Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a HVAC technician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a safe consultation or appointment with an HVAC technician during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by comparing technicians in your area in an online search. Message or call technicians to ask whether they can perform a consultation over the phone or even over a video call. This way, they can assess the problem without increasing the risk of virus transmission by visiting your house.

If it turns out the service is essential, you’ll need to follow CDC guidelines as well as local government guidelines to ensure everyone’s safety.

How can I find out if an HVAC technician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Currently, governments on both the federal and local levels are updating guidelines on what qualifies as an essential service. To see whether an HVAC technician is considered an essential service during the COVID-19 pandemic, check your city or state’s government website.

For federal guidelines, check CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which identifies 16 critical infrastructure sectors during the crisis. But note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an HVAC technician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a technician for an HVAC repair or installation project, practice current social distancing guidelines. This may require remaining outside while the technician works or ensuring the technician can work in a sectioned-off area or outbuilding.

Comply with social distancing guidelines while the technician is performing work. Do not make physical contact with technicians, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, sanitize all involved spaces and surface and pay using a digital platform instead of cash or a check.

Can I use digital payments to pay for central air conditioning services?

The use of digital payment platforms -- like Google Pay, PayPal, Zelle, Venmo and Square Cash -- is common among air conditioning technicians. Currently, the COVID-19 pandemic is improving the adoption of these platforms as a means of helping social distancing.

As you compare local air conditioning technicians online, contact them to see if they’ll accept digital payments. Also, discuss strategies for completing the job while complying with safety guidelines for reducing the risk of exposure.

Can I install central air myself?

While you may be able to do some preparation work for central air installation, you should hire a licensed contractor to complete the project and handle the air conditioning refrigerants.

Also, unless you have the proper credentials, you risk making common mistakes when installing central air. This may include installing the wrong-size furnace, improperly installing ductwork and exhaust systems, and incorrectly managing drainage.

To ensure your central air is installed correctly, contact the best HVAC pros near you and start getting free estimates today.

Is it worth it to install central air?

Depending on where you live, it might be worth it to install central air. Central air makes your house comfortable on hot summer days. And although it’s hard to predict if adding central air will increase your home’s value, prospective homebuyers will certainly notice if it’s missing.

Another advantage of central air is that it can help dehumidify your home. Not only will it make your home more comfortable and enjoyable, but it can also  help prevent mold from growing or spreading.

Contact the best HVAC contractors near you to learn more about the central air installation process and to start receiving free estimates.

Does central air add value to a home?

A central air unit or HVAC system may add value to your home. Or, if you’re in the process of selling your home, it may help you close a sale.

The Remodeling Impact report found that 20% of realtors have suggested that home sellers replace their HVAC before attempting to sell their homes, and 7% said this project did help close a sale.

Talk with an expert to figure out if adding an HVAC system is a good idea for your home. And contact the best HVAC pros near you to get free estimates so you’ll know how much this project will cost you.

Does an HVAC technician need to enter my home?

Because most HVAC systems are located in the home, it’s likely that an HVAC technician would need to enter yours when working on the projects. However, there might be exceptions. Some HVAC systems are located in garages or in areas of the house that are sectioned off. During the consultation, ask your technician if they'll need to enter your home.

When you contact local technicians, ask if they’ll perform a video call in place of a traditional consultation. Be sure to send all materials like photos and documents digitally, and comply with all relevant guidelines.

Do HVAC technicians offer remote or virtual services?

Because HVAC technicians need to be physically present to do their work, they have not conventionally offered remote or virtual services. However, with the importance of social distancing due to COVID-19, the need for remote capabilities is greater than ever. If you come across a profile that states the HVAC technician or AC professional is offering remote services, message the pro to find out what those services include.

Consult with your technician to see if the technician will be able to perform a video call consultation. You can find local technicians near you by searching online.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

Maurico is great at his job and incredibly knowledgable about HVAC systems. He has been able to do routine maintenance and was able to replace my system previously. He has done HVAC work and other odd jobs around the house as a handyman. He is incredibly reliable, quick to answer, and professional especially on days when I needed someone to look at my HVAC that same day. I have been using Maurico's services for years. He is reasonably priced and is honest because he does care about his customers. Would recommend him to friends.

Herb was a pleasure to work with and I feel like I learned a lot about how to better make my HVAC unit and make my home more comfortable through the changing seasons. He was honest about what work was required and did not do any unnecessary work that other HVAC technicians could have charged me for. And to top it all off, he was a very nice guy and a pleasure to talk with - I will definitely be calling him for all of my maintenance and service needs!!

I have worked with several HVAC companies in the past several years and MVM Home Services is "by far the best." Mauricio is punctual, actually got to my house "early." His work quality cleaning the coils of my outside A/C and heat pump units was outstanding. I watched the entire process and saw his care and detail while performing this job. Also, I experienced considerable savings by using Mauricio instead of the larger company who has performed my services for the past 5 years. MVM will be our new "go to" company for HVAC services.

Mauricio was very responsive from the get go. I talked to many HVAC companies and all of them said they could not fix the problem and only gave me estimates for replacing the entire unit. He was able to fix the problem without replacing the unit and did it within a few days. Highly recommended!

I had Sergio fix an HVAC system in a rental property and do a yearly tune-up service in my primary home. Sergio is very honest and explains exactly what he is doing and why. I would have given him 5 stars but he is sometimes difficult to pin down on dates / times. That being said -- cost effective and honest make it worth a few extra calls &/or texts.

Alex and his team from Gomez AC Contractor were amazing. I had to have my HVAC system replaced as it was 20+ years old and malfunctioning. Alex was extremely responsive and willing to discuss the project with me in depth, even offering some alternatives to a full replacement as I had just been laid off due to covid and cost was concerning. However, because his pricing was so reasonable, I went ahead with a full replacement. The team of 4 arrived on time and got right down to business. My system is in a condo and therefore a little more complicated requiring drywall cutting but they did it with ease. The entire project took approximately 4.5 hours which was amazing! They even cleaned up after themselves thoroughly! The men were all extremely professional and Alex even showed me a few things about the system before he left to make sure I had full understanding. Parts have a 10 year warranty and Gomez AC offers a 2 year labor warranty as well. I would use them again in a heart beat and plan on telling everyone I know about them as well!! Thank you Gomez AC!!

I am so glad I contacted Julian through Thumb Tack! My regular HVAC guy didn’t think much of my complaint that a vent in my master bedroom was no longer putting out any air. He just kept telling me the duct system in my house was badly designed. I had never used thumb tack before but a search for duct work brought up Nero Heating and Cooling and a reviewer described how Julian had helped with the same complaint. So I knew it wasn’t too small a job for him. Then I was worried that he might not service my area, the Mount Vernon section of Fairfax County south of Old Town, Alexandria. But he does. In fact, Julian texted me within the Thumb Tack app minutes after my online request and was at my house about 45 minutes later! I was worried that if he was really good he should have been busier in the middle of this heat wave and then he told me he had already done three other calls today and it was just noon. He carefully took the duct apart and found the problem. He had to play around with it a bit but he kept running upstairs to the problem vent which he put a thermometer on and waited until the temperature of the vent went down from 80 degrees to 69 so he knew what he did had been effective. On top of that he said it was hard to price that kind of work so he asked what I thought it was worth. I told him a million dollars in this heat but if I wrote a check for that it would bounce. We agreed on a payment amount and he accepts checks, credit cards, Zelle, Venmo, etc. I am so happy I called him. He was very quick, professional and most importantly, effective!
