Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

What do you need for kickboxing?

What you need to bring to kickboxing depends on where you are working out and what your goals are. For a gym or fitness club’s cardio-based group kickboxing class that does not use punching bags, you generally need only appropriate workout gear and enough water. For kickboxers who are training in a martial arts studio, working one-on-one with a trainer toward a specific goal or sparring with competitors, you will need your own boxing gloves (12- to 16-ounce gloves provide more protection for beginners) and hand wraps (to protect and support your hands under the gloves, as well as keep them dry). If your lessons are in a martial arts studio, you may not be permitted to wear shoes, so bring clean socks if you don’t like to go barefoot. If your training includes sparring, you may be required to wear a mouthguard and/or protective headgear. Whether you’re in a group fitness class or hardcore training session, bring a sweat towel for your comfort and the comfort of people around you.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

What is kickboxing?

Kickboxing is a type of martial art whose basic moves are widely practiced in personal and group fitness regimens. In combat kickboxing, two competitors fight using four points of contact — both hands and both feet — unlike traditional boxing, where competitors are allowed to use their hands. In competitive kickboxing, opponents must remain standing, and no fighting can occur on the mat or ground. Kickboxing has its roots in Muay Thai and other ancient martial arts. Some elemental moves from kickboxing include roundhouse kicks, back kicks, hooks, uppercuts and more.

Modern group fitness kickboxing is practiced in gyms and workout studios across the country. It draws its moves from combat kickboxing, but instead of fighting with an opponent, participants perform jabs, crosses, punches and kicks in instructor-led, choreographed routines set to music. Personal trainers also incorporate kickboxing moves into workout routines, spending time punching and kicking the bag. These strength-building moves, mixed with high-intensity intervals, boost heart rate and increase strength.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session. Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

  • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
  • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
  • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
  • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
  • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
  • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
  • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

Ging is hands down one of the best personal instructors I've ever trained with. I've only been going to her studio for a few weeks, but I feel stronger and more confident being in a gym space. When we are training she is 100% there and has always taken into account my injuries and personal conditions, suggesting modifications and things to look out for. She is super relatable, engaging, and creates a very non-intimidating environment to train in. I cannot recommend her enough!

Joe has been very patient with me, this being my first time using a personal trainer. He keeps me honest by monitoring my daily progress and encouraging me to make small changes for big results. I am more comfortable working with him than I thought I would be with a personal trainer. I'm looking forward to the results I will see working with him.

Training with Scott is a life changing experience. He is absolutely the best personal trainer I ever have. He is knowledgeable and responsible. I feel like I'm in good hands right after first session with him. I can be so focused on training cuz he has the processed planned for me. And when I have any question, I just text him, and he is soooo nice that he answer each one of them. I've been training with him for 3 weeks so far, I can feel my muscle growing and my body having more energy. I'm sure as long as I don't move too far, I'll keep training with him. I highly recommend him to anyone that want to switch to a more healthy life style and thinking of hiring a personal trainer to help achieve any fitness goal. I don't know about other trainers, but I do know this one is GREAT :).

I had a really good experience working with Dima.I trained with him for almost 9 months. He is friendly, punctual and know all the nuances of strength training. He used to explain my doubt again and again without getting irritated. I gained strength a lot and proper form in squats and deadlifts. I would suggest to keep measuring your progress strictly to make quicker progress. I didn't measure my progress consistently so I didn't gain the enough muscle Mass or the body that I was expecting after 9 months of personal training. But, overall experience was great.

Hands down the best trainer in bay area! My fiancé and I were looking to get into shape before our wedding and both of us had different fitness goals. Scott tuned our diet and workout according to our personal goals, which is not easy. From Day 1 he was amazing! He not only trains you physically, but also how to become strong mentally. I personally had not worked out for years and Scott's method of training was just great. He is very very very knowledgeable and knows exactly when to push hard and when to give some leeway. He provides you with all the personal attention you need. 4-5 weeks into training, our thought process for the workout changed completely from "just something we wanted to do before wedding" to overall health and fitness of the body. It was amazing to see our physical and mental transformation. Apart from that, Scott is very very personable. He would listen to your goals and concerns and motivates you always. We are so glad and feel so lucky to have found him! Cheers!

Stephen is very energetic and very passionate. After a discussion to explain what I (don't) know about health and nutrition, we were on our way! Some personal and business issues have interrupted the regularity of my training, July will be rough, but soon we'll be on a more regular schedule which I know will bring me closer to my goals.I'm excited!!

I started training with Justin 8 months ago with the soul aim of getting a perfect body. I weighed 190 lbs with a body fat of 26%. Justin delivered a wide range of professional personal training including: cardiovascular training, weight training, nutrition and diet, sports massage, physiotherapy and injury advice, mind strength and well-being. He comes up with unique and interesting exercises which actually work. Within the first 3 months I lost around 10% body fat and 10 lbs of weight. He takes charge of each and every progress you make, in order to give you better results. He also provided a diet regimen suitable for your body. So after 8 months of training, with a break of 2 months, I currently weigh 163 lbs with a body fat of 10%, which is an astonishing result. TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY, IT'S THE ONLY PLACE YOU'VE TO LIVE IN... If you looking to transform your body, or even thinking to stay fit with a good fitness program, I highly recommend Justin at AJB Fitness.

