I have used Alvin Smithson's services for over five years as a piano tuner, teacher and performer. I am always impressed with his skills, artistry and professionalism. Alvin first came to tune my 100-years old Steinway after it had been neglected for a number of years. He first examined the instrument, diagnosed what needed to be done and then proceeded with his expert tuning. Immediately after he was done and started playing, I was amazed at how good the piano sounded. Alvin explained that with a piano that hasn't been tuned or played in so many years, it will take some time to achieve its best form and sound for which it was built. A short time after, my wife started taking piano lessons from Alvin and as she started gaining proficiency in playing under his guidance, the piano itself gained a rich pleasing sound. Alvin paid close attention and adjusted notes or did a full tuning whenever needed. He also took the time to clean the strings and do minor technical adjustments. When a string needed to be replaced, Alvin recommended a technician from a highly reputable company. Overall, we owe it to his expertise to have the wonderful old piano do what it was built for by the Steinway masters. I should also mention that I heard some great musicians at venues where Alvin is the regular piano tuner. People who visit our house and hear our piano, or play it themselves, always compliment its sound. But the best comes when Alvin himself sits at the keyboard, whether at our house, at a social function or performing in the theater, it's such a joy to hear him play some great classical pieces as well as his own wonderful compositions. He is truly a very talented, sensitive and highly knowledgeable artist. And such a pleasant person, too. My wife and I feel fortunate to have Alvin give us the best piano sound to enjoy live music in our home. I would recommend him to anyone as piano tuner, teacher and overall musician.

I only took a handful of lessons with Gregg, but I have no complaints with my experience. Gregg is a consummate professional, and clearly very knowledgeable. I came into lessons with a couple years of playing experience, and I was still able to learn some very helpful things in my short time taking lessons with Gregg. I also really appreciated that he had instruments and equipment available in his studio. Lastly, he offered me a favorable rate for signing up via Thumbtack, which I also appreciated. I ultimately went in a different direction, as Gregg mentioned that he might not have the capacity to teach me certain songs from beginning to end. As this is one of my primary learning goals, I switched instructors. Even still, I give credit to Gregg for being upfront and honest with me. Overall, he's a good guy and teacher, and I wouldn't rule out returning to him at some point in the future.

I have been taking lessons from Sam for about two months now. I am an adult who is coming to vocal training with little experience in singing other than some high school chorus and performances. And I am so glad I did! Sam was immediately welcoming, encouraging, and warm. He is clearly a wonderful person and it shows right away. But maybe more importantly, he is an extremely talented singer, performer and instructor. I really wanted an experienced and sophisticated teacher who will not just encourage me but teach me, push me, and help me to advance and become an accomplished performer. Sam has a great reputation and teaches many advanced, even famous singers but he is also great for beginners. He teaches you not just singing technique but how to develop as a musician both technically and emotionally. Before starting with Sam, I took a few lessons with others who start you off the bat with sheet music and just singing. That doesn't work in my view. Singing is difficult (more difficult than I expected actually) and to progress you have to understand theory, rhythm, timing and phrasing. Sam starts you with these kinds of lessons so that when you start singing you understand the music itself, not just technique. In short, you won't find a better teacher or person than Sam so if you are interested in progressing either as a beginner or an experienced singer, please check him out. You won't be disappointed.

Mr. Bennett and his wife led a 2-hour class for a group of 12 people at our office. They provided all the equipment and worked in our office parking deck. The class was excellent - everyone enjoyed it and learned valuable lessons. I highly recommend him for any personal safety or self-defense classes you want to offer to a group.

I am both shocked(!) and incredibly happy with how my voice has improved since I started voice lessons with Barbara just a matter of months ago. Tone, range, everything. She is truly an amazing teacher and a lovely person. And as a bonus, you will never have as much fun at a music lesson as you will with Barbara! Very, very highly recommended!

Voice lessons with Rachel Leanza have been a great pleasure. She is awesome at working out a schedule for lessons and making sure you're comfortable during them. You get what you give in effort, but she is always there to help and answer any questions. When you do start to experience progress in your voice, Rachel is just as enthusiastic as you are, which makes the lessons quite fun. If you're looking to learn about singing and enjoy yourself while doing it, then these lessons are definitely worth it.

Mr. Bastani is very sharp musically. He takes his time to make sure a student understands the material. I was very pleased with my 1st meeting with him. We went through a lot of information and I never felt as though I was being rushed in any manner. He is organized and flexible with his time. I look forward to having future lessons with him. Kolade

I interviewed pretty much every music teacher in Alexandria before deciding to go with Mark. There are two types of music teachers I've found - amateur musicians who play guitar in their own band and think they can teach any musical instrument, and professional music teachers who don't have a lot of musical authority. Mark is a musical authority - a professional musician, with solid credentials, and he's an excellent teacher. I really feel like I'm training from a master and not just from an old-fashioned teacher who's stepping me through an instruction routine. He's been able to bring me up to speed on piano very quickly with no pressure. He explains musical techniques and concepts so that they're clearly understood and easy to learn.

Ienura -- or "Z," as she prefers to be called (we use "Miss Z," because we're like that) -- has been wonderful with my 9-year-old daughter. There is laughing and cheerleading and learning happening throughout the lesson, which is so much more effective than the scales and metronomes of my youth. After only a few lessons, my daughter has memorized pieces and is starting to recognize notes on a page! Hats off to Miss Z! Oh wait ... Did I leave out the best part? She comes to you! No need to drive to yet another after-school activity; she delivers! Case closed. Hire this woman!

Lindsey is very professional - shows up on time, plans in advance, and advises on how to practice between sessions. She challenges me and helps me reach my potential, as far as I'm comfortable. I always feel great at the end of our yoga sessions, and she has such a friendly personality - I can always count on "Yoga with Lindsey" to start my mornings right!
