Mr. Duong came at a time that worked for both of us. Brought everything needed to fix our leak even gave me the extra parts and receipt from Home Depot to return for the credit. Was quick and clean. Wouldn't hesitate to have him come back to fix another plumbing problem.

This was a great experience. Chandler arrived on time and quickly and professionally resolved the three plumbing issues I had. He even resolved a problem that a plumber from another company had overlooked without charge! The work was completed in a very professional way, on time and at a fair price. I would call Expert Plumbing again in a heartbeat.

I needed someone to flush out my tankless water heater and asked if they could show me how to do it so I didn't have to pay someone to do it every year. Ashley at City Creek Plumbing responded right away and let me know I was missing the valves to do the flush. He quoted me a very fair price to add the valves, flush the tank, and show me how to do it. The night before my appointment, I just happen to have a plumbing leak in my basement. Major bummer, but timing couldn't have been better. I was able to turn the water off to the leak, so it wasn't an emergency, but I also didn't want to message Ashley about it because it was found so late. The next day Ashley let me know he was on his way (which is very much appreciated) and was very punctual as well as professional. He was very personable and walked me through and explained the flushing of the tank. I brought up the leak in my basement and he was more than willing to help out with it. Turned out the water pressure to my house was almost double what it was suppose to be. He ended up changing out the regulator and explained how that worked as well. Very pleased with the service I got and will definitely call him again.

Brock was absolutely above and beyond our expectations. We had many small jobs to be done ranging from plumbing, major woodwork repair, cleaning items and maintenance plus a problem job which he came up with an idea to fix it. He was always letting us know what he was doing, He was prompt, he was friendly and professional. He completed our jobs and some extra things in a timely manner. We will go with Cranston again because of Brock. A mention to Jack. Jack was friendly and professional. His responses were what made us chose Cranston. Thanks to Brock for his positive and hardworking attitude. We will call you again. Soon. Luana Chilelli

I needed a couple different things that needed fixing due to me owning an older home. My last plumbing experience was a nightmare so I decided to call around and get bids from about 6 different plumbers. While getting all my bids (some I even had to pay for) every plumber I met up with was high priced and didn't take their time to look and talk to me about the problem. It was almost like they didn't have time for me. Then I met spencer with a perfect plumber. He responded right away, explained the problem and the solution, all my different options and gave me his time. I decided to go with him and it went wonderful! He's very professional. I will never go anywhere else. I refer him to all of my friends and they think the same. Plumbing problems are never good but it's definitely been a piece of mind knowing I have a great reliable plumber I can call who is willing to help and come at any time. I can't say enough good things!

Our water heater went out and thumbtack referred us to Murray Plumbing, and he called us right away. We told him the situation and he gave us his best quote over the phone. We contacted same day and Home Depot and their bids were hundreds of dollars more, so we went with Murray. We had already been without hot water for 2 days, and Matt went out of his way to work late and came the same day. We found him to be pleasant, helpful, honest and fair. He did a great job. I would definitely use him again, and recommend him to friends and family.

I hired Henrie Plumbing for my remodels and to fix multiple rental units two years ago and still have Keith of Henrie Plumbing doing all my plumbing . Keith (Henrie Plumbing ) has always made himself available to fix all the emergencies that have arisen. He has always done quality work as well as doing everything to current plumbing codes. Keith is very knowledgeable in all of plumbing applications that I have asked him to do. When Keith says he will be on a job he has always been on time which. This is something I have not experienced with some other plumbing companies. So if you're looking for someone to do plumbing for you I highly recommend Henrie Plumbing.

When we hired Jason at Building Pros, we only intended him to complete some drywall repairs we needed done in a rental unit. However, as additional needs arose, we soon discovered Jason to be skilled in many different areas and had him complete not only the drywall repair, but door frame replacement, baseboard removal and installation, window repair, hvac assessment, plumbing repairs and several other miscellaneous jobs we needed done. Jason and his team have been incredibly efficient and professional and we look forward to maintaining a long term working relationship with Building Pros.

Steve helped us with a couple of small fixes/projects. The first time he came to the house I was out of town and my wife was dealing with a fussy baby. We asked him to come back and he happily did. Charged us for 3 hours of work in total, and he probably spent more time than that. He couldn’t fix a plumbing issue we are having but was honest about it and didn’t try charging us for work he couldn’t do. We will use him Steve again.

Mark was awesome! He is very knowledgeable, walked me through what he was doing, fixed another plumbing issue for me, and the cost was also very reasonable and fair. I'm so happy to have found a reliable, skilled, and trustworthy plumber for the future. Being a homeowner I'm sure I will need his services again and this time I'm so glad to know who I will be reaching out to again when needed. I will be recommending him to my friends, family, and other homeowners. Thank you so much Mark!!!

Vinny’s was awesome to work with! On time, honest, efficient, inexpensive, just great to work with. He had our whole basement done in 2 days. I would hire him and recommend him to all the people I know, it’s so hard to find a reliable plumber at a decent price!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
