My job decided to put me in charge of catering our fall employee appreciation event. I wasn’t even sure where to start since I was not familiar with any caterers in the Montgomery County area. So I decided to go to the trusty internet to start my search. I came across thumbtack which is a great site by the way. You basically enter what you are looking for and like magic you start to receive quotes from different caterers in your area. Chef Kevin Reed was very prompt with his response and also included a sample menu with his quote which I thought was excellent. We conversed over email for a while and I was convinced this was the man for the job. I also was adamant about supporting a local small black business. The day of the event, He arrived on time along with his help. I told him what our theme would be and he nailed the set up perfectly. A beautiful fall theme was laid out in our employee lounge right before my eyes. The Chef and his staff were very personable and pleasant to work with. The food was hot, very good and healthy. My coworkers were very impressed with the food and service. I would definitely recommend his services. Hopefully we will be working together again soon on our company Holiday event. We have over 180 employees here and he was able to provide plenty of food and we had lots of leftovers. Kevin is top notch. Highly recommended.

I am the family party planner so when we planned a company sponsored happy hour, I was tasked with finding a caterer. I received several proposal from caterers on Thumbtack but decided on Chef Myles for his total solution. Everything was included; no hidden costs after the contract was signed. The food was prepared on premises under less than perfect conditions in an office environment with a small kitchen. The food was excellent and plentiful. Chef Myles staff were friendly and accomodating. I received many kudos for my selection of the caterer and the delicious food but the kudos should definitely go to Chef Myles and his staff. Thanks, for making me look good Chef Myles!

Stone Hill Catering did a fantastic job for my daughter's wedding!! Many of the guests at the wedding commented on the how delicious the food was. Their service was excellent as well! They made the meal portion of the reception totally carefree for us. We literally didn't need to give it a thought! I would highly recommend them for any catering event! My husband and I would not hesitate to call upon them in the future for any event we might have. The food and service were over the top at a reasonable price!

Chef Matt was hired to cook for a Cooking Party I threw to honor my sister as a Bride to Be. He was very easy to coordinate with prior to the event, he was prompt and provided great menu options to choose from. On the day of the event, he was very organized and timely. We were a group of 10 women and he was very patient with us! Chef Matt demoed 4 recipes with us and was a great teacher, providing neat tricks and tips throughout the demo. After the meal was finished, he cleaned the kitchen and left everything just as it was prior to the event. The food was delicious!!!! I would 100% recommend Chef Matt to anyone looking to have an at-home restaurant experience!

I enjoyed working with Dianna Gilbert of Catering Reserved because on my initial inquiry for caterers on thumbtack, she responded immediately. She listened to my requests and provided the menu I wanted. Ms Gilbert responded right away to any questions or concerns I had because this was all being planned from out of state. On the night of the dinner, the food arrived on time and was set up as she promised and I received many many compliments on the menu from my guests.

We had an office holiday gala with over 125 people in attendance and I needed a caterer, so I reached out to thumbtack here to get quotes. Richard was the only one who actually called me to speak more about the needs of the party. This made him stand out above the rest. Besides that, he had great pricing, and was easy to get ahold of throughout the whole process. The night of the event went seamlessly. Our guests loved the food, and his staff rocked the house!! I will most definitely be referring him to other people I know, and use him again in the future for our next event! Thanks Richard! -Keller Williams Capital Properties, Fairfax

I loved each balloon creation. I will definitely contact her for my next event. The decorative uniqueness that it added to my affair was Top Notch. She responded to each of my messages within hours and minutes. As far as punctuality I will just say this. She beat me to my own event! She arrived probably 40 minutes before I did and I wasn't late 😁. Top Notch!!!

We hired Healthy Catering for a party at our home for 80 guests. Nasrin proposed a menu that included appetizers, entrees and desserts. Everything went well on the day of the event. Nasrin went the extra mile by making extra veg dishes that we didn't order. Our guests loved her vegetarian and non-veg dishes. Her food is wholesome and better than most restaurants that we've visited. I would definitely hire Nasrin again.

Chef Niki catered my promotion dinner at my firehouse. I appreciated how I was able to view and sign the contract online and pay through a cash app. However, I was surprised to pay in full prior to delivery of service but I admit to being naive about the process of catering an event. Nikki was fair in price. The amount of food was very generous. The food was delish and the guys are still talking about how tasty it was. I only gave four and not five stars due to the late arrival of food. (40mins after agreed time.) Overall, I would recommend Chef Nikki to cater future events.

We hired Haute Eatz to cater my Mom's 50th birthday party (40 or so people). Candice and her team did a fantastic job. Leading up to the event, Candice always responded punctually to my messages and was flexible with the menu. The food was fantastic and my family and I did not have to do a thing. If you are looking for great food and a great team, I would certainly recommend Haute Eatz.

Karen Wilder provided catering for my New Years Eve 2016 wedding. The food was excellent! Everything was well seasoned, tender, and flavorful. My wedding did not have a traditional kitchen with a stove, we used chafing dishes. Nevertheless, the food was hot as though it had just come out of the oven! We had a cocktail hour where her staff passed around appetizers - the lamb chops, sushi, and Maryland crab cakes were exceptional! The bartender was quick to serve drinks, and made very good drinks. She also delivered drinks to guests' tables. The staff cleaned up afterwards, and contained any left over food for us after the event. You cannot go wrong with this food! Top notch!

I really wish I could give him more than five stars. Deshawn is more than exceptional. He was super professional. This being my first time planning a party of this magnitude, he helped me every step of the way. He created a wonderful menu including appitzers and everything was so delicious. In fact the food was so good that guests of the party did actively seek me out to get his information. His food was the highlight of the event. I'm so blessed to have found such a talented chef to cater my party. He's super professional, talented, punctual, and reasonably priced. I will definitely be utilizing his services for all of my future catering needs. Ps. His greens are the best I've ever had..

Jose has staffed two major events for me and he and his staff are amazing. They are professional, timely and great to work with. Jose was great with communicating, and very flexible with the ongoing changes that occur when staffing large events. I highly recommend him! I wouldn’t think to use anyone else.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
