Jay was very thorough and attentive. He explained math so I could understand it and gave me a learning plan I could work with. I would definitely recommend his services to anyone struggling in math or wanting to go back to school.

My son had never had a tutor before and wasn't sure, how tutoring could be done in case of such class as AP English. However, right away (after very few lessons) he noticed the values he got from Ms. McHugh's lessons. She is very knowledgeable and capable of connecting to a student the best way, so that learning becomes easy and efficient.

Carlton, is absolutely wonderful not to mention an amazing math tutor. My son Maddox was failing Algebra and with just one month left of school I decided to hire Carlton to see if he could help him bring his grade up. Thanks to Carlton, Maddox is passing his Algebra class! Carlton teaches my son in a way that he can understand and apply the different formulas. Every child learns differently, and Algebra is a difficult subject for most middle school students like my son. I'm so happy that Carlton was able to help! Also, Carlton was very flexible and worked with our schedule and budget. I totally recommend Carlton and will be reaching out to him again in the future if needed! Thanks Carlton!!!

Dr. Fikar tutored my son in preparation for his SAT's. My son was very happy with Dr. Fikar's knowledge, tutoring style, and subject content. My son was a very motivated student, raising his SAT scores by 130 points in about six weeks (we wish we had started tutoring sooner). With his increased scores and high GPA, my son received very large scholarships to three schools, but decided to attend the University of Southern California. Thank you, Dr. Fikar, for your part in helping my son reach his dreams.

My son is a student at TimberCreek High school and he has been struggling with Honors Geometry. Jim has been helping him with solving and with formulas. My son likes how patient Jim is and how he will explain and work at your pace. He also tries to be flexible if extra help is needed with upcoming test.

My experience with this professor is relating to Math. I have taken college math at two different local colleges. In both cases, I took a math course online. I want to note I am a single mom of two small children and work full time. My math skills are not the best, so I took remedial math to try and brush up on some of my skills. This professor takes her subject to a whole new level. She not only offers that stuff you need to take, she also adds helpful videos that she records via a tube link. For a working young older or just busy personal this is a resource you WILL not find! Math is a really hard subject for some folks, I can find math subjects all over the internet but the process you might see may not fit an academic approach, or the shortcuts may, in fact, lead to the wrong answer. This process shows the process start to finish and leaves it in a way that you can get to it over and over again. Whether you work with this professor at a school or hire her for training, you will not only get the well-taught lesson you will have the ability to learn at your pace and be able to access the materials after hours, this is a benefit more teaching folks need to offer. I have a better grasp of math and I owe that to the hard work from this professor. Thanks, Mrs. W!

Ian was instrumental in my getting through my high-school math and physics. Ian had tutored me over the course of my junior and senior year. He was able to make my algebra, trig and physics classes much more easily understood. He is a very smart and nice man. Sky Faneco

Two years ago we took my grandson out of a brick and mortar school. We searched for someone that works very well with special needs children and Ashley fits the bill with what we were seeking. We also wanted someone that worked online and what really attracted us to Ashley is working with my grandson face to face on Skype. After the first meeting with my grandson, we saw an excitement in him that we had not seen with others we have had working with him. Ashley presented a schedule that really impressed my grandson's mother and when I tell my grandson it is time for tutoring he is running to the computer for his tutoring session with Ashley. Thank you Ashley.

Kasen is an excellent tutor. She has worked with my daughter for the past three years in all subjects. My daughter has some unique challenges with school. Kasen keeps her engaged in the lesson while holding her to a high standard in her work. She has a wonderful rapport with my daughter and is a great role model for my 15 year old. She is a joy to work with. Lisa W.

When I was in middle school I had a low score/points in my reading.Ana Castro helped me achieve getting a higher score by tutoring me for two or three days a week afterschool. She also helped me to read more fluently and I thank her for that. I wasn't the only one she helped, she has helped other people as well.

Years ago, when my son, Jacob, the youngest of my 4 children, was in elementary school and decided he wanted to take piano lessons, I knew without hesitation that Alayne Galbreath was the perfect music teacher for him. Ms Galbreath has been an elementary school teacher for many years and was Kindergarten teacher to Jacob's 2 older brothers. I was always impressed by how kind and caring Ms Galbreath was with all her students and their parents. Her patience and calm nature always amazed me...and years later, it still does! Jacob took piano lessons from Ms Galbreath for about 10 years until he moved away to attend college in the Summer of 2014. Jacob absolutely enjoyed going to his lessons and never in those years wanted to skip one, even if he had not practiced during the week like he should have. The reason is because Ms Galbreath makes those she has contact with feel welcomed and like they matter to her. Jacob looked forward to going to his lessons each week as much to visit Ms Galbreath as he did to learn music. My only regret is that my older children did not have the same opportunity and positive experience to learn about music in a fun and nurturing way like Jacob did. On his list of those who have been positive influences in Jacob's life, Ms Galbreath ranks at the top of his list. While in elementary school, Jacob also enjoyed taking recorder lessons from Ms Galbreath. I appreciate that she had always been flexible with lesson times over the years when Jacob was involved in sports, school obligations, had doctors appointments and other events that impact our daily schedules. I am confident that anyone who takes music lessons from Ms Galbreath, and/or anyone who meets her, will not be disappointed.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
