Jeff did a great job for us. We hired him to clean and inspect our chimney and fireplace.  We thought we might have to spend a few thousand dollars on a liner, but he found that our chimney was in good shape overall, and our issues could be fixed with repairs that were much less costly.  Besides the cleaning, he ended up replacing a broken damper and strengthening areas of weak mortar. He also found seals on other roof vents that were either cracked or loose.  He repaired/replaced those, stopping a major leak potential in our attic.   Jeff also   cleared off other debris around the roof and gutters.  Overall, he did great work at a price better than we anticipated.

High winds have blown loose some fascia along the side of our roof (as you can see in the photos, the metal trim between the roof and the siding). Some pieces were blown off and some pieces were bent and dangling. We weren't getting any leaks or anything, it was mostly annoying/unsightly. I initially uploaded some photos and answered some questions from Thumbtack. Baker Bros. Exteriors was one of five respondents. 2 of the 5 included rough preliminary estimates. I chose Baker Bros. due to the low price, willingness to give me a rough price rather than a song and dance, responsiveness, and high rating. Shaun from Baker Brothers showed up on time for a free estimate and the actual quote was a little higher ($400 vs. the initial $225) once he was able to see it in person but he was able to take care of the problem right away so we decided to give them a shot. It took about 2 hours and I'm no expert, but Shaun seemed to be taking care in his work and the finished product looks good to me.

This is my first time using Thumbtack and honestly, I am really satisfied with water heater installation from Walter. Our Water heater was leaking (19 years old) and needed immediate replacement since it was leaking. I was calling all over for the contractors for prices and they all ranged over $1000. Also, other contractors were willing to charge extra fees and unnecessary county code. Walter was professional and very kind. He explained in details about the water heaters and purchasing county code is not necessary. He also showed up at home depot 7 in the morning and picked all the necessary parts and water heater. All I needed to do was to make the purchase. Also, he delivered water heater to my home AT NO ADDITIONAL COST. He finished the work in a timely manner and cleaned up well. I am REALLY satisfied with his service. Walter is going to my plumber and I am going to introduce him to my friends and neighbours. His labour cost is very affordable and reasonable compare to other contractors. I was able to save hundreds of dollars in labour cost. Overall you will never regret hiring Hi solution and Walter is the guy. He is a licensed contractor.

Minor water damage on our bathroom ceiling indicated a roof leak. We determined the water was coming in through the roof vent pipe and that the pipe collar needed replacing. Thomas responded quickly to my request for a bid with what I felt was a fair price for the work. We arranged a time for him to come to the house. Before the appointed time, he sent a msg letting us know he was on his way. Having been in commercial project mgmnt for 15 yrs, I am familiar with how to correctly flash and seal roof stack pipes. Thomas removed the damaged collar, added a water/ice shield, replaced shingles were needed, and applied sealant where needed. He worked quickly and cleanly. Thomas has thorough knowledge of roofing systems and applications and is clearly experienced in repairing roofs. His business model is to focus on roof inspections and repairs. He does not install roofs. This allows him to charge a reasonable fee that businesses that are primarily roof installation companies are unable to do - there is a cost to take a person of an installation crew in order to do a small roof repair. The price for the work was in line with what I felt was fair. Highly recommend Thomas with Nova CS for roof repairs and/inspections.

I hired RB to repair drywall which included knicks in @ four places plus three holes from door knobs hitting into the drywall; repair wooden gate which included re-nailing to slates (+ RB further fortified gate a little extra at no charge); drywall repair over stove from water/ heat damage; installed 3 door stops; screwed on two vents (no charge) and repaired part of the fascia/ soffit on roof which was disconnecting from roof. He arrived when he said, did more than I asked him to do, finished early, repaired the drywall very well/ no visible signs, and quoted a reasonable price on the jobs I hired him to do. I would hire him again.

We’ve had PCS complete numerous projects at our home including a new roof (including metal roofing), siding, gutters, a beautiful new custom rail system for the main stairway in addition to drywall/tile/lighting work due to a flood. Mark has always been courteous, professional and easy to work with as his company continually provided a quality product at a great value. We would highly recommend PCS for your next home project.

We interviewed a number of roofing contractors and Steve from Caliber Roofing provided a much more practical solution to our roofing needs. While others wanted to add on many extra products, Steve professionally advised what to do and not do. His crew provided excellent workmanship and were very pleasant. They take pride in their work. With all this work quality, Caliber Roofing was still by far the lowest estimate than any others I interviewed. I would highly recommend them to others.

After we moved into our newly renovated home, we found out we had a HUGE leak in our basement. The leak was causing mold on the entire basement and dry walls. Our contractor hired someone to do the waterproofing during the renovation however we quickly realized we had to call a professional. We found MJ HOMES SERVICES & FLOOD RESTORATION on the internet. We called about 5 different companies and had MJ HOME SERVICES be the only ones that showed up on time (the same day we called). Their quote was affordable than the other quotes however it was worth every dime. MJ HOMES employees were extremely knowledgeable. They immediately found the issue and started working within 2 days. The work was both internal and external. Workers showed up at 8am and left at 7pm. They were quiet and worked clean. In addition, they had to dig in our basement and replace drywall. We didn't even feel we had construction in the house. The basement is dry and we are extremely happy.

We are pleased with the amount of dedication and care applied not only to the initial project for the roof and ceiling but to their awareness to other issues in our bathroom. Gabby and her associate kept us informed of progress and discoveries of issues that were revealed. I would highly refer this company. They were flexible with scheduling too.

We met with several contractors before deciding on JCC. We went with them because they were friendly and professional. From the time we signed our contract with them, to the time they delivered the materials and completed the roof was exactly one week. On the day of the installation they came exactly when they said they would and finished the job in one day. Throughout the day, we received photo updates from Jeff on how the job was coming along. We will not hesitate to use JCC again for any large scale home improvement projects.

The owner, Phillip, was quick to respond and thoroughly answered all of my questions in the weeks leading up to the project. Their pricing was fair and competitive and he included a 25 year transferrable warranty with the new roof (other contractors offered non transferrable 6-10 year warranties). There was some initial miss-communication about including a skylight installation in the project and he assumed it was a replacement rather than new installation, but he honored his original quote and included the installation at no additional cost. His team promptly returned to repair a leak in one of the skylights a few weeks later and everything has been leak-free since. Overall very good experience and would recommend him to others needing full roof replacements.

Goodman and his Supreme Home Services team were professional, punctual, fairly prices, and most importantly did a good job on roof installation. Now, the final verdict can’t be given until the next good rain, but that withstanding, I’d definitely utilize his services again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
