughter , we started personal training with Jess. Jess has been great in so many ways . But most of all she made it less intimidating for us because of her gentile approach. She is patient when guiding and explaining the benefits of every exercise we do. She also agreed to setup the exercise session outdoors in nearby park which is convenient for us. Thank you Jess for all the help !

It's simple really. If you want the best results, go to the best personal trainer. Anyone can can open a 'gym' in an unfinished building without air conditioning, but if you're looking for a specialized program, tailored to your individual goals and needs, this is your place. This is a private gym, where you're time is scheduled, guaranteeing personal, one on one attention. No need to wait for weights, ever. Vanessa busts my ass! She's very knowledgeable and makes sure I know what area of my body I'm working out. After just 10 visits I lost a couple of inches. This team has kept me motivated and I'm excited to be reaching my goals!! Highly recommended.

I love working with Kendall! -She's passionate about fitness, nutrition, and an overall healthy lifestyle. If you have food items that you feel you can't live without, she'll help you work them into your diet in the best way possible. -Kendall is always on time! Even on the days I happen to arrive early, she's there waiting for me. -She's great about scheduling our time together and does a check-in with her clients every Sunday to reconfirm the schedule for the week. -Safety is her #1 priority in teach her clients how to lift weights and get into shape. She's always asking for feedback about feel, comfort, pain levels, etc. Only once I had to tell her about pain I was experiencing in my knee, and she immediately modified my motion to alleviate the pain. -Kendall is an excellent motivator and really helps you get past your own mental blocks about your body and losing weight. -She's honest about necessary commitment vs. personal goals and explains her rates/pricing really well. -The gym where she hosts clients is really the most intimidating part of the experience. On any given day you'll see people training and practicing for body building competitions. If you don't mind learning alongside the pros, you'll be fine. -Everyone at that gym also works out with a personal trainer, so it's a very comfortable experience being around people working on the same goals that you have -I am still in my first month training with Kendall but am already seeing results in how my clothes are fitting me. I'm really excited to continue seeing changes over the next few months! I train 4x per week with Kendall and believe it's worth every penny.

I started with Dima because I was unable to take significant strides in body strength without niggles appearing over my back and legs that make working out uncomfortable. I tried self workouts, group classes, and a couple of personal trainers. Within the first 60 mins of working with Dima I realized he has a special gift of understanding each individuals human body. I don't believe he has a set framework that he applies to all his clients. Rather, he assessed my strengths and weaknesses, and built a plan specific to my needs (he makes me foam roll my IT bands between squats!!)... all while teaching me about my own body. In a short span of 18 classes, I feel significantly stronger and wayyy more flexible. Looking forward to my next class already. Worth every $ and more. I am very glad I chose Joe as my personal fitness trainer. With my demanding work schedule, sedentary lifestyle and vegetarian food habits, I needed someone who can provide a tailor made fitness regime at my doorstep -- and Joe is delivering just that. He adopts a practical approach towards weight loss, is very friendly and flexible with timings (sometimes even flexible with days). I was never a regular at gym before; but with Joe, I feel motivated to hit the road and demonstrate that incremental progress. He makes the workout interesting by alternating the workout locations between gyms, outdoors and hills, brings his own equipment and experiments different workout sequences based on what I can endure. My goal is to reduce 40-50 pounds by Dec2015. I've lost 7+ pounds in just about same number of sessions. Hopefully I'll reach my target with continued support and patience from Joe. To all those workaholics who are helplessly putting on that weight and praying for a magic to happen: go get Joe! (In-App & Virtual Only) (In-App & Virtual Only)
