There's only praise for a job well done by Ellen and her staff. The day I met Ellen she not only helped with planning out the perfect menu but it turns out she's got quite an eye for fashion and helped me pick out a beautiful dress and suit for my fiance. I saw she had talents in many other areas than running a booming catering business. She looked after and anticipated every detail that could have caused a problem and addressed it before hand. The main comment I heard through the day was "where did you find the caterer, her food is amazing." That was often from some very discerning guests that truly knew food. The Salmon was absolutely delicious and we had chosen a mushroom lasagna that was out of this world and the same can be said for the salads. I loved the little individual fruit cups also. Ellen runs her kitchen like a pro, shows up early and all you have to do is let her do her thing. Truly outstanding!!!

We were very pleased with the evening. From the variety of the hors d’oeuvres to the “pasta show” to the service and quality of all the food, we couldn’t have been more pleased. We thought the number of helpers was very appropriate and we were extremely impressed with the bartender's ability to bartend, serve hors d’oeuvres, take responsibility for the table – and all graciously and with a smile. What a difference that makes at a party! NY Catering was a pleasure to deal with!

After exhaustive searches for a great local caterer, I found Chef Lauren on Thumbtack. Each review of Bacco Catering had 5 stars and the comments were all outstanding. I called Lauren immediately and we had an instant connection. My husband and I were planning a backyard party for 20 friends and wanted to do something special. Lauren worked with me in putting together an amazing menu of delicious and unique hors d'oeuvres, small plates and desserts. We communicated quite a bit prior to the party about items needed for the evening, ideas and suggestions to the menu and staff requests. The party was to be outside and we were hoping to enjoy the last of summer. The evening of the party arrived and so did the rain. The weather didn't dampen the mood of the party at all.... in fact, Lauren, Carmel, Mary and Sara were amazing and accommodating- no one even noticed that we were inside! The food was delicious, plentiful and beautifully plated. Our friends raved about the food and were so impressed with the overall presentation. I felt that Lauren had a real pulse on the party and everything was totally under control. The kitchen was spotless afterwards and there was nothing for us to do but to have a glass of wine and relax!

Do you want to know the definition of Excellence? Hire Luisa c/o De Cicco's Event Planning! I have never worked with a more professional, friendly company. Luisa has a way of catering to her client's and making them feel like they're at the top of her priority list. If you need her, drop her an E-mail and she IMMEDIATELY gets back to you. Need a personal Chef to teach you how to cook? Luisa can connect you with top of the line quality professional's that KNOW what they're doing in the kitchen. I'm currently taking lesson's from her Chef and I went from being a novice who's food was either bland, burnt and completely un-edible, to a person who can now chop, dice and make a meal so good, my family calls me asking me to cook for them again. Luisa and her staff are so friendly, so welcoming and very attentive to the needs of the client. Luisa has done a fine job in picking her staff and I’m extremely happy I hired her company because it was worth every penny.

A successful summer in Southampton is a tall order and finding a great chef isn't easy. I was introduced to Chef Aless in 2016 and it was a blessing. She helped make this one of the best years to date. Her menus are consistently delicious and elegant. We have had the pleasure of her being in charge of the kitchen for 20 and 300 guests and she maintains the same cheerful disposition even when curveballs are thrown at her. I highly recommend her for all your catering needs. Lori N House Manager,Southampton NY

Everything was perfect. Alana showed up early and even though she had to park in a fire hydrant stayed until I arrived to greet me and make sure everything looked great. Catering was for private concert for 26 Upper East Side parents and everyone was blown away by the food and even commented on how great it looked and how good she did incorporating some vegetarian options. Will definitely reach out to Alana in the future for events both intimate and large.

Great service and Great food. Mr. Evans was prompted with delivery and professional. The food was fresh. The most popular dish of the night was the jerk wings. The mac and cheese balls was my favorite. If I had to choose a chef to travel when eating healthy on the go, meal prepping and enjoyable food, I would choose Kulinary Kings Catering services. .. Thanks again!!!

T & C Catering did an incredible job for our daughter's Sweet Sixteen. If you want great food, presentation, and reasonable prices, then T & C is the right caterer for you! From the tastings, to menu planning, to execution on the day of our daughter’s Sweet Sixteen, Carol and her staff were remarkable. Carol was so easy to work with and accommodated our request. We are truly grateful…... They catered to both the adults and the teenagers with appetizers such as (sliders, chicken & waffles & scallops wrapped in bacon). My guests are still talking about the delicious sliders (big hit with the younger generation). We had a Caribbean theme that consisted of Jerk chicken, Curry chicken, Oxtails (my daughters favorite) etc. All of the guests raved about the food and the attentiveness of the serving staff. I cannot say enough about T & C Catering, Thank you to the Chef for making the delicious food. You are definitely getting so much more when you hire them. I will absolutely without a doubt hire them for future events. Best, Eric & Lisandra

Our experience with Harvest Specialty Catering and Jason was all that I could ask for. We chose this company for our daughter's barn wedding. Initially, Jason was willing to work with us for a limited portion of our event, something many caterers are NOT willing to do. After time (and a taste testing!) we opted to use him for all but dessert (we had a friend doing the cake.) We so appreciated his flexibility and willingness to work with us. He accommodated us and our changing needs at all points of our journey, even in the midst of his own challenges with equipment issues. We never knew about his difficulties until later, and not from Jason but the venue staff, as he and his crew pulled off a wonderful dinner. Our wedding guests were very complimentary of the food. On every level, we were thrilled with our choice. I would highly recommend this company for your event, whatever it may be.

JP catered a party for us of about 40 adults and 20 kids and we had a great experience working with him - highly recommend his services! He was responsive and flexible during the planning phase, able to modify his gameplan day-of when our rooftop venue got rained out :( and prepped and served the food efficiently, beautifully and notably, without needing anything from us as hosts, letting us truly enjoy the party. On top of all that, all the guests loved the food itself and several have inquired about contacting JP for their own events. I’m happy to make those connections because JP is truly a great chef and a consummate professional!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
