Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

They re-tiled a shower wall that desperately needed it. There was an issue with sourcing the tiles by our set appointment time, And they were extremely flexible in working with when the tiles would arrive. I will hire them again when we redo that same bathroom’s floor.

Tiling of newly renovated bathroom in UWS, NYC. Edwin did a great job and was very detailed about each step. He carefully followed CAD drawings we gave him and even discussed improvements to the drawings that were helpful. The bathroom tile job had 12" x 24" porcelain tile, glass accents, 12" by 12" porcelain floor and 1" by 1" ceiling tile, and he laid out all expertly and with care. Highly recommended Affordable Precision Tile and Flooring.

Everyone at Affordable Precision Tile was extremely responsive, which was a great benefit during planning. Their prices were very fair and the work was high quality. The subway tile backsplash they installed in our kitchen turned out great. They tackled the problem area (an area with strange angles which required a lot of tile cutting) better than expected. We plan to use Affordable Precision Tile and Flooring again for other jobs we need.

Edwin and Elysha were a great team to work with. Edwin installed a ceramic tile backsplash in my kitchen. I received an estimate via Thumbtack within 1-2 hours. Edwin came out to my house to provide an onsite estimate on a SUNDAY. He helped negotiate some difficulties with the tile store. The work was done on time and the quality of the work was amazing. I will definitely use Affordable Precision Tile and Flooring for future tile work.

Stan was lovely, so kind and communicative! He and his colleague were able to complete the re-tiling of my bathroom floor in one day (including demo, prep, and laying the new tile). Unfortunately, many of the tiles were chipped in the process, which has slightly marred the finished look, but on the whole very happy.

Walter and his team completed our tile backsplash quickly and professionally. They really paid attention to details and did an excellent job matching the tile pattern at corners. They were on-time and cleaned up well. I highly recommend NV Restorations. I plan to use them again and again.

The task involved 3 bathrooms: removing existing hardware - towel bars, robe hooks, toilet paper dispensers, etc and replacing them and installing additional hardware, Repair/replace missing, loose or broken tile, painting drywall areas and realigning two bathroom doors. Bashkim Bogdani, principal of his Bogdani Corp did most of the tile related work himself as well as realigning the two doors perfectly. Drilling holes in tiles is very tricky: I don’t think he broke or chipped a single tile. He is a master craftsman who works efficiently and is very personable. One of his men did a great job painting and personally couldn’t have been nicer. At the end of each day they cleaned up minimizing the unavoidable construction presence. Excellent job.

I hired Tony for a fairly challenging stone tile cleaning and grouting project. He was very professional and efficient: - Provided a quote based on photos of the tiles/shower area so it didn't take multiple appointments to get the job done - Was able to schedule the work immediately - Estimated 4 hours to complete the project onsite but was able to finish faster - Offered a follow-up visit if any additional work was needed once the tile and grout was ready for use I just recommended Tony to my neighbor across the hall for similar work.

I did not have a good experience with Tyris Tile. Before hiring Tyris Tile, my kitchen was in mint condition. It had been thoughtfully designed and expertly built with care and attention to detail. I dedicated years to working on creating my perfect kitchen. Retiling the backsplash and floors was supposed to be the final touch. However, after 1 week of Tyris Tile, my kitchen was left in shambles and I was left with shoddy tiling and a laundry list of expensive things that now need to be fixed or redone. From the start, these contractors were so messy. I live in a studio apartment and none of my belongings were properly covered or protected. Everything was left covered in dust, debris and clumps of hardened glue. I asked a dozen times for things to be properly covered in plastic. What did I get? A garbage bag haphazardly taped to one small section of my slatted closet doors. Little to no effort was made to protect my cabinets or countertops. Cabinets were left chipped, dented and stained. My white countertops were also left stained with black Sharpie marker. My dishwasher no longer opens and closes properly. They sloppily grouted electrical wires in the wrong place. A piece from the bottom of my stove was ripped off. Water was left pooling on my wood floors. They left debris and garbage in my building for days despite assuring me and the building staff they would remove it. They were also rude to the front desk staff and porters. The tiling work itself is not great. The photos show tiles not glued properly, tiles not cut to size, tiles installed more than 1/2 inch off the wall, tiles left without any grout at all. Several of the floor tiles are uneven and both the floors and backsplash have spots with cracked and uneven grout. I reached out to Tyris Tile with my concerns and assumed they would come back to fix some of these issues since it’s technically a breach of contract to take my money but not finish the job. They never responded. Despite a lot of issues along the way they were nice, responsive, accommodating and professional. But at the end of the day, the quality of the work and the overall experience didn't match the cost or expectations. I wish this company luck and future success with their business and hope this helps ensure their next clients have a better experience.

