Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost to hire an interior painter ranges between $200-$2,700. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls.

Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to get the outside of your house painted?

You can expect to pay around $2,535 to get the outside of your house painted, though this cost will increase with larger house sizes (and decrease with smaller ones). The average hourly rate for exterior painters is $45 and ranges from $25-$75.

Wood, brick, stucco, vinyl, aluminum and stone each have their own set of demands. Contact exterior painters near you to get a detailed cost estimate for your house.

How much should interior painting cost per square foot?

You can expect a 12x12-foot average room with 8-foot ceilings to cost $100 to paint, while a 16x16-foot room with 9-foot ceilings could cost around $175.

To calculate the cost of interior painting per square foot, measure the square footage of wall space and ceiling space of your room. From this, you can estimate the number of gallons of paint needed to cover the wall space and compare it to these figures. You can also ask interior painters near you to provide an estimate before you hire them.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $917 (for one room) to $4,893 (for eight rooms). The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted.

Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards.

In one area, pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much do interior painters charge per hour?

You can expect to pay $50 per hour for interior painting. This price will change depending on a number of factors and may range between $30 and $160 per hour. Some factors include the height of the rooms, the complexity of the painting and more.

For an accurate cost estimate, request quotes from local painters and contractors.

What should I look for when choosing a painter?

When choosing a painter, pay attention to online reviews and ratings. Reviews with pictures are especially valuable, as these showcase the painter’s work. It’s also important to check whether your state requires licenses for painters — if it’s required, your contractor should be able to present their license.

Finally, compare estimates and quotes from multiple painters near you. Take into consideration what each one guarantees with the job, including factors like higher-quality paint, extensive preparation and a good warranty.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

If you're ready to repaint the walls in your home, get free estimates from the best painters near you.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

How long does it take to paint a room?

The length of time it takes to paint a room varies, depending on a couple of factors. For example, the size of the job makes a difference. With a small bedroom, or with only a wall or two that have to be painted, the job can be done in half a day. Larger jobs take longer.

Also, if there are several different colors being used, the job may take longer, as one may have to dry before the other is applied. A 12-by-12 room with one color may take a morning. With multiple colors, the job may stretch into the afternoon.

Before you hire an interior painter near you, ask them how long it will take to paint the room(s) in your home.

You were very professional, offered good advise on ways we can save cost on material with your discounted rate. You were fair in pricing and the quality of work was excellent. Pros: Higher level Home & Remodeling does excellent work. I like that they pressure washed the house and primed it prior to painting, it gave a overall pristine, clean appearance. Claude even was nice enough to hang shadow flower boxes for me. Our home has great curb appeal now, thanks to Higher-level!! Also they painted our exterior for a good price! Cons: has many projects and seemingly fewer workers, which takes longer for project; communication waned, once paid; also should improve clean up after project—paint found throughout yard.

They did an amazing job. Very quick to respond to all messages and showed up on time every day. Price was lower than everyone else, and well worth the money. They did a great job on the kitchen cabinets, they taped off every single thing and sprayed it to perfection. All walls we're trimmed properly and painted very clean. During the walk around they fix all mistakes found on the spot. Would highly recommend to anybody that needs cabinets or walls painted. Thank you

Pristine Green worked tirelessly to get the job done right, as quickly as possible. We had just bought the house and they were able to come in the same day, make a plan to do the job and for just a few days paint just about everything in the house and clean our carpets. They were on time, and finished on time as promised. We plan on using them for other painting projects in the future. I wouldn’t be able to recommend anyone else that would come close to their overall performance and cost.

