Alvin Smithson is a fine musician who did a great job tuning my old piano. He is personable and professional. Excellent communicator, arrived on time. I would definitely have him tune my piano again, and I hope we can do something musically together!

Stevie is great!! I have been wanting to learn how to play the guitar for a while now and Stevie was very patience when he came out to the house, and he explains everything. He worked around my hours and wasn't watching the clock to see when the hour was up. He gives off a great vibe and I'm looking forward to continuing my lessons with Stevie. He makes it very interesting and exciting!

Aida studio's is one of the most professional violin studio's in the DC area. Tona, is one of the most inspiring people I have had the privilege to know and brings a tremendous amount of energy and technical skill to her lessons. As an adult learner, she has helped me set goals and provided structure to lessons to channel my creative energy. I would recommend her and Aida Studio's to anyone I know.

Gregg is an excellent guitar instructor, who excels at providing guitar lessons catered to your preference and in a way that will allow continued growth. He effectively explains the lesson and works to ensure that you have a substantial enough understanding to enhance your abilities at home. As with anything, your improvement depends on the time you put in outside of the classroom, but Gregg will ensure that his time with you gives you the understanding, as well as insider tips, on how to improve your guitar playing, and in a way that will allow you to continue to grow the most effectively and avoid hitting a ceiling, from holding the guitar properly, to understanding chord progressions.

Mr. Bennett and his wife led a 2-hour class for a group of 12 people at our office. They provided all the equipment and worked in our office parking deck. The class was excellent - everyone enjoyed it and learned valuable lessons. I highly recommend him for any personal safety or self-defense classes you want to offer to a group.

I have been a guitar player for a long time, but have always missed out on two of the most important components of musicianship; playing with other people, and instruction. Jam class takes care of both. By attending Jam Class, I am afforded the opportunity to regularly hone my guitar and vocal skills in a group setting. Having Dan present during the jam offers immediate feedback on what sounded good, and what needs improvement. Jam Class also helps drive some of the topics discussed my private lessons, keeping the instruction applicable and interesting. For me, Jam Class is everything I've ever wanted musically; a growing confidence in my own stage presence, the shared experience of playing live music with like minded people, and the growth of my harmonic vocabulary.

My two teenage daughters and I trained with David, our instructor, with Falcon Security. It was the best decision we have ever made! Not only did we learn skills to protect ourselves, but we now feel empowered! I know my daughters will be more careful and ready at a momemt's notice to defend and protect themselves, heaven forbid should they need to! As for myself, I have a true confidence that should I find myself in an unsafe situation, I can handle it without a shadow of a doubt. David was spot on with his lessons. He conveyed what can happen to any of us but did so in a professional way. I know he really cared about our well-being and he took our lessons to heart every session. He pointed out scenarios that the girls have never yet contemplated and then gave them the skills to handle what ever can happen. At 17 and 18 it was time for them to learn self defense. David was awesome and I couldn't be happier with the results!

I went to Brian for self-defense lessons. I had no previous experience, but I never felt talked down to or uncomfortable with Brian. His techniques were very practical and real-life applicable, as well as quick to pick up. Brian gave lots of instruction to make sure I understood everything and made the learning process easy. After just a few weeks I already began to feel very capable of defending myself in a wide variety of situations due to Brian's training. I highly recommend Brain, and would definitely go back to him.

I decided to learn how to play piano for the first time at age 24 and Sally has been an excellent first teacher. There are several things that I think she has done well, but I think the most important thing has been that she has helped to foster and inspire my enjoyment of playing piano. Sally obviously loves playing the piano herself and that has definitely passed onto me during our lessons. I started playing piano on a whim several months ago and I'm even more excited now about learning and practicing than I was when I started and I think that speaks a lot to how good Sally has been as a teacher. The other aspect I've really appreciated is that Sally has been very responsive and aware of my goals and has challenged me in exactly the right ways. I feel like I've learned far more than I ever expected to in my first 5 months of playing. There were several times Sally gave me scores to learn that I thought were going to be too challenging for me, when in fact they really pushed me to improve quickly and increased my enjoyment of playing/practicing. Finally, the little things. Sally has been very easy to communicate with and flexible with lessons. We have never had a miscommunication about lesson time/location and she has been very flexible when I haven't been able to do our standard times. Overall, I've really enjoyed my five months learning how to play the piano from Sally and I would 100% recommend her to any other person looking to learn how to play piano for the first time or improve on their existing skills.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

What do you learn in a first aid course?

First aid training gives you a variety of lifesaving skills for responding to many different emergency situations. In a first aid course you’ll learn about how to examine someone who’s been hurt, how to use a defibrillator, how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and how to control bleeding and trauma. Some courses include pediatric first aid as well as adult first aid; helping a choking infant, for example, is different from helping a choking adult. Although you can take CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) courses separately, most first aid training includes both.

In a first aid course you’ll also learn how to respond to:

  • Wounds, including punctures, cuts and hemorrhages
  • Heart attacks, chest pain and respiratory arrest
  • Bone fractures, sprains and torn muscles
  • First-, second- and third-degree burns
  • Poisoning
  • Choking
  • Bites and stings
  • Hypothermia or frostbite
  • Shock and seizures
