Kim and her staff could not have been more helpful! Short notice and too much stuff on my plate to communicate well, but she pulled it off, with some great vegan and gluten free items too! Thank you! Well done

Tom is a talented, enthusiastic chef with a wide variety of ethnic and regional specialties. Tom has cooked in our home on a number of occasions, always to our complete satisfaction. We love his smoked meats and Gai chicken, but our hands-down favorite is his Mexican menu -- best guacamole we've ever eaten. He always chooses fresh, high quality ingredients and will cater to any of our dietary requests, be they paleo, organic, vegan, gluten-free -- he can do it. He does a terrific job with large groups. (Would you believe he catered a women's rugby team dinner in our home? It's true.) Aside from his skills as a chef, Tom is a fun, interesting person to know. Five stars!

I bought the dining experience for my daughter and son in law for Christmas. Here is what they said "Dustin did a great job working around my food allergies. Definitely fancy restaurant quality. He and his assistant were very amicable and easy to talk to while they were here."

Rob cooked an amazing and special Father's Day dinner for 6 people at my house. He came up with an elegant menu (i just send that we wanted tilapia to be the main course) and he also was very accommodating in modifying the menu because we had one very picky eater and another who was gluten free. We would definitely work with Rob again - everyone keeps talking about how great the experience was. The food was delicious and the presentation was also terrific. Rob is also very personable and professional.

My wife and I celebrated co-retirement and had a party for 75 guests at an outdoor venue with a small inside dining room and kitchen in Golden. I contacted Pam after reading the rave reviews on Thumbtack. She was prompt with a response, gave a very fair price and supplied a plethora of side dish suggestions for our BBQ theme. Pam and Mary arrived early, helped set-up other areas of our venue, and then brought appetizers made by my wife's friend to the guests while they were visiting outside. Pam brought extra supplies for us and provided plastic cups for the wine that we brought. The food was exceptional and they also made some of the sides gluten free that I requested at the last minute. Our guests loved the food. There were no complaints, only compliments. Pam and Mary were polite, engaging, professional and made sure they were available to help us and our guests throughout the entire night. After our guests had eaten, they made sure there was food left for the band. They stayed late to help clean our entire location, inside and out, even taking out the trash. The kitchen area was cleaner when they left, than when we arrived. Lastly, they kept a generous portion of all of their food for my wife and I to take home with us, even though most of it was completely consumed by our guests!! Pam and Mary provided a utopian experience for our party. You will not go wrong by hiring them. Feel free to contact me personally at jepm718@aol.com with any questions.

Leabeth's kitchen provides quality food at very resonable prices. One of the best dishes I ever had was her stuffed roast pork. My family absolutely live this dish. I really appreciate her ability to deliver food promptly. Leabeth's kitchen was able to handle a special request meal due to gluten allergies. I would highly recommend Leabeth's kitchen to everyone.

Knife and Pepper catered my wedding (150 guests, outdoor venue, street tacos and sopapilla bar), and I could not have been happier. The food was FANTASTIC, the presentation lovely, and the wait staff was professional and kind. I didn't have to lift a finger as everything was just taken care of-- including special options for my vegetarian and gluten free guests and family members! I, too, was pampered, and my new husband and I got to simply sit back and simply enjoy our special day. THANK YOU Knife and Pepper for creating such wonderful memories. P.S. my in-laws are still raving about the carne asada, and I seriously want to steal your shrimp ceviche recipe! Delish!

Shane was great to work with and was very responsive when I had questions. He even altered his sides to be veggie friendly, provided gluten free pies for dessert and even made bbq tofu for our non-meat eaters. My teammates (150+) ate every bit of food put out for them at our employee picnic/season wrap party and raved that it was delicious. I would hire BBQ Kings again in a heart beat and recommend them to anyone looking for great BBQ variety!

Trisha's services are amazing! She can cook anything and make it really tasty. She's been cooking for us on a weekly basis for over 3 years. My 3- year old also loves her. Her strength lies in her ability to cater to all the various food needs & requests that may exist within a family. My husband & I both have unique tastes when it comes to food. I eat spicy food and he likes your basic American cuisine. Trisha has been able to cater to both our needs for the last 3 years. She has also cooked healthy, tasty gluten-free meals for us when we requested it Try her out, She won't disappoint.

My wife and I hired Tussaint to cater our wedding at The Loft Music Venue on October 16, 2016. Long story short, we chose the right caterer. After I approached Tussaint to cater the wedding, he came up with a menu that was fantastic AND fit my dietary restrictions (gluten and dairy free.). If he can do this with my diet, I'm sure he can do wonders with other situations too. He ended up cooking prime rib beef with an au jus, chicken in a herbed tomato sauce, roasted potatoes, salad, and also fruit kabobs and pinwheel wraps for a social hour. My wife's Grandpa has decided that it was the best prime rib he's ever had, and several guests (including the manager of a popular local restaurant) said that they were blown away by the roasted potatoes. All in all, the quality of the food, combined with the professional presentation made it a success. If you have the chance to hire Tussaint, I would encourage you to do so, especially now. Because once his reputation grows in the Springs, I imagine he will be pretty booked up with satisfied customers

EAT catered our wedding in October 2014. It was challenging circumstances, as all cooking equipment had to be rented, there was no existing kitchen at our venue. We served salad, lamb, grilled veggies & wild rice, as well as tasty hors d'oeuvres to 78 guests with no problems whatsoever. EAT did an AMAZING job. 1.5 yrs. later, people still comment on how good the food was!!! To create a memorable event, hire EAT!!!! I would hire them again in a heartbeat!! Also, Heather and her staff are kind, lovely folk who are easy to work with and a delight to have at one's event.

Very highly recommend! We had Big D's Smok-N-BBQ cater my father-in-law's retirement party of about 150 people. The food without a doubt was the hit of the party. The spread was awesome! We had a little bit of everything, ribs, BBQ chicken, pulled pork, brisket, mac n cheese, green beans... Seriously the works, and it was all amazing. The food was not only delicious, but the catering was very reasonably priced, really a great value. Derrick is fantastic to work with and made the whole process extremely easy and stress-free. He treats his customers like family. He was very responsive whenever we needed to get in touch, he showed up right on time, and literally set everything up for the party. We love Big D's!

Spencer has catered 2 parties in our home. One a smaller meal for 12, and then a party for 50. He is super easy to work with, had great ideas for menu planning and dishes and the food was fabulous. Plus we had some gluten and dairy restrictions and he was able to easily accommodate that. We got so many compliments. We consider him now our default caterer and will call him for any future events.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
