Kavya R. says, "My experience with Chef Mala was one of a kind. I reached out to Mala for a private dinner for my best friend. It was during the pandemic and I wanted a Michelin experience at home. From start to finish the entire experience was incredible. I told Mala about my best friend's favorite foods and some meals I had previously had that were amazing and she created a menu that was just PERFECT. She was extremely professional and responsive, and had quotes for different options to me within a few days. Mala was incredibly flexible with our dietary restrictions. We have severe allergies in our group and, not only did we need a menu planned around those allergies, we also requested that Mala use our kitchen utensils, pans, knives, etc. (Of course, we purchased the utensils needed that we did not already have.) Mala was incredibly easy to work with and prepared a fabulous meal in our kitchen using only our kitchen tools, giving us a peace of mind we typically don't get at restaurants. On the day of the dinner, Mala was on-time and it was a joy talking to her as she prepared our meal. She is so knowledgeable and we learned so much about the ingredients and her techniques. She sat down with us for part of the meal and we just loved talking with her and getting to know her. The food itself was just fantastic. It was one of the best meals I have had in my entire life, certainly better than the meals I have had at 3-star Michelin restaurants. I was also shocked at what an incredible value the whole experience was. We spent less than half of what we would have at a 3-star Michelin. And it was really nice to be able to purchase our own wine for pairings. On top of the financial value, there was also an intrinsic value that I wasn't really expecting. It was SO nice to be able to enjoy this meal at home - wearing cozy clothes, drinking cocktails on the patio beforehand, getting up and dancing between courses, settling in for a movie afterwards. The experience had the things we love about fine dining (impeccable food and service) without the stuffiness of fine dining, which really allowed us to loosen up and just spend quality time with one another. TLDR: 10/10, highly recommend, can't wait to do it again."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.

This class was amazing! Chef Moss was a great teacher. I learned to make some outstanding dishes. He is very knowledgable and was able to explain the why and how behind the cooking process for each dish we prepared. It was such an amazing cooking class! I highly recommend it!

Chef Robin did a virtual cooking class for our employees to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month, and it was exactly what we were hoping for! She is incredibly personable, friendly, knowledgable, and a great instructor who knows what she's doing. I'd definitely recommend her!

Nirva gave me a “basic skills” cooking class ahead of me going off to grad school. She was punctual, prepared and really accommodated my needs. For example, because I won’t have much time in school, she focused on teaching me versatile techniques that I could use to make various dishes in a way that is both tasty and quick. Highly recommend!
