Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What is the easiest backsplash to install?

Peel-and-stick tiles are the easiest backsplash to install, as they don’t require any materials or preparation work besides measuring.

Ceramic tile, a popular choice for many homeowners, is a fairly simple installation choice for backsplash, and it comes in almost any color and pattern.

Glass tile is a bit more difficult to install than ceramic, while stone or marble tile tends to be the most expensive.

Contact the best tiling contractors near you to determine the best type of backsplash to install in your home.

Tile work was poor. Tiles are uneven. Grout is inconsistently filled. Large gaps between tile and wall filled with mismatched grout color. Toilet leaked during install and continue to leak after.

Christian did a great job, was friendly and was very affordable! We had tiles coming up on our shower seat so we acquired the quartz seat to replace the tiles and Christian installed it in a few hours time. I would recommend Avila Tile for sure.

Alex and team were professional and always on or before time. My kitchen got a much needed facelift with the new tiles. Only con I can think of is that he did not finish laying all the tiles the second day but more then made up for it the next day. I would recommend Alex for any floor tile projects

Chris was exceptional. Her attention to both detail and care to listen to what we ultimately wanted was very refreshing. She was prompt in her response to my communications, and completed the job to perfection. We are very pleased and would hire Lotus Tile again for any future tile project.

Meza Tile was professional, affordable and provided great quality for our project. We had old brown tile squares around our fireplace and they did an awesome job with the herringbone pattern my wife wanted. We need our backsplash done so will definitely give them a call.

Tony was prompt and professional and did a backsplash for us. Overall it looks nice but looking closing I was disappointed. He did a great job on the ceramic tile portion of it but I wasn't very happy with a lot of the glass we had installed as an inset. It's crucial to use a wet saw on this type of tile or it can easily break. We have several broken pieces on our wall, bubbles in the grout and grout that was set too far back so I had to re-do the grout. Nothing I can do about the tile. I pointed this out before he left and it appeared fixed but I found more broken tile later as even some waves in one area. He did say he would come back if I found anything came up but at that point it's just uncomfortable.

Meza Tile was amazing to work with! We had them come redo all the tile in our house: floors, kitchen, bathroom, fireplace and laundry room and they did fantastic work. We couldn't be happier. Everything looks great and they were meticulous about making sure everything was done right and that we were happy with the result. I can't recommend them highly enough.

Beautiful work done by the Avila Tile team! Cristian was very easy to work with and provided a fair price for our job. The project consisted of installing floor and wall tile in our new basement bathroom. After starting the project some additional work was required to remedy the shower floor and walls, the price was fair to complete the work. We appreciate the time and precision the team spent to install the tile. It was obvious that Cristian wanted to get it right and takes pride in his work. Thank you for bringing my vision to life! The team was also very nice and friendly to my dogs. I would highly recommend the team. Thanks again!

WOW!! is all I can say. I am so impressed with with quality and time Meza tile took on my kids bathroom that I hired them again to do our master bathroom. It took less than 3 days to complete each bathroom. Jorge with Meza tile went above and beyond to bring my vision to life and was always available to answer my calls and texts.

I loved everything about working with Paulo at Foolproof Tile. He was professional, polite, responsive, ON TIME, meticulous, inexpensive, and did beautiful work. He went above and beyond when I changed the tile on him to a much more difficult arabesque tile and black grout to work with. He finished my kitchen and fireplace in two days, staying very late on one day (with my permission) instead of returning another day. It all looks so beautiful!!! I will recommend him to everyone, and I will definitely be hiring him again for my bathroom work. I would add photos, but they are loading sideways, so I will let Paulo add them.

Wellness Walk-In Tubs did an amazing job on our bathroom floor! We used smaller tile and chose a herringbone pattern, it definitely wasn't an easy install but Sean made it look easy. Pricing was extremely reasonable, they had the lowest quote out of the five I received. Office staff and crew were very professional and polite through the entire process. I highly recommend choosing Wellness Walk-In Tubs for any tiling or bathroom project you have. I will be having them back out to install the toilet, vanity/sink, and baseboards in a few weeks once I have picked everything picked out. I have nothing but positive things to say about Wellness Walk-In Tubs and will use them for all future tiling and bathroom projects!!!

Met Alex using Thumbtack. He was on time to go over project and give me some insights I had not thought of. I hired him to install wall tiles in my salon, he did fantastic work at a very fair price. He was conscious of ensuring to cover the flooring and items that may be affected by work. He did such a great job I had him back today to install wood mosaic in the entry and will have him out to tile bathrooms on another project I have. Did not have photos handy, but very impressed with his work ethic and top notch quality If you need pretty much anything done, Alex and his team are awesome. I look forward to many future project using A’s Tile Brian S.

American Quality Production removed and replaced an existing tile in the master bedroom shower and vanity. I would like to put the pros and cons of working with them. Pros- 1-Stephen is very responsive, you can text him anytime and you will receive a text or call back from him right away 2-Stephen finished the work including removing what has been done by his team members and retile even after I paid him over 90% of the agreed amount. He is trustworthy when it comes to money. 3- Stephen redid the work with no attitude and was happy to fix what was ruined Cons - 1- I was told the work will take 2-4 days, but it took a week and a half. 2- When removing the sink the correct precaution wasn't taken and the water leaked for almost two days until it becomes an emergency when it started leaking down to the main level office 3-The vanity tile was poorly tiled that Stephen had to remove and retile.Which as a result ruined the drywall. 4-There is grout everywhere , but still missing from where it should be (I will put the pictures below). There is grout on the blinds , grout all over the tile which made it harder to clean and gave the tile a very ashy color than what it should be. 5-Soap holder in the shower was over caulked with too much grout and caulk on top , It looks really ugly. 6-There is missing grout from the shower and the vanity tiles that I have informed Stephen over two weeks ago, that I am waiting to have it fixed. 7- Not enough caulk was applied to the sink area that I have noticed when water started leaking from the vanity to the cabinet under it.

He clearly is very junior in Tile installation. Although we did not have the most basic tile installation for a backsplash, he was found to be very limited in the quality and quite frankly had to check frequently to advise and assist. We also, based on the efforts, have to take on additional costs to replace and repair wood trim-work at the base of our cabinets that was cut poorly, mis-cut and cut to short. Needless to say, I would not recommend him for an existing workplace where he says he can do it but the results just simply are not there.
