Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

How can I find out if a roofer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a roofer is an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by visiting your state or city’s government website. Local governments are providing up-to-date information for residents during this time.

A national guideline is available on CISA’s website, Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page addresses 16 different categories of essential infrastructure sectors, but note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

I worked with Sebastian with 180 Roofing and Contracting for my roof and he was so helpful, professional and timely. He explained all the options to me and offered suggestions. I love my roof (I changed shingle colors based on his recommendation and it looks fantastic!). They replaced my roof within a week and new exterior paint after finalizing everything & they kept the workspace clean and organized. I am very pleased and would definitely recommend them.

My satellite dish got knocked down and punctured a hole through my roof. Due to the rain there was quite a bit of water damage. Johnny did an amazing job repairing the damage. It’s like nothing happened on my roof. Johnny was very responsive and answered all my questions throughout the process. I will hire him again if I have any roofing needs in the future.

Manuel was highly responsive to my leaking roof issue. Came out to house, properly installed a tarp on my roof while we were in good rainy days recently. Once the rain let up enough to allow him to repair the leak, he did so flawlessly.

My husband and I moved into a new house recently and the exhaust from the microwave/range didn’t have a roof exit so it blew straight into the attic. The New Elite Roof team was quick to respond to my request, come out and give a quote and provide the service! Thank you!

I cannot say more about how professional and courteous Ivan was. He responded to my request for an estimate within minutes on a Saturday afternoon and was here on Monday morning. He took a look at the repair that was needed and fixed it on the spot. I was very impressed with the quality he provided as well as his honesty in assessing the repair. When it’s time for my roof to be replaced, New Elite Roof will be the first company that I contact.

I had a small leak on my roof and Darrell came the same day to inspect it and fix it. He was very professional and took the time to explain the problem and how he fixed it. I haven't had a problem since. Two weeks later he checked back with me to make sure everything was fine. I highly recommend him.

They responded quickly and professionally to my ad. They listened to the issue / concerns we had and made an appt to come look at the issue. They were professional and thorough in their estimate. They were also able to provide a quote on a non-critical repair in the process. After reviewing all bids, I am very happy with the price and quality of the work they did on both jobs! I have saved their card - this is Texas, my roof repairs are not over!

Amazing stuff with ICON. Responded right away, spoke with him and got the feeling that he really knew his field well. He was able to tell me what was wrong with my leaky roof based on my description and told me he would send one of his guys the next day. The worker came out on time and did a great job, I couldn't meet him there to pay him because I had a child that morning so I sent a friend and they told me it was on the house because of the new child. These people value their customers and do a great job - what more could you want. Definitely recommend them and would use them again in the future.

I compared offers from a total of 7 roofing companies. James DeLaGarza at A-1 was one of two who seemed primarily interested in fixing everything I needed done. Most others seems geared towards squeezing every possible cent out of the insurance company for themselves. The work itself was first rate. I really appreciated their policy of waiting for enough dry weather to actually finish... (especially when watching the exposed wood-composite of two of my neighbors get rained upon because their contractor was apparently more interested in schedules than the home they were working on). Sometimes James was difficult to get on the phone but he always, without fail, communicated via email, text or callback within 2-12 hours, sometimes quicker. The crew showed up timely, did great work and they were done on schedule. They were all very friendly and courteous and respectful of us and our property. A-1 also timely delivered all the paperwork I needed for the insurance. 5 Stars Plus! Thanks for a job well done!
