Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

How can I find out if a roofer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a roofer is an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by visiting your state or city’s government website. Local governments are providing up-to-date information for residents during this time.

A national guideline is available on CISA’s website, Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page addresses 16 different categories of essential infrastructure sectors, but note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Minor water damage on our bathroom ceiling indicated a roof leak. We determined the water was coming in through the roof vent pipe and that the pipe collar needed replacing. Thomas responded quickly to my request for a bid with what I felt was a fair price for the work. We arranged a time for him to come to the house. Before the appointed time, he sent a msg letting us know he was on his way. Having been in commercial project mgmnt for 15 yrs, I am familiar with how to correctly flash and seal roof stack pipes. Thomas removed the damaged collar, added a water/ice shield, replaced shingles were needed, and applied sealant where needed. He worked quickly and cleanly. Thomas has thorough knowledge of roofing systems and applications and is clearly experienced in repairing roofs. His business model is to focus on roof inspections and repairs. He does not install roofs. This allows him to charge a reasonable fee that businesses that are primarily roof installation companies are unable to do - there is a cost to take a person of an installation crew in order to do a small roof repair. The price for the work was in line with what I felt was fair. Highly recommend Thomas with Nova CS for roof repairs and/inspections.

I am really happy with the work C&A did on my roof. They are very professional and informative. I had a vent fan leaking on my roof that they replaced and sealed. I strongly recommend them.

Thomas and his crew did a fine job on the roof repair. Very pleased that he put together a quote so quickly and was able to get the repair done in good weather. We're considering further roof work now, but would recommend NOVA Consulting Services for any patching project like this one. NOVA came back to do another patch job today (for the same good price plus Thomas added some covers for the roof vents) -- and that should hold this 15 to 18-year-old roof for a couple more years. Great company to work with -- highly recommended.

Design roofing fixed a small leak coming into my kitchen from the roof above. They identified the problem areas and re-shingles and sealed the area. They also fixed a gutter that was blocked with debris that was over 30 feet high. Great service and I would use them again in the future.

The Home Doctor was an overall great experience for us. They showed up on time, worked extremely hard (roof took longer than originally planned due to the steepness our roof) for two straight days, and we ended up with a great looking roof. We did need to contact Phillip about the clean-up because the crew finished at dark and they had a hard time getting everything. Phillip showed up himself and finished cleaning a few days later. Overall, highly recommended!

Did a good job and was very responsive - took the time to explain how to monitor my roof and promised to come back and check on a problem area. Thanks! Very good at inspections.

Excellent emergency roof repair after windstorm. Came quickly to repair hole before rain storm. Could have charged me a bunch extra for the emergency but was very fair and didn’t

I don’t typically write reviews when I receive an estimate, but I was pretty turned off by my appointment. Background - my prior contractor installed the wrong color metal roof on the top story of my house. I met with roofers to determine if I should tear it down, paint it, or come up with another option. The first story of the house has no roof, just plywood, so it needs a roof installed. The good: they were on time to the appointment and called prior to confirm. They also came prepared with samples, which was helpful. The bad: I have a new construction home that had an existing first level (new second level). I find it off-putting to show up and tell someone the windows they selected are horrible windows (after they have been installed), and to comment on the workmanship of stuff that’s irrelevant to a roof estimate. I was given one estimate (after a long sales pitch) that I told them was outside of my budget. A few minutes later, I was told that is the price if I purchase within a year; the price drops significantly if I purchase within 90 days. Then I was given another price if I made a decision right then and was told the offer was off the table once they left. I was also told several times that they “don’t need the work”. I may be a fool, but how on earth can I go a year without a roof on part of my house. Of course I’m looking to put a roof on in the next 90 days so why not offer that from the beginning. I was also told that I must tear down the existing metal roofing because it was installed incorrectly (from glance, not inspection) and had no drip edge installed. I had another roofer come out to check today and was told that there IS a drip edge and it looks to be installed correctly. I don’t know if this is how they try to make a sale with everyone, or if they assumed I was an idiot because I’m a woman. I can’t speak to their work - it seems to be good from the reviews on Thumbtack, but drop the used car salesman pitch.

Very responsive when I discovered an active leak in my roof. They came out on a holiday weekend, did the emergency tarps and helped me get the insurance company involved for a resolution. FYI: Veteran Owned Business!

Brandon replaced a roof for me on a two-story home with a steeply pitched asymmetric roof. He was excellent from start to finish. He was prompt in responding to my inquiry, careful to understand my situation, clear in explaining my alternatives and the tradeoffs, patient with my many questions, prompt in delivering a proposal, accommodating to my schedule, and expert in installing a beautifully crafted roof of high-quality materials with a great warranty on time and at a price at or below that of the other companies that responded to my inquiries. (Of the other companies that responded -- and not all did respond -- all were late. Brandon was first to repond, and although I did take a few other bids for comparison's sake, he outshone the others at every step in every way.) Brandon delivered outstanding value for money and was professional, cheerful and courteous throughout. Working with him was a great experience. I definitely would use him again and readily recommend him to anyone.

Jason was fantastic. I had a minor roof issue that needed to be addressed. He was knowledgeable and knew exactly what was needed. He also helped diagnose some other issues, but was not trying to upsell. He was very professional and the quality of work was great.

Ben was very responsive to our requests and very accommodating and made the process very smooth. The quality of work is immaculate and the team is super friendly and professional. Thank you so much.

L&CC has been the saving grace for us, when many other contracting company's would not even attempt a trick vent gable project. While planning the date of replacement and installation, our building complex also had an emergency roof leak situation and L&CC came out immediately to look at it and fix, as a completely different project. I highly recommend working with Joaquin and L&CC!

We had a great experience with Josh and his team. He was easy to get ahold, always prompt in responding, ensured all the details of our siding repair and new roof were done the right way. He and his crew showed up on time and ensured we were satisfied with the work, especially when issues popped up unexpectedly. We very much appreciated the professional nature, work ethic, and timely execution. Highly recommend!

Amazing company to work with. Wind tore off a piece of my roof flashing and they came out and fixed. Thomas was prompt, courteous and explained exactly what he was doing. He fixed the flashing and then inspected the rest of the deck. He noticed several nails starting to pop so fixed those along with several along my gutters that needed hammered in. He reapplied additional sealant along my fan exhausts. He took time to share what he found and was very thoroughly. I would HIGHLY recommend