Cirino was great to work with, punctual, professional, (usually) nice and most importantly great quality. He tiled an entryway with marble tiles, two bathrooms and kitchen backslash with porcelain tile, engineered wood flooring in living and dining area and rerouted a truly horrific job by another tiler (iguana services) to bring it to life. I give everything a 5 except the wood floor and regrout which are more 4.85 and 4.9, respectively (you know why Cirino 😉). The quality was great and it was a pleasure working with Cirino. Heven is not cheap, but it is clear from the results the price is worth it. Would recommend.

Jay is a very nice man and so is his assistant Al. He is hard working nice, reasonable rates and replies to my messages in a timely manner. The 1st pic on left is my dirty kitch floor tiles and the right side is the tiles after jay cleaned it. The grout is much cleaner and no longer dirty gray color. I'd hire Jay again.

Working with Cirino was a pleasure. I had an issue where I needed just one tile replaced in my shower niche. I called a number of companies but everyone was either outrageously expensive for the scope of work or had ideas that I didn’t like. Cirino worked with me to figure out what would work best to fix the tile. He even found a perfectly matching tile for me (I didn’t have extras). He was efficient and honest and gave me a very fair price. He got everything fixed in a timely fashion. He even went above and beyond and caulked a few other areas in other bathrooms in my apartment to avoid any water leak issues in the future. The work was executed very professionally. I highly recommend him. First two photos are of the broken tile. The third is of the great work to replace it (the flush finish looks better than before!)

Frank is a pro. We had antique tiling (from the 1920's) in the bathroom that needed major grouting work. He was super responsive and prompt when initially reviewing the project and providing an estimate. He was very clear and detailed in what he was going to do.He executed the job just as he said he would - he was thorough and clean. Most importantly, the shower looks beautiful. I highly recommend The Grout and Tile Experts of NYC.

Stan, the boss, is easy and straightforward to deal with, and his price is fair. Alexey, the workman he sent to do this tiling job, is skilled, pleasant, and a pleasure to work with. I will use them again. They are honest and professional.

I had a century old ceramic tiles in poor condition surrounding a fireplace that needed to be replaced, and I needed help. My google search lead me to Thumbtack, and subsequently to SkylineJR Maintenance. At the completion of the day long work, I could not be more pleased with the end result of the tile replacement project. I was left impressed with the skills of both the Jonathans (yes, 1 Jonathan plus another Jonathan). I’m very thankful for their high quality work, and for being lucky with my selection for the right person for the job.

I am mostly satisfied but after we cleaned the tiles after completion of the job, we noticed cracks and missing grout that needed to be addressed. However, when I sent the photos to Daniel Masonry LLC and requested the team to come back, they were unresponsive.

This is an initial review, Julio, came out to look at my tile work and gave me an fair estimate that we both could agree on. He was very kind, and non pushy. He communicated very well and made me feel at ease and that's why I hired him for my bathroom tile job. I'm posting before pictures so this can be an honest review so the customers can see the before and after. The pictures are what Julio came to see, a hot mess. But he said no problem he can make it all better for me:) at the end of this week I will post the pictures of his work. Mjones
