We hired The Crazy Caterer for a one time private chef experience for a 70th birthday party and they were amazing!! Tentative, responsive, and reliable. Everyone at the party was impressed and loved the personal touch and food. Great time with such short notice and the food was tasty. We are looking forward to working with Kim and Stephen again!!!

Food was tasty. Ordered the Taco bar. Wish there would have been a warmer for the tortillas. Tortillas were cold by the time we started eating.

Wonderful group of caterers. Incredibley kind and accommodating. Packed and stored all the delicious left overs, cleaned up the kitchen and brought a great bartender as well. The only criticism is that the salads were over dressed and thus soggy, but still had great flavor. I would definitely hire them again.

We had a wonderful experience with Dustin for a quaint dinner on our annual “sisters” weekend. He created the perfect menu based on a few requests I made to make everyone happy! All the courses were delicious. The scallops were heavenly and prepared just right. All the flavors combined so well and the ingredients so fresh. We enjoyed some wine while we watched Dustin prepare the gourmet meal and he was so gracious to share both some facts about himself and the food he was artfully creating. His lovely wife assisted and was just as delightful. Just as mouthwatering as the meal, the dessert was over the top with fresh Palisade Peaches. The kitchen was spotless when he left and we captured the moment with a picture for the scrapbook. If you are looking for a special night with every detail attended to- look no farther than Dustin at Underground Fine Dining. I am already looking for another event to invite Dustin back!

I hired Mama Lisa's for my own birthday party last July as I did not want to have to worry about a thing when hosting. Had a wonderful experience! The food was excellent & the entire process was so streamlined with no muss no fuss. The bacon wrapped dates are delicious! My guests kept asking who catered the event. :) Also the jicama salad for the street tacos is a must have!!

We hired Nancy and team for a holiday dinner for 18 people this season and the team was great. Nancy was great to work with in planning the evening and the team of 3 that came to help cook and serve were very professional and helped the evening flow perfectly. I would highly recommend Sparrow Kitchen for catering for a dinner party, food was great, Nancy was very responsive and helped make our event very elegant.

I enjoyed working with this catering company! The food was pretty good and the catering delivery had the challenge of getting the food out & presentable very quietly, which went well. I had to take a star off because the chicken was undercooked on the two meals set aside for our folks with dietary restrictions and delivery on the second day was about 20 minutes late. Overall, the experience was good and I will keep them in the list of caterers for future events.

We love working with the team from Luke's! They have catered our company events many times and everyone looks forward to the steak sandwiches & salmon each year! I have been in charge of planning our events for the last few years and have worked with Bob and his team the last two summers - they are professional and extremely helpful, even providing extra plates & plastic cutlery for the potluck portion of our event after we ran out! Our company picnic took place outside and, as is common during summer afternoons, we got caught in a thunderstorm but the staff from Luke's took everything in stride, relocating the food service to a more sheltered area and keeping all the guests happy and well-fed. Working with such a well-prepared and experienced team made what could have been a really stressful situation for an event planner very easy to handle and Luke's really helped make our event a success!

We had a caterer cancel at the last minute for our wedding (eek!). Carrie was willing to work within our tight budget and she communicated with us regularly and promptly to get everything in place in a very short amount of time. The food was great, the taco meat in particular. Thanks k you so much for your last minute help feeding our guests!

Xim catering did a charcuterie spread for our wedding cocktail hour. Because they had a large event the same weekend, they were able to lump our event in under the large orders that got him discount pricing. This was an incredible value for us, and he came and set everything up with so much care! It was beautiful, delicious, and a great price. Plus the owner is kind, helpful, and easy to work with. Definitely recommend!

Chef Rick was terrific! He was the perfect mix of asking me what I'd like and making suggestions based on his experience and specialties. He kept in touch with me before the event so I was comfortable that we were on the same page. He was attentive during the event, yet very much in the background. My friends were really impressed with the taco bar! I'd recommend Chef Rick to anyone!

We're a pretty laid back firm. J Street took their time and laid out the food, which was perfect, as the party progressed. No hurry, so everyone ate what they wanted, when they wanted. It was perfect. And everyone enjoyed ordering their personal dinner from the food truck. It was the perfect way to do a private catering event, with food that we couldn't get anywhere else.

I cannot say enough good things about this company! They made the food fresh that morning and brought the taco bar up to my floor where I had 150 hungry team members waiting. They made sure that all of the sides were refilled and that everyone was happy. I have never had so many compliments from the team about a meal that we had brought in. Thank you so much ladies! We will be talking to you in the future for our next event.

They are extremely professional and reliable. I have also ordered food that I picked up and took home for other family events. The food is always so delicious! I highly recommend them! Troy and crew did an excellent job with the party I had him cater! All of the food offerings were bright, fresh, and tasty. The staff was courteous, clean, and prepared. The presentations were wonderful and artistic...I would happily, and confidently, rehire them to do another catering event for me. Very professional, and attentive to special needs and details. Bravo!

The entire team at A Spice of Life was amazing. From the menu planning to the event staff - it made our party planning seemless and the evening itself better than I could’ve imagined. Jen, Jordan and John were professional and their service was perfect - they literally took care of everything so we could just enjoy our party. Our guests couldn’t stop raving about how good the food was (not only in taste but in the beautiful presentation) and John’s excellent drinks from the bar. I would highly recommend A Spice of Life for your next event - I know we will be using them again for ours!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
