Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth getting a personal trainer?

If you have fitness goals that you’re having trouble accomplishing on your own, hiring a personal trainer can be worth the money. People rarely regret getting in shape — even if it costs money. Personal trainers create accountability, as you’ll have to confess to them if you don’t stick to your training schedule. They’re trained to push you just hard enough, and they take your body type and goals into account when creating a fitness plan.

How often should you see a personal trainer?

How often you should see your personal trainer depends both on your budget and your fitness level. If you’re new to the exercise routine, maybe start with one to three visits per week to establish a good routine and understanding. Talk to personal trainers near you to figure out the perfect cadence for your personal training sessions.

How much does a personal trainer cost near me?

Expect to pay between $35 and $90 per hour for a personal trainer near you. The length of the session, as well as the number of sessions you book in advance, will have an impact on the price. You can often get lower prices per session by booking more of them. Group training also tends to be less expensive than one-on-one training, as is going to the gym instead of having the trainer come to meet you. Trainer certification is also a factor — trainers with more certification are likely to charge more.

It's important to do your research and get cost estimates from several personal trainers near you before you hire anyone.

How can I find a trainer?

Search for personal trainers near you online, and identify the ones with the highest ratings. Read their customer testimonials, and look at customers’ before-and-after photos (if available). It’s also important to find out whether the trainers sought professional training and certification, if they can adhere to your schedule and if they can train you at a location that works for both of you.

Finally, contact several trainers for cost estimates. This way, you can hire a trainer who not only provides great services but also fits within your budget.

What exactly does a personal trainer do?

A personal trainer is tasked with working with a client to achieve fitness goals. Personal trainers may take clients in a small group or do one-on-one training. Their focus is on fitness goals — muscular capacity, working on cardiovascular endurance, improving flexibility, and even recommending diet changes and at-home exercises. Personal trainers may work with clients in the gym or at their homes, depending on their preference.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session.

Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

Decision to use Mike as a personal trainer has paid great dividends. Physical I am at a place I've never been because of the work we put in. Mike is not only concerned with gym time with him, he also concerned with your individual personal gym time, diet, emotional health & sleep habits. His goal is to train you so that you could train yourself & become independent of him.

Mary takes the time to make sure that what you're doing is done safely and correctly. I never realised how many exercises I was doing wrong and now I feel like I'm getting the most out of my workouts. She motivates me to keep going when I feel like I'm at my limit. I've never felt more energized on a day to day since starting training with her. I was extremely impressed by her history as a personal trainer and fitness enthusiast and fully strive to be like her. She puts a large amount of attention on my needs and concerns and has been working with me to achieve my goals and to help create healthy habits for future use. She was the first personal trainer I've had and I'm so glad that I hired her. 20/10 would recommend!

When I submitted a request through Thumbtack for a personal trainer, I specified that I had a medical condition that required a trainer with knowledge and experience with my diagnosis, Ankylosing Spondylitis. Quite honestly, several of the responses I received were insane. I'm astounded that some of these trainers actually have clients when their grammar and intellect leaves me in doubt and suddenly they were all qualified medical professionals and when reading their profiles it was clear they were anything but. Then, I received a response from Craig Marks. He provided me with his background and credentials and 5 legitimate references of former clients he's trained who also had AK. His training, knowledge, experience and physical therapy background sets him apart from any other trainer in South Florida. I chose Craig and am thrilled I did. I'm off to a great, safe start and eager to share my results with the world.

I needed to get back in the gym but i wanted some help and guidance after not really getting into online training like many others. I am grateful I met Diana. The 13th Fitness Gym is incredible, super clean and they make sure we are as safe as possible. So worth the trip to go there. I always feel better after having a session with her. Great personal trainer and amazing gym and staff. #1PersonalTrainer in my book.

I've worked with many personal trainers in California, New York, Boston, Las Vegas and Florida and without a doubt, Craig Marks, the owner of Tru-Fit is light years ahead of all of the rest in knowledge, experience, creativity and personality. Craig has complete patience and is a master at his craft. He is very modest so you would never know he has been interviewed many times by national and international media such as CNN for his training knowledge and his Parkinson's fitness program. So, what you get here is an incredibally talented trainer who gives back to the community and will ensure you reach your fitness goals.

I had been looking for a personal trainer that would not require a gym membership for a while, but I was unsure about finding one online. I finally decided to give it a try, and I found MillerFit. Matthew totally exceeded my expectations by responding to my inquiry right away and matching me with Audri, the nicest and most caring trainer ever. She designed an exercise program tailored to my 60-year-old body, and I feel great and super motivated. I highly recommend using MillerFit services.

From the very start j&r fitness was a joy to work with. Within minutes of me reaching out I was set up with my personal trainer, they made everything so easy for me. To be honest the idea of getting into the gym was intimidating and stressful, I was worried because I have no experience in the gym and I didn’t know how to go about looking for a personal trainer but j&r fitness and their staff made me feel so welcome and they made the process so easy that I can’t wait to get into the gym and begin building the new me. All the staff here is extremely responsive and professional. If your looking for a company that’s gonna guide you though the process from beginning to end in a profesional and responsive way I would definitely recommend reaching out to j&r fitness.

My experience with Corey has been nothing less than exceptional! He is undeniably reliable and consistent when planning workouts for the week, and, being that I'm a teacher, that is extremely important to me! At our first meeting, he allowed me to train at my own pace to see where I was athletically, and since then I've gradually started to be challenged by all different routines and workouts, which I believe is one of the most important concepts when working with a personal trainer... Without a bit of challenge, there will be no change! (And this is coming from a previous "go to gym and don't step off the treadmill kind of girl!). I've been training with him for about a month now and I am already seeing great changes in my body that I've literally never seen before. If you're looking for a professional, knowledgeable, and consistent trainer that will work hard to help you achieve your goals, Corey is your guy!

Don got back to me in less than an hour. Very encouraging. I loved his initial workout routine. It’s tailored to my age group and pushes me just enough to sweat and feel the results but not make me want to quit. He even ties it into my weekly yard work routine. I never would’ve thought I could afford a personal trainer, especially one that seems to know about ME."

Don – is an amazing, mature and practical personal trainer. His understanding of myology for those of us over 50 is welcomed and greatly appreciated. Because he is like-minded, he understands the need to warmup before working out. I’m grateful that he takes the time to explain the exercise so that I understand the exercise in order to maximize my time & effort – in order to reap the benefits and most importantly minimize injury; as I don’t bounce back as my younger self once did.

I am a professional musician/singer and am currently on hiatus from a recent 14 month tour. I will be resuming a 10 month tour in March of 2019 and need to be in great stage shape. Being that I also have lower back issues, it was important for me to find a personal trainer with a very strong background in spinal issues. Out of the ordinary, my management submitted a request for me on Thumbtack and I received 10 responses very quickly. My orthopedic physician and I sifted through all of them and after asking several questions, Craig Marks was the one I chose based on his credentials, experience, knowledge, and honesty. It was also encouraging that he has worked with many professional singers, athletes and celebrities and is very respectful of our privacy. After meeting with Craig and going over my goals, medical history and what I required to be in "stage shape," Craig put together an outstanding program. I've trained with him only 4 times so far and could not be happier. He also makes it easy to reach him via telephone if I have any questions. Once I resume my tour in March, I will continue to train with Craig several times per week via Skype. Overall, phenomenal trainer and I highly recommend him.
