Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

Paulo was professional and responded very quickly to my request to remove vinyl flooring from my quest bath and install tile before my guests arrive for the weekend. The tile I selected required cutting the pieces to fit neatly around the base boards. I would highly recommend Paulo and will be using his services in the near future to install tile thru out my home.

Excellent!! Not only is a Gabrini a nice young man his work was outstanding. We hired him to remove and replace a tile back splash. He sealed off the work area to reduce the dust, he cleaned up the area and removed all waste staying late to finish the job. Gabrini was very careful and did not waste any tile therefore we have several boxes to return. I would not hesitate to hire him. Margaret

Isaac was very responsive, came out and provided an estimate and returned the next day to complete the project. He was prompt, efficient and completed the work in one day. His rate was reasonable and he made sure I was aware of what he was doing and asked for my input to ensure my satisfaction with the tile pattern. He cleaned up when he was finished and informed me of how long to wait for tile grout to set. I will use him again for any future projects.

Leonardo and his crew tiled 80% of our 11,000 square foot building in about a week. We were in a time crunch because we needed the job completed before a specific event. They showed up daily (in this industry, this fact alone seems to be a miracle) and worked consistently to make sure the job was done. They worked efficiently (kept things organized and methodical) and the quality of the work was high. Several people have commented on how well the tiling was done and how good our floors look!

Working with Randy was an absolute pleasure! Even when we completely changed our mind half way through the job, he remained patient with us and even went to Floor and Decor to help us pick out a new tile! I have never seen service like that. His whole goal was to make sure we were satisfied with the final job. I will definitely recommend and use him again!

Leonardo was very quick to respond. He made himself available right away to look at the job and provide a quote. His quote wasn’t the lowest, but not the highest and very reasonable (here’s a hint: don’t over-pay, but don’t take a super low quote either. You get what you pay for, so take the mid to high range). Leonardo was very polite and professional, and made room on his schedule very quickly. Also there was one problem that I had with the way the tile and metal edge was done in the shower niche. He was polite/professional, and offered a solution very quickly. It came out great. On top of that he fixed a problem that was created by the framing and drywall guys for a very reasonable additional cost. I’ve learned over the years of work being done on my fixer upper house that problems and miscommunications are going to happen. I judge a contractor both by the quality of the work and by how they deal with issues when they happen. Leonardo was easy to deal with, and His final product was great!

DO NOT HIRE! I had planned to hire this guy, but Nathan was very unprofessional and rude. We had a 2:30 appt at my rental property in Dekalb. After I drove 50 mins to get there from work, he text me FIVE mins b4 to ask if he could move the appt to 3:30...I had just pulled in the driveway! Since I had driven so long, I told him I'd wait but he needed to be on time. Five mins later he told me good luck with finding a tile installer and that he had no time for attitude! What?! He then tried to argue with me via text after I questioned his response about 'no time for attitude' when he clearly didn't value my time, his agreement to meet me or my schedule. A true professional would have apologized and tried to make things right. With the sarcasm and anger displayed in his text replies, this guy won't be in business long. Sometimes it's more about the soft skills you have and not so much about your hard skills you posses!
