Kevin is one of the best plumbers/handyman in Silicon Valley. He is a true professional who is honest and is willing to help you out whether you choose to avail his service or not. He did an excellent job fixing the clog in my bathroom sink and he also helped me out with other handyman chores. Not only was the job well done in addition to giving me tips on how to fix things so that I can fix such issues in future but he also charged me for less time than he actually spent. Overall, I'm very happy with Kevin's work and will definitely recommend him to my friends & colleagues as well as rely on him for future needs.

Jose did excellent work, and for by far the best price! I got two other quotes to replace my garbage disposal + p trap pipes, and Jose's price was half that of the others. He's an honest guy - unlike the other plumbers, he didn't overcharge me for the parts (he even showed me the original receipt). On top of all of that, he was responsive to my messages, showed up right on time and was very professional. He answered all of my questions, and even taught me how to reset/repair the garbage disposal for the future. No doubt I'll be using him for all of my future plumbing needs.

Hi was friendly, helpful, fast and showed up exactly on time. Contrary to many plumbers I've dealt with, he didn't try to push me into spending lots of money. Instead, he recommended solutions that saved me money, even if that meant less profit for him.

Vyron showed up when promised and picked up all of the scrap metal I had after removing a flue and fireplace. He left the area clean and spotless. Vyron was polite, quick, and very reasonable. I would definitely hire him again for my next job. Many thanks.

I had a clogged shower drain and Max sent two of his plumbers (Chris and Corey) the next business day to fix it. They were professional and courteous. Unfortunately, the issue was more severe than expected, but Chris found a workaround that will hopefully be less expensive. Some follow up work still needs to be done, but I'm hopeful that it won't be too involved.

Routine water heater swap - yeah right. What started out as thinking our water heater was broken, turned out to be a long overdue clogged sewer lateral. Worst case scenario. While I'm not that happy about the sewage overflow situation which could have been better mitigated (and we still need to beach the hell out of that room), the solutions and options offered by Ali were professional and spoke of his experience. To unclog the piping, snaking was attempted but failed, hydrojetting was attempted but failed (with a mess of sewage). Finally we got a camera down there to find a wall of something about 50 feet down from the mechanical room to a spot under the sidewalk. Digging 4 feet down, to find actually a pretty good condition clay lateral. Ali's man Valentino (a skilled gentleman), cut the clay and replaced it with a riser in order to install a cleanout for future maintenance. Once done, they hydrojetted for another hour to clear 7-8 months worth of waste. The camera was once again sent through to find that a portion of the clay lateral had shifted and created uneven surfaces including some penetration of tree roots. While most plumbers would probably recommending an immediate replacement, Ali recommended that since it wasn't fully collapsed, we should simply clear out the lateral as routine maintenance rather than spend all the money to replace the pipe. I appreciate his direct communication, no sales pitch, and brief coaching through the process. While I do have 10 yrs of construction experience, and his price was not the cheapest, he certainly delivered on time and without any sense of price gouging.

Out of the three estimates i received this afternoon Greg was great. He was the only one of the plumbers to go into my attic to look for the leak and he was the only one who had me turn the water on. He identified the problem right away and had the part in his truck and he replaced it in less than 30 minutes. Big thanks to Greg at Rooter-tec! He was professional and I will definitely call him with my next plumbing issue.

Sometimes you get lucky. We did when Stephen responded to our weekend post for a plumber on thumbtack. We had lost a pvc pipe connected to our roof's drain. The weather forecast was for rain the following day. As other reviews note, Stephen was on time and quickly addressed our needs. He had the situation fixed in under two hours with highly competent workmanship. It did rain the next day and the roof drain was working just. fine. Thanks Stephen!

Communication was great- they responded to our request very quickly and were able to come fast. However, our drain problem was in a multi-unit condo, and possibly beyond the scope of their equipment/capabilities. They used a 20 ft snake that ultimately got stuck in our system. We had to escalate to our building management, who brought out plumbers used to commercial properties and eventually resolved over a couple weeks. Not the plumber's fault, as they were not able to know the extend of our drain issues. 5 stars for communication and effort, 3 for incomplete resolution - so 4 star average.

Clay was able to come same day to fix a leaking pipe in our garage that a previous plumber had incorrectly installed. After a cheaper fix didn't work he was able to come out the next day at no additional cost beyond the materials and additional time he tried to save the first day and fix the leaking pipe 100% Would highly recommend

TL;DR: Valentino was excellent, and I'd hire him again in a heartbeat. I had some hesitations about hiring a plumber, after all the stories I've heard about plumbers charging exorbitant prices. For my disconnected kitchen sink pipe, a couple plumbers quoted me very high prices. When I came to Valentino, he charged me a fair price that was much less than the other two quotes. And moreover, he came on time and got the job (which actually wasn't so simple) done well. Super nice, super professional, and super honest. Hands down, I'd hire him again, and would recommend him to my friends.

I had a Kitchen drain that was clogged. David responded, we agreed on a reasonable offer and he was out the next day to complete the job. He was kind, professional and on-time (even a couple of minutes early). He put down a plastic tarp around the work area and was very clean and cleaned up after himself. I was VERY pleased with his responsiveness and work overall, I would def call him for any future repairs. He hit every mark on what one expects from a service professional and I think you'd make a good choice going with him. I have had to hire a plumber at a previous residence and it cost twice as much for a similar job. Glad I found him!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
