Your burning questions: answered

How much does computer repair cost?

The cost to fix your computer or laptop will depend on the extent of the repair and the labor rates in your area. For example, a repair service may charge $100 to fix virus or malware issues or $320 to fix a cracked or damaged screen. On average, computer repair technicians charge $60/hour for their services. However, hourly rates can range from $45-$90

To find out exactly how much it will cost to fix your desktop, laptop, Apple or PC computer, request cost estimates from computer repair specialists near you.

How much does computer repair cost per hour?

It costs an average of $60 per hour for computer repair. Hourly rates range from $45-$50 on the low end and $85-$90 on the high end.

Get free cost estimates from computer repair specialists near you so you’ll know exactly how much you should expect to pay.

Who can fix my computer?

If your computer needs repairs, hire a technician who has experience with your computer’s model and brand. Ideally, the pro you choose should have certifications, training and/or a degree in a related field.

Look for top-rated, qualified computer repair services in your area on Thumbtack.

Is it worth replacing the motherboard on a laptop?

If your laptop’s motherboard was damaged by physical impact, liquid, heat or electrical damage, you may need to replace it or buy a new computer. You should consult computer repair experts near you to determine if replacing your laptop’s motherboard is worth the cost. Compare the price quotes you receive with new laptop prices, and decide which option is the most cost-effective.

What should I do before sending a computer in for repairs?

Before you send your computer to a technician to fix it, take the following precautions:

  • Make sure you hire a reputable, top-rated professional to handle the repairs. Look at past photos of work they’ve completed and read their customer reviews on Thumbtack.
  • Back-up your data. To ensure you don’t lose the data on your computer, back-up your files to an external hard drive.
  • Ensure you have access to important information. If you need to access certain files or information from your computer, make sure you can access that information through a cloud storage system or external drive.
  • Erase sensitive information. If you have files (documents, photos, etc.) that contain sensitive information about your finances, accounts, passwords, etc., delete them before you bring your computer to a repair shop.
  • Log out of your accounts. Make sure you’re logged out of your bank, social media and other accounts.

Is it cheaper to replace a hard drive or buy a new computer?

Buying a new hard drive is almost always cheaper than buying a new computer. If you suspect you need to upgrade or replace your hard drive, ask a computer technician to diagnose your device (and request a cost estimate if the culprit is indeed the hard drive).

How many years does a laptop last?

Depending on its quality, age, condition and maintenance, a laptop may last only a few years or up to seven years. Of course, your laptop may last longer or shorter depending on how well you take care of it. If you think your laptop needs repairs, don’t procrastinate — hire a technician to look at it before the damage becomes irreparable.

Is it worth fixing a computer?

It depends. If the damage is severe, you might be better off buying a new computer than spending hundreds (or thousands) of dollars on repairs. Always get price quotes from a few computer repair services near you, and compare those estimates to desktop and laptop prices. If it's cheaper to fix your computer,  consider doing so. But if it's cheaper to buy a new device, that's probably your best option.

Should I repair or replace my computer?

To determine if you should replace or repair your computer, consider the following:

  • Has your warranty expired?
  • Is your computer old and out of date?
  • Is the cost to fix your computer 50% or more of the cost of replacing it?
  • Before it broke, was your computer working slowly and inefficiently?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s probably time to replace your computer. When in doubt, consult a technician for their expert opinion.

I enlisted the help of GTT Services because the bottom of my computer was cracked and the hinges were making the screen break. I also had two keys on my keyboard that were broken. Abid purchased a new undercarriage for my computer and a new keyboard to repair it. The entire process took about a week. All in all it was a pretty pleasant experience. Abid Khan was nice and courteous and kept me up to date with the process via Thumbtack. Admittedly, it was a rather expensive repair ($300), but as I am not versed in computer repair knowledge its hard to determine if this was super expensive or average in terms of pricing. Despite that my computer works great and it was a great experience for my first time using this site.

Abid took extra time to ensure the repair on my MacBook Pro was done correctly. The replacement part ended up having problems, to which a new part was ordered immediately and fixed quickly once it had shipped. I would highly recommend GTT Services to anyone considering repairs on Apple computers.

Todd was knowledgeable and was able to diagnose the problem. Final resolution is waiting on whether the contractor who actually bought the computer can find the receipt, which is required before the manufacturer will provide a disc for reinstalling the boot-up program. Then we will be able to complete the repair.

I was extremely fortunate to have chosen Akeel. His quote was most reasonable for the fixes I needed. He was also very friendly, prompt and generous with his time and expertise. In fact he went beyond what was needed by ensuring my computer ran more efficiently and securely. He gave me his laptop while my laptop under repair. One cannot do better than all of that. I am thankful.

I thought my pc laptop was ruined, but Abid was very knowledgable, honest, encouraging when I described what had happened. His evaluation and diagnosis was quick and his charge for restoring it was very reasonable. He not only restored my laptop to original condition, he made it even better than before! It truly is BRAND NEW to me! Thank you Abid! I plan to recommend GTT Services to anyone I know who needs computer repair!

My 2011 MacBook Pro which had worked completely fine since I had purchased it in 2011 suddenly refused to properly turn on. The power would go on but the screen remained blank and the keyboard would not light up. Intermittently the screen would come on extremely grainy for a brief time then blank. I had valuable data on my computer that I must save so I took the unit to the genius bar at apple and they diagnosed the probable issue as a failed logic board and stated that apple doesn't repair units this old and suggested trying to copy the data off the hard drive myself or send the unit out for data recovery. After some research I came upon Mr. Khan with GTT services on Thumbtack. I emailed him my problem and he promptly texted me within a few hours. From my description he felt it most likely was my hard drive failed and offered to do a free diagnostic to verify and an estimate for data recovery. I made an appointment that was convenient for us both within a few days of contact. I dropped the unit with him and he spent a good 20 minutes going over the potential problems and what he might be able to do to help. He reached out to me shortly with a definitive diagnosis of a failed hard drive and his estimate to replace it with an SSD with the most appropriate operating system version for this model Macbook Pro and an estimate for data recovery. I found his prices to be equivalent to the company that apple suggested for data recovery. Since Mr. Khan was local and he gained my trust from my interaction i asked him to proceed with repairs and data recovery. He was able to salvage all my data within the estimated time he gave me and my MacBook was running beautifully. I am impressed with Mr. Khan and his services. I would most definitely use him in the future should i need. He is up front and I was extremely satisfied.
