Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

How can I find out if a roofer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a roofer is an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by visiting your state or city’s government website. Local governments are providing up-to-date information for residents during this time.

A national guideline is available on CISA’s website, Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page addresses 16 different categories of essential infrastructure sectors, but note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Hired Mike after reading the great reviews on here. He was very detailed in giving me an estimate. Explained everything he planned to do and spoke about different ways to solve the issues (old roof leaking). Showed up exactly when he said he would, did what he said he would and even went beyond that. I will definitely reach out for any future roofing issues. Good honest hard working guy!

I couldn't be more happy with the whole experience working with this company. Great communication, pride in workmanship, value, everything you look for in a company especially when roofing and gutters are not your area of expertise and you have to rely on others for guidance. I Highly recommended and will use again when the time comes.

Residential Roofing & Services has twenty years of experience, works within your timeframe, provides experienced crews that takes pride in quality of workmanship. They use the best products and provide the ultimate value. I would highly recommend Scott and his team. We were concerned about nails being left in our backyard as we have a dog and Scott's team went over every inch of our yard with their magnetic "broom" and not one nail was left! They were careful not to damage any of my flowers and landscaping lights.

Scott and his Team where awesome! From the first day he gave the quote until the last day of the job communication lines stayed open. They produced a great product and help me make modifications to my original design that turned out complementing our home better than we expected. On top of it all...everyone was friendly and very professional. I can tell you that I have an upcoming project to do this spring and with out a doubt I will be calling Scott and using Residential Roofing! You will not go wrong here because when you deal with honest people who do a great job, the outcome is exactly like you hope for.

Scott and his team were wonderful. They got the job scheduled in less than a week and completed in one day. They were punctual, professional, and just a joy to work with. My new roof looks amazing. No leaks at all! My only suggestion would be confirm what around your house you could move for them to make things easier. We have riding mowers that his crew had to take the time to cover to avoid damage because we didn’t know they’d need them moved/covered. This didn’t bother us I just felt and we would’ve gladly done it to make it easier for them. Highly recommend and would use them again without pause.

It was brought to my attention that after a huge storm, some shingles had blown off of my roof. I’m a single mother of two, which means that any kind of unexpected expense is a headache. One of my neighbors tried to coerce me into using his company to do the repairs and also attempted to charge me for just an estimate which ended up being almost 3 times what the guys at RTS gave me. I would recommend RTS to anyone, because they are trustworthy, thorough, fair, punctual, and extremely professional. The whole experience was stellar from start to finish, except the fact that my neighbor tried to take advantage of me, which had absolutely nothing to do with RTS lol. Great job guys, you’ve gained a lifelong customer! 😊
