Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

How long does it take to install backsplash?

The time it takes to install backsplash depends on the size of the area and the type of materials you’re using. But generally, it’ll take a few days to finish the project. Porcelain or ceramic tile may take less time than that, while very small glass tiles or complicated designs are likely to add time.

Chat with the best tile specialists to find out how long it will take to install a backsplash in your home.

Does tile flooring increase home value?

Having a tile floor may increase your home’s value, but it might depend on the type of tile you install and the trends in the real estate market.

Chat with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out what types of home repairs and remodeling projects you should tackle before you put your home on the market. It might make sense to add new tiles when renovating your kitchen or bathroom, for example.

Which is better: porcelain or ceramic tile?

Porcelain tiles are more durable and have a longer lifespan than ceramic tile. If you're installing flooring in an area with high traffic or lots of heavy furniture, porcelain tiles will look better for longer. They’re also very easy to clean and maintain. Porcelain is also very water-resistant and can hold up in places like bathrooms and rooms with jacuzzis, hot tubs, or swimming pools.

But if the cost is your top priority, ceramic tiles are often more affordable. Ceramic tile prices start as low as $0.45 or $0.50 per square foot, and porcelain tile starts at $3 per square foot.

He was very easy to get a hold of and communicate with. When he came by, he was very personable and knowledgeable. It explained the issue with our tile in our shower and kept the repairs minimal and for a reasonable price. Overall I could not have asked for better experience.

Russ did a great job in the end. After his first pass, there were a few cracked tiles that he happily replaced and made right. He fell just shy of excellent (5 stars) as there were a handful of small issues throughout the process (i.e. several tiles wasted due to poor soft tile & poor blade, failure to catch a few mistakes on his own, left the work area dirty - dried grout that should have been wiped up, put a clear sealant before cleaning the joint - so the mess showed through, but could not be wiped clean). I was able to do the finishing touches myself to make it right, so not a huge deal. But the takeaway should be that he was a pleasure to work with, trustworthy, communicated well, and offered a great value for the service he provided. I would imagine the issues I experienced were most likely anomalies and I would likely use him again in the future for small jobs.

Aldi and Klevis did an amazing job on my kitchen and bathroom tile!! They responded to my request quickly and thoroughly explained what needed to be done to execute the job well. They always ran prices for materials by me before purchasing to make sure that I was okay with it. I already found another project that I want them to do. I would trust these guys with anything-very experienced, trustworthy and easy to work with!

I strongly appreciated this company’s guidance and choosing the right direction for my project. I had a number of Craft and detached tiles due to a previous owners poor installment. While I wanted to just reset and re-grout, Ricardo helped me understand that it would just lead to an even worse looking floor. Well his suggestion meant I would be paying much more, I was planning to redo the floor in the future anyway, and so took his advice on installing a luxury vinyl tile floor in the kitchen. It looks great. It functions very well. Some critical feedback that I gave Ricardo, was wishing the materials he suggested actually existed. I couldn’t find waterproof LVT or underlayment for the price he initially quoted ($1 and next to nothing). The title ended up costing me 220 per square foot, and the underlayment $15 a sheet. Also the thickness of the underlayment I had to get was nearly twice the thickness And now my basement door scrapes the new vinyl floor. I’m glad I know how to remove a door and have the tools to sand it down. Talking with other handymen, Ricardo’s advice on LVT and the materials I ended up purchasing were exactly the right choices, however advice might have been a little gaslighting. I would use Ricardo and his team again.
