We celebrated our 31 wedding anniversary by having Chef Tony prepare our dinner. Our celebration took place on April 30, 2014, the day it rained cats, dogs and cows! Chef Tony was on time regardless of the severe weather issues. He prepared an exemplary five course meal, with each course accompanied with a great wine. It was like having "Food Network" with the most personable Chef in your home live! What a great memorable experience, which we plan to repeat with Chef Tony again!

We hired Sodiah Thomas and her crew to cater our wedding this past summer, and they truly surpassed our expectations with respect to food quality, duties performed, and overall value. From the start, Sodiah was easy to work with. She responded to my Thumbtack request promptly with a generous offering that was within our budget. Over the following weeks, Sodiah was always in contact as we finalized our tasting menu and as soon we tasted the appetizers, we were sold. We wanted our wedding dinner to reflect not only our personalities but also the joining of our cultures (Asian-American and American), and Sodiah and the talented Chef Tristan made this happen with their eagerness and food creativity. On our wedding day, the dishes tasted just as good or even better than during our tasting, which is always a concern with scale-up. Our guests thought the food was delicious! And the best part… when the evening was over, I turned around, and Sodiah and her crew had already cleaned everything (without me having to ask), packed everything, and left us with little to do but to enjoy the rest of the evening! I’m a big fan of people who are passionate about what they do, who work hard and exceed expectations. S&B Catering did just that, and hiring them was one of the best decisions we made for our wedding. Thank you, Sodiah, Tristan, and the rest of the S&B family!

We have had Carlos cook for us several times and have always been left in awe. His approach is unlike many chefs since it isn't just about the dish, but the overall experience. His farm-to-table initiative only makes his food his. He is very creative, spontaneous, and down to earth. I look forward to having him cook for us again!

Wild Blue Creative Catering has done multiple events for our organization over the past few years -- from exclusive executive dining to a 500 person summer employee BBQ. Their menus and food are excellent -- the executive chef takes great pride in utilizing the best food sources available. In addition, their staff is very professional and great to work with. We look forward to our next Wild Blue Creative Catering event.

I want to start off by saying thank you to the chef and his wonderful team for everything they prepared for me and my husbands housewarming party! The chef was very reasonable with pricing and when it came to service him and his team went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect for our night. The food was out of this world our guest couldn’t stop talking about how amazing and delicious everything was. The hit of the night was the BLT sandwiches with their special sauce and the spicy deviled eggs. The Chef was very attentive and made sure he was able to give us everything we wanted the way we wanted it. How many people can Honestly say their caterer answered their call at 11pm?? I mean he really made sure he was available 24/7 ! We were able to actually relax and enjoy our party instead of worrying about guest and food and etc. The feeling was absolutely indescribable. The chefs passion and drive was visible and made our night much more perfect! I look forward to hiring him and his team for future events!

I had Vanessa cater my 4th of July party last year. The theme was "Republican". I'm a vegetarian and we had several guests with dietary restrictions. Vanessa created a menu with some great passed hors dourves during the main party (I still have people ask about the grilled shrimp w bourbon sauce) and a late night menu for sobering up. Sausage and peppers & an awesome farro and mushroom pie. She gave lots of options for our price point and gave some great suggestions to keep the party on theme. Best part- I didn't have to cook and the kitchen wasn't a mess in the morning.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

      • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
      • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
      • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
      • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
      • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
