Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

How long does it take to install backsplash?

The time it takes to install backsplash depends on the size of the area and the type of materials you’re using. But generally, it’ll take a few days to finish the project. Porcelain or ceramic tile may take less time than that, while very small glass tiles or complicated designs are likely to add time.

Chat with the best tile specialists to find out how long it will take to install a backsplash in your home.

Does tile flooring increase home value?

Having a tile floor may increase your home’s value, but it might depend on the type of tile you install and the trends in the real estate market.

Chat with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out what types of home repairs and remodeling projects you should tackle before you put your home on the market. It might make sense to add new tiles when renovating your kitchen or bathroom, for example.

If you decide to include new tiling in your home remodeling project, contact the best tile installation pros near you to get free estimates.

Which is better: porcelain or ceramic tile?

Porcelain tiles are more durable and have a longer lifespan than ceramic tile. If you're installing flooring in an area with high traffic or lots of heavy furniture, porcelain tiles will look better for longer. They’re also very easy to clean and maintain. Porcelain is also very water-resistant and can hold up in places like bathrooms and rooms with jacuzzis, hot tubs, or swimming pools.

But if the cost is your top priority, ceramic tiles are often more affordable. Ceramic tile prices start as low as $0.45 or $0.50 per square foot, and porcelain tile starts at $3 per square foot.

Can you tile over a tile backsplash?

Yes, you can tile over your existing kitchen backsplash if you want a fresh, new look. This will only work if the surface is smooth and there are no cracked or uneven backsplash tiles in the wall. If you have a few problem tiles, simply remove and reinstall them before you tile over the wall.

In general, it’s better to start with a blank wall. However, you may save time by simply tiling over your existing tile backsplash. When in doubt, always consult a tiling professional.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

What’s the difference between porcelain and ceramic tile?

Ceramic and porcelain are some of the more popular types of tile, but there are a few differences:

Porcelain Tile

Ceramic Tile

More durable, have a longer lifespan

Cheaper, easier to install

Better for high-traffic areas

Recommended for interior floors, walls

Slightly more water-resistant

Softer, easier to cut

Consult with a top tile contractor near you and get free estimates on how much installing tile will cost you.

What is the best tile?

There are many different types of tile to choose from, and they all have unique benefits when it comes to aesthetics, longevity, durability and safety.

Porcelain and ceramic tile are often popular in kitchens and bathrooms because they are water-resistant, making them a go-to choice for floors and backsplashes. Marble tile is also a great choice for kitchen and bathroom floors, and granite tiles are popular for countertops.

Consult with a tile installation professional to figure out what type of tile you should install in your home.

What is the easiest backsplash to install?

Peel-and-stick tiles are the easiest backsplash to install, as they don’t require any materials or preparation work besides measuring.

Ceramic tile, a popular choice for many homeowners, is a fairly simple installation choice for backsplash, and it comes in almost any color and pattern.

Glass tile is a bit more difficult to install than ceramic, while stone or marble tile tends to be the most expensive.

Adi did a great job on our kitchen backsplash. He came and reviewed the project and quoted us a fair price later that day. He showed up on time each day the following week and methodically and skillfully completed the project. The job required many creative solutions because our drywall was in bad shape and countertops weren’t flush to the wall. Adi cleaned up the drywall and installed new drywall where necessary in order to solve the problem. When it came time to install the backsplash tile, Adi was meticulous about getting the pattern perfect—great attention to detail. We also had Adi fix two drywall issues in our ceiling and after he patched and painted you would never know the issues had been there. Great work Adi, and it was a pleasure getting to know you! We’d definitely recommend his work and would (and likely will) hire him again.

Casa Nova was great from the viewpoint that he replied timely to my request and was punctual; however I’m rating 3 stars based on his actual craftsmanship. The job was to install marble backsplash in the kitchen- The job was completed in one day which resulted in me having scrub the grout off the tiles the following day which requires a LOT of elbow grease and is extremely time consuming, and upon further inspection, I noticed that a lot of my marble tile had been nicked/chipped.

Harold is an amazing professional who cares about his craft and his customer! We had his team install our kitchen backsplash— they did a great job, but there were a few areas that we had hoped were cleaner. I explained them to Harold, and he and his team came over the next day to correct them. They were thoughtful, careful, and did an amazing job. You could tell it was really important to them that I was 100% satisfied. Highly recommend this company to do your work!

I am extremey pleased with the services provided by the folks at New Tile. They were very responsive even though I first contacted them on a weekend and the work speaks for itself. Rodrigo did an amazing job installing our backsplash and fixing the few floor tiles I needed to repair. My house is from 1940 and it is very uneven, we’ve had issues with leveling on just about everything we’ve done with our kitchen, but Rodrigo worked through the challenges and made it look amazing. The results exceeded our expectations. Price was excellent (and I got about 5 quotes). I went with them because of their excellent reviews and they did not disappoint! If you’re looking for someone to help you with any tile installation, go with these guys.

Do not use this Floor 2 Ceiling Tile and Stone. Nickolas Wheatley is extremely unprofessional and disrespectful. I regret using him to install backsplash in my kitchen and fireplace. First, he shows up to the job late in the morning, each day, with no call explaining his tardiness. Then when he works, he leaves doors open, drops material and debris all over the floor. Yells at me and my grandmother several times and goes up on his pricing as the job goes on. The worst thing of all, he scammed me out of money. I purchased additional tile at his request, it turns out to be too much, I return it and the return goes on his credit card. He never notifies me that he received funds back and when I call him to let him know, he tells me that he deserves it. I’ve never been so offended. This guy should be removed from Thumbtack. Do not waste your time with this one. He’s a joke.
