Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

These guys did an amazing job! I heard so many horror stories about getting ripped off and about what I should expect when getting roof replaced. I'm here to tell you my experience was nothing like what I had been told. I was referred to Dana Gregory by my mom and true to her word they delivered. Rowley Roofing & Construction had my roof installed start to finish in 3 days. During he process Dana Gregory walked me brought what I should expect when dealing with my depreciation. Not only did he answer all my questions, Rowley Roofing & Construction actually submitted everything needed so I could collect my depreciation. They took a situation which I was stressed about and turned it into a positive experience. The roof looks great, everything is clean and you can't tell anyone was here, but best of all I ended up with some extra money coming my way! Who would've thought? A few days ago I was dreading how much I would have to pay and now I'm expecting a check for a little over 500.00. I suggest if you are looking for someone who is relatable, knows the business, has great work ethic and just over all is a great guy, then you need to go with Rowley Roofing & Construction and ask for Dana to help you.

He is very professional and I will recommend to any anyone that need work on the roof. He did good inspection and gave me a honest feedback saying my roof is not damaged and the leaks I was worried about were because of high winds. He gave me few tips on to monitor the spots where I spotted minor leaks. He asked me to give him a call in case if i notice more leaks.

We used CARSA construction for our home repairs, and they were GREAT! We had damage to our roof and needed it replaced. CJ came out and looked at the roof and gave me a prompt estimate, his prices were very fair. We had 5 other roofing companies also give estimates. We chose to go with CARSA, and we are so glad we did. He met with our insurance adjuster and I, he also provided me with all of the materials, choices, colors and prices to make the decisions that I needed to make. CJ answered all of my questions whenever I had any, and I had lots, as this was the first time we have ever had to do this. He was always available by phone, text or email, and always responded promptly. They replaced our roof, we changed from wind turbines to ridge vents, and he explained it all to me to help me decide. They replaced our gutters and added gutter covers to the back where we had trees. Repaired the fence, power washed and stained it. The roof was finished in two days and looks great, the seamless gutters and covers were done the next day. The fence was damaged in a storm the night before they were to power wash it, so they ended up repairing it for us first, then washing and staining it, another two days. So all work took a total of five days, with a couple bad weather days and weekend in between. It all looks AMAZING and we couldn’t be happier! We will definitely use this company again and recommend them to all we know that may need work done. From start to finish CJ kept me informed, was very professional, helped me deal with the insurance, and all of his workers were very nice, efficient, polite and helpful. We couldn’t ask for a better experience, we wish all companies were like this one, it would make life so much easier. Thank you CARSA and CJ it was a pleasure working with you.

OMG!!!!!! Dawson and his team are trustworthy, reliable, professional, and best of all, KNOWLEDGEABLE. They helped us with ever aspect of our hail claim, from working directly we with our insurance company, to identify and managing all of the ancillary subcontractors for gutters, windows, HVAC, etc. They are honest, require no money up front, and clearly communicate cost and process. We have used their services twice now for hail related claims (2016 and 2021), and will continue to rely on them for any future roofing and storm related claims / needs. Do yourself a favor and use these guys they are simply AWESOME!!!!! Thanks guys
