Allen responded right away to my request and we got on the phone to discuss my project. He gave me lots of information and provided a lot of answers to my questions, way more than he reasonably would be expected to without any commitment from me yet. He was able to get out right away and work on the project. He was professional, prompt, and communicative. His work appears to be thoroughly planned and flawlessly executed. He walked me through what he was doing anytime it left "the norm" of what the expected work would be, and he was up front about cost ramifications of those decisions. He answered all my questions on site and educated me on what he was seeing and doing to fix our issue. Anytime I have a plumbing project, I will be calling Spitfire Plumbing.

Bart was a little later than scheduled but performed the required work in just a very few minutes. Ultimately it was something that I could have done myself but he was very good about explaining what was done. I would use him again in the event I have future plumbing issues.

Not only was Gary quick to respond, he was very communicative throughout the process. There were some complications as I tried to replace a sink, and Gary worked diligently to work through them and resolved the matter in an efficient manner. Most important, he was fair, honest and did excellent work. Perhaps best of all, Gary is a master plumber, which was evident in his work. Not that I'm hoping to have more plumbing needs, but I certainly had a great experience with Gary. I would highly recommend him for your plumbing needs.

Barry was a joy to work with. He knows his craft well and very reasonable rates. He did a remodel of our bathroom from start to finish and it turned out beautifully ( installed new cabinets, tiled floor, installed toilet, faucets, plumbing and drywall). He is not only a good at his job but he is a nice guy. I have recommended him to family and friends and would hire him in the future.

After having a plumbing company come out to clear a drain - and having them say the job was near impossible and they would have to cut the waste stack in 3 places, replace the P trap on the Laundry Tubs and that pipe would likely not fit the old laundry tubs, and oh by the way, it might still need a drain cleaning (now up to about a 1400-1800 job - Mike dropped in. He did the cleaning in 20 minutes. He got by the difficult juncture. He charged less than the other company quoted for the clean out, and he showed up within 1 hour. Hire this guy.

Picture this. ...a flooded house, with endless tussle with the insurance company and a gloomy moldy smell , until I met Julio. From hard wood floor installation, plumbing in the bathroom, installing a storm door, refinishing partial basement from water damage to helping with other handy jobs that were not even part of the agreement, because he is s perfectionist. The best part of it all was his professionalism. He treated my home with respect and I am happy to come home again.

Brian and Zach were great. I hired them to do replace my bathtub drain, install a new shower valve, and put shut offs on the bathroom sink plumbing. They showed up on time, were very personable, and got the work done fast. They tested everything before they left, and let me know if there were any troubles to call them immediately, and they would drop by whenever it's convenient. Brian's pricing was reasonable, and right on the mark from the estimate he quoted me over the phone. I have a friend who needs some plumbing work done, and I've already referred Brian and Zach. Also, if I ever have any further plumbing needs, they will be my first call. Thank you, Brian and Zach! A job well done!

Harry was on time and professional. Scheduling work with him was very easy, and his price was in the range I had expected to pay. When he arrived onsite, it was determined that one of the projects would not be possible for this visit. Harry and I negotiated to an agreeable amount, and I couldn't be happier with the work he performed. Overall, I am very satisfied with this experience, and will seek out Harry again when I have plumbing projects.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

    • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
    • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
    • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
    • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
    • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

    • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
    • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
    • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