I have been training with Justin for about 5 months and I am very happy with the training I'm receiving. I started at 175 pounds/13.5% body fat, and currently am at 165/9.4%. My goals were to cut body fat and gain lean muscle but did not know anything about strength workouts or weight training. But, Justin understands my goals and provides me with tailor-made exercises that fit my level- they are not easy, because they shouldn't be, but each exercise challenges my limit and that makes me feel proud! He's been able to help me fully understand how to work out properly and willingly shares his expertise with you to make the sessions fun, challenging, and a learning experience. He is easy to relate to and has a good sense of humor which helps to motivate me. I strongly recommend Justin if you are looking for a personal trainer who can personalize your workout and give you the result you desire.

It's simple really. If you want the best results, go to the best personal trainer. Anyone can can open a 'gym' in an unfinished building without air conditioning, but if you're looking for a specialized program, tailored to your individual goals and needs, this is your place. This is a private gym, where you're time is scheduled, guaranteeing personal, one on one attention. No need to wait for weights, ever. Vanessa busts my ass! She's very knowledgeable and makes sure I know what area of my body I'm working out. After just 10 visits I lost a couple of inches. This team has kept me motivated and I'm excited to be reaching my goals!! Highly recommended.

I love working with Kendall! -She's passionate about fitness, nutrition, and an overall healthy lifestyle. If you have food items that you feel you can't live without, she'll help you work them into your diet in the best way possible. -Kendall is always on time! Even on the days I happen to arrive early, she's there waiting for me. -She's great about scheduling our time together and does a check-in with her clients every Sunday to reconfirm the schedule for the week. -Safety is her #1 priority in teach her clients how to lift weights and get into shape. She's always asking for feedback about feel, comfort, pain levels, etc. Only once I had to tell her about pain I was experiencing in my knee, and she immediately modified my motion to alleviate the pain. -Kendall is an excellent motivator and really helps you get past your own mental blocks about your body and losing weight. -She's honest about necessary commitment vs. personal goals and explains her rates/pricing really well. -The gym where she hosts clients is really the most intimidating part of the experience. On any given day you'll see people training and practicing for body building competitions. If you don't mind learning alongside the pros, you'll be fine. -Everyone at that gym also works out with a personal trainer, so it's a very comfortable experience being around people working on the same goals that you have -I am still in my first month training with Kendall but am already seeing results in how my clothes are fitting me. I'm really excited to continue seeing changes over the next few months! I train 4x per week with Kendall and believe it's worth every penny.

Justin is one of the most knowledgable personal trainers I have had the pleasure of getting to know and learn from. As a professional in the health field it was important to me to work with someone who understands the physiology of the body and could accommodate to my individual needs and goals. Justin is highly relatable and took the time to listen to and get to know what was important for me to achieve. Unlike the work of many other trainers I've seen, Justin had my best interests in mind at all times and was excellent at tailoring a client-specific program for diet and exercise that is unique, especially for me as a vegetarian. I have been active as an avid runner and did not need to make a drastic change, but I wanted a new challenge for myself to get stronger with strength training and he provided that. I felt myself getting stronger after just several weeks of working with Justin and that carried over into my work with my patients. At every session he was encouraging, motivating, varied the type of exercise, and safely forced me to push myself to a point I didn't think I could. He was accommodating to any minor injuries I had and adjusted the exercise regimens around them. Justin will provide the tools necessary to get to your goals, which you will, as long as you put in 100% effort on your end. It's hard work and he's with you along every step of the change. I highly recommend him to anyone at any point in their fitness journey! Had I not started training for another race I would have continued to work with Justin. I continue to implement the information learned from Justin in my daily life as I see fit and am extremely thankful to have had the pleasure to have him as my trainer.

I started with Dima because I was unable to take significant strides in body strength without niggles appearing over my back and legs that make working out uncomfortable. I tried self workouts, group classes, and a couple of personal trainers. Within the first 60 mins of working with Dima I realized he has a special gift of understanding each individuals human body. I don't believe he has a set framework that he applies to all his clients. Rather, he assessed my strengths and weaknesses, and built a plan specific to my needs (he makes me foam roll my IT bands between squats!!)... all while teaching me about my own body. In a short span of 18 classes, I feel significantly stronger and wayyy more flexible. Looking forward to my next class already. Worth every $ and more. I am very glad I chose Joe as my personal fitness trainer. With my demanding work schedule, sedentary lifestyle and vegetarian food habits, I needed someone who can provide a tailor made fitness regime at my doorstep -- and Joe is delivering just that. He adopts a practical approach towards weight loss, is very friendly and flexible with timings (sometimes even flexible with days). I was never a regular at gym before; but with Joe, I feel motivated to hit the road and demonstrate that incremental progress. He makes the workout interesting by alternating the workout locations between gyms, outdoors and hills, brings his own equipment and experiments different workout sequences based on what I can endure. My goal is to reduce 40-50 pounds by Dec2015. I've lost 7+ pounds in just about same number of sessions. Hopefully I'll reach my target with continued support and patience from Joe. To all those workaholics who are helplessly putting on that weight and praying for a magic to happen: go get Joe!
