I have had an excellent experience using Above Grade Educational Services. Jocelyn has been very helpful and responsive in helping me to set up my tutoring and my tutor, Fio, has been excellent. Each session with her is helpful and works to build on my skills and she is responsive to any questions or requests I have for extra practice. Grateful I found this company!

I have been lucky enough to have Mr. Goodman's help throughout the majority of my academic life. While participating in homeschooling through the end of elementary school and beginning of middle school, he was my instructor in mathematics each year. Additionally, Mr. Goodman was extremely helpful as a supplemental tutor when I needed help with my public high school math courses. I have received tremendous aid most recently in my college courses (both with my college course material, and in helping me to stay fresh with basic skills). Overall, I would highly recommend Mr. Goodman's tutoring services for any stage of learning. He has been extremely helpful and dedicated, both locally and long distance.

Nick was professional, prompt and did a great job tutoring my 13-year-old son, who dreads the idea of being tutored. My son actually had a smile on his face when Nick left (which never happens with tutoring), and said Nick helped him understand his work much better. He’s looking forward to their next session and so am I!

I tried to study and practice on my own for the GRE, but after I got my terrible scores back I knew I needed tutoring. My tutor was always punctual (often earlier than I was!) and thoughtfully prepared for our sessions based on my needs. I did poorly in the GRE quant section, so we worked on improving my confidence and speed (a lot of focus on strategy) doing GRE math problems. After re-taking the test, I scored 9 points higher! Obviously, I had to work hard to get these results, but a huge chunk of my success is because of my tutor.

Mrs. Chiang is a fantastic teacher, who taught our daughter in the 4th grade. She is very caring and kind, compassionate, and listens well to parents and students. She has a wonderful teaching voice too, which I can't explain. It's very soothing to listen too. Not abrasive. My daughter absolutely adored her! My daughter did extremely well in her class and I'm sure that is a reflection on Mrs. Chiang as well. We will miss Mrs. Chiang as our daughter rises up to the 5th grade.

Zahra is the ONLY person that was able to help me truly understand my math. No teacher or tutor explained it like her. She is the most patient person too.

I highly recommend Kellae! Kellae came to my son's rescue, and we were so grateful for her. My son was a senior and attended Peachtree Ridge High School. He began to experience "senioritis." We needed a someone to that could assist my son and improve his GPA to keep his basketball and college eligibility status. Kellae was that person! My son can testify to this and is delighted with Kellae's teaching style. My son significantly improved in all his classes and by the end of the year his GPA was the highest it has been since Middle School. Kellae went as far as to provide my son with mentoring. She also used real-world concepts to help him master difficult concepts and improved his competence and self-confidence. When Kellae became my son’s Academic Coach, he became motivated, organized, and begin to pass every test when she came into our life. This was more than we could ever dreamed and expected! Kellae is pleasant, and I highly recommend her to anyone. You will find that above being a teacher, she is devoted, kindhearted, and her compassion demonstrations she is willing to go above and beyond to help students succeed.

We found Ms. Terri when our daughter was in 1st grade and was struggling with writing. Ms. Terri worked with her using Handwriting Without Tears and it worked like a charm! Ms. Terri was able to connect with our daughter one on one using fun games and learning ‘tricks’ which opened up her learning potential. We are forever grateful we found Ms. Terri! We continued to work with her through 2ns and 3rd grade because she is just so wonderful. We highly recommend Terri for tutoring.

Melissa has been tutoring both our children for about 4 years. Both were behind when they started with her, both are in the advanced classes now. Our 5th grader scored in the top 96% on the standardized Iowa test, our 3rd grader in the top 94% - we credit Melissa's tutoring for those scores. She's great about communicating with teachers to find out where the kids need help. Each of our children learn differently...Melissa is able to find fun and creative ways to craft custom learning plans to maximize her time with them.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
    • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