I want to start by saying I really, really like these women as people. They are knowledgeable, kind and work hard and I respect that. But, overall my experience was bad and I do not recommend. First of all, there was paint left all over my floors… I mean all over. If you have carpet do not hire this company because your carpet will be ruined. It’s ridiculous how much I paid for them to leave me with the HOURS of clean up I had to do to get my house back in order. And, I found at least two holes they made. One they didn’t bother to cover up and the other they put tape over and painted the tape. They did not inform me, they did not fess up… I found the holes. No, I didn’t confront them. Honestly I’m too upset over it and I wanted them to finish the job, but I’m being honest when I tell you those holes and bad “fix” were not there when they started. Not to mention they ruined an expensive winter coat with the paint. I took off work to be home and help out. We talked multiple times about how I was there to help and specifically move anything that was in the way. Most of the time they said no, everything was fine, and then after they left I found paint on antique wood furniture and sheets (which mind you should have been covered during painting so how in the world did paint get on them?) and on my nice coat. They were also late every day. 1 out of 4 days they communicated they were in traffic, but on the very first day they said on the way, only to show up over 3 hours later - that didn’t make sense at all. The job took longer than they thought, mostly because they came late every day and didn’t work full days, so on the fourth day they rushed through the last room and the quality between that room and the others is noticeable - very disappointing. I won’t even get into how not once, but twice they said they were “done” and I had to check and point out what was NOT done that they tried to skip out on. Listen, my house was a big job. They did everything! The walls, ceilings, trim, baseboards and doors…. and overall I’m happy with the way my house looks now. But I’m really upset over the holes, my floors and messed up furniture and ruined coat. Unfortunately I would not hire them again and would not recommend to my friends or family.

Nestor is an awesome person. He took great time with me deciding what color and accent possibilities I could use. Even though our painting job is on hold at the moment I would definitely use Nestor and his company to do the job. People should all be as upstanding as Nestor. Thanks for taking the time with me. :)

Nice guy but did a HORRIBLE job. (Seemed nice, nice guys don't rip people off like this) I had him remove the wallpaper and refinish my master bathroom walls with texture/apply knockdown and then paint. He made an absolute disaster out of it. I had to pay another company to come in and completely redo everything he had done. His terrible job cost me more than had I went with someone else more expensive AND it set me back on time. He kept saying he does EVERYTHING- he left the place in an absolute mess, knockdown was all over the mirrors, light fixtures, trim, shower, tub, floors, all throughout my house where he walked, on my wood floors & capret, on random walls that were very far from the work site. I honestly don't know how he got it all over as he did. I had to REPLACE trim that he messed up so bad when removing the wall paper. In some areas he didn't remove all of the wallpaper and just textured over it which caused another nasty looking mess. There were random "gauges" and spots of very heavy texture and others with none throughout the entire bathroom and in so many areas the drywall, green board and steel/aluminum corner joints were not even covered by the texture or the paint. He left everything in this condition and considered the job complete and was surprised when I told him he had to repair this. He said he would but after finding more and more damage he had caused AND realizing that he thought this job was acceptable as he left it, we were afraid to allow him back in our home. Upon further investigation I found that he has not been in business as long as he says and he basically just set up an LLC and will do ANY type of job you offer him and claim he is an expert and can do it all. He also has many bad reviews. Do your research! He even did a horrible job painting. He got paint on the trim and ceilings causing me to have to repaint EVERYTHING when all that should have needed painting were the walls. I am attaching pictures Keep in mind this was a COMPLETED job according to him. I had SEVERAL more items he was supposed to do but I would not allow him to do ANYTHING at my home. Anyone that would think this type of job is acceptable on ANY Level has no pride in their workmanship and certainly does not know what they are doing. He should not be permitted to do this type of work as he is certainly not qualified.

My husband and I closed on our home on a Monday and wanted to get the entire interior of our home painted by move-in day Friday. Rob and his crew worked with us to accommodate our schedule. Before hiring Original Florida Painting I received quotes from several other companies, while Rob’s wasn’t the cheapest of the quotes (although still very fairly priced), after speaking with him he was BY FAR the most honest and customer-focused owner that I had spoken too. When the crew was finished Rob came to the house himself to make sure everything was done perfectly and had his crew do some final touch-ups that he noticed were needed. He told us if we noticed anything needing fixing, even if it’s 6 months down the road, to give him a call and he would fix it; I truly believe he would. I also saw on other reviews that he is a veteran. It’s always a pleasure to support a veteran-owned business when we can! He is a down-to-earth guy who truly wants to make his customers happy!
