I hired Tony Tan to completely renovate a small bathroom. It involved removing everything in the room (down to the beams and starting new.....removing tub, creating easier to enter shower, re-tiling, new vanity, toilet, shelves and fixtures. I also hired him to replace my air conditioner (outdoor component/compressor) for central air unit. The inside heating unit did not require replacement. The living area and a hallway were repainted following the bathroom remodeling. As a surprise to me, Tony installed a new ceiling fan (with dimmer light and remote) in my living area. A number of miscellaneous repairs such as installing blinds, fixing doorbell, replacing a fallen brick and a segment of siding that had worked lose, installing kitchen lights etc., were all completed as part of the overall project. I have asked for estimates on building a deck and replacing roofing on a shed......plan to use Tony and his crew to have this work done a bit later. Tony bases his prices on the amount of labor he expects a job to require, and includes prices for contractor grade paint, supplies etc. If you choose to upgrade on tile, fixtures, floors etc. you get the extra charge. If you want to go to Habitat and get surplus items at a reduced charge (I bet he'd use those to help you economise), although I didn't actually ask. He's just the kind of guy who listens to what you say you want, tries to find reasonable options that work for you, and does his best to make it happen, while earning a fair income. I hired in early March 2017, expecting the work to be completed while I was vacationing with my family the second week of April. Tony sent pictures or videos of the work done each day. He texted when his people were in the house and when they left for the day. The bathroom project had a firm beginning and ending date and deadlines were met. My only suggestion for improvement would be this: set a deadline for when the total project will be finished. The weather affected the timeliness of my fence repair, and my very demanding work schedule added some challenges. Also, Tony works on multiple jobs simultaneously and this means big jobs can become the priority and the finishing of smaller tasks can be postponed a little longer than is necessary. Still, I am very pleased with the improvements to my property and plan to hire for future projects.

Jeff did a great job for us. We hired him to clean and inspect our chimney and fireplace.  We thought we might have to spend a few thousand dollars on a liner, but he found that our chimney was in good shape overall, and our issues could be fixed with repairs that were much less costly.  Besides the cleaning, he ended up replacing a broken damper and strengthening areas of weak mortar. He also found seals on other roof vents that were either cracked or loose.  He repaired/replaced those, stopping a major leak potential in our attic.   Jeff also   cleared off other debris around the roof and gutters.  Overall, he did great work at a price better than we anticipated.

I hired world wide roofing to replace my parents roof. Jonathan had came out to give me an estimate, which was very fair after I had done my shopping around. He always took the time to keep me informed every step of the process, as well as address any needs and concerns I may have had for my roof/vent/gutter, etc, replacement from the very beginning through completion. The roofing and replacement crews did a fantastic job. They were very efficient and professional as well, they did an excellent job cleaning up when finished. I am very pleased and extremely satisfied with the work I had done, and I would strongly recommend reaching out to them. My roof and the work I had done looks amazing, a phenomenal job done right!

Experienced with roofing details and went deep to find the structural details needing to uncover a leak three other companies took wild guesses at. He showed me pictures of the diagnosis when giving an estimate and send me a report with pictures when completing the work. The leak has been fixed and I'm very pleased with this level of work quality and professionalism.

Brandon Construction was very reasonably priced and the quality of work was excellent. I was so impressed with their professionalism and prompt service that instead of one job, I had them completed seven different jobs ranging from hardwood floor replacement (3 rooms), widening doors, opening a wall to add counter space and painting. All works was done efficiently - most within one day for each job. When I had to select materials (granite/ flooring, etc.) they recommended vendors that have quality materials and knowledgeable staff as well as reasonable pricing. Every step of the process was easy and the results were amazing. I am so pleased!!!! I would highly recommend them for any home improvement needs. They are really great to work with.

These guys are top notch, really I can't say enough about how great they are. They arrived bright and early, had the roof removed from my home by 9am and quickly were installing the new roof. They did a phenomenal job, on this 90+ degree day, it looks fabulous, cleaned up fantastic. Everyone on the crew was super nice and courteous, and the owner Jon was here several times throughout the day to make sure everything was in order. I highly recommend JNVIS. I met with so many roofing contractors before selecting JNVIS and I am glad we did. I will definitely use them in the future if I have a need. (I have no idea why my photos are upside down lol but I attached some pictures of my gorgeous new roof)

I would highly recommend Caliber Roofing which is a small family run business. The owner Steve and his crew did an amazing job tearing off and replacing my horse barn roof (approximately 25 squares) and installing new synthetic fascia and 6 inch aluminum gutters, and also replacing damaged roofing boards/underlayment. He offers a competitive price, uses the best quality materials, and Steve works on the roof with his crew to ensure that the quality is to his standards. I was also impressed with the way they cleaned up the job, as it was critical there were no nails left around the barn for a horse to pick up. In summary, you cannot go wrong with having a roof or gutter replacement with Caliper Roofing.

I called Darren to help me finish a mudding job in my basement (roughly 600 sqft). I hung all the drywall and applied a completely rookie coat of initial mud. Darren came in with the lowest quote and handled the job. The overall results were outstanding. Our only issue was an initial underestimate of the amount of time it would take but the fault wasn't on Darren completely. He had a lot of challenges to overcome as result of my mud work. Darren kept his word and when I asked him to come back to do touch ups he was there the next day and made it awesome. I would recommend SJS to anyone. Thanks for everything Darren.

Tim was always quick to respond, and communication was open / effective. The crew showed up on time, and did a very good job with the roof, and a couple of small follow up asks from me. All in all, I was very happy with Ridgeline Roofing!

Mr Kirsch arrived on time. He was prepared. He came to give me an estimate however, he found the problem and repaired it on the spot. I thought he'd have to come back. I've put him in my contact list. He'll be the first i call if i have roofing concerns in the future.

Hired Roofing Solutions to assess our roof and make repairs after two previous estimates. Roofing Solutions (Robert) provided outstanding service from start to finish. Was very honest and willing to explain the work needed without overstating the problem. Finally, the work and craftsmanship was excellent. Pleasantly surprised with the level of commitment and professionalism. Highly recommend.

The job is in progress. I need a portion of my deck removed to allow for plumbing work to be done. Once the plumber is done then he will come back out to put the deck back together. So far so good.

Randy responded very quickly and was able to come over and look at my house within a couple days. I had a leaking window and had no idea where the leak was coming from but he fixed everything up right away and was super responsive and easy to communicate with. Another company had previously quoted me $600 more than Randy did for the same job. Definitely will use him again for gutter/roofing services

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

    • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
      • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
    • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
    • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
    • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
    • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.
