Paul Stanley, his wonderful wife and partner Stephanie and their incredible staff hit it out of the ballpark for us last evening in catering my daughter's wedding reception! Their professionalism, warmth and attention to detail were above and beyond any other professional caterer I've ever worked with. From the initial contact to the clean-up at the end I was repeatedly reassured about their skills in preparing and serving the feast. And "feast" it was! Our 65 guests as well as the bride and groom couldn't stop raving about the food and service. And this was done by a crew that traveled 2 1/2 hours to get here! So go ahead, call 'em! You won't be disappointed!

I think K&F Catering were stretched too thin on our event day. Food was slightly different than expected as a result, but still tasted good. Our guests seemed pleased.

Nola and her staff just did the catering for mine and my husband's wedding. From the first correspondence with Alie, everything was well thought out and they even handled all of our rentals. We requested a plated dinner for 80 guests and Nola and her team delivered perfection in the execution of serving our guests. We chose a Thai theme of flavors and the pork tenderloin was delicious. Her staff was friendly and very accommodating through our 5 hour event. If you want a caterer to execute your vision, I would definitely pick Nola's. Thank you Nola and her team! Kevin & Jeff

Chef Emme Catering Co. catered a beautiful office Thanksgiving lunch for us in Downtown Seattle. It was very quick and easy to book the services and finalize a menu and required services. They were on time and efficient setting up. Most importantly, the food was the best catered food we've all tasted! We will be using Chef Emme again for our catering needs and recommend their services to anyone wanting quality service and food.

Couldn't be more happier with my decision to go with Dogfather catering. Stephen went above and beyond to make sure our wedding went perfectly. He was more than happy to accommodate all our wants and needs and the whole process was stress free. Everyone loved his pizzas and the gourmet hot dog cart. Not to mention all his salads are delicious and a huge hit. Aside from his food, his staff is friendly and professional, they did all the could to make things run smoothly. I would highly recommend him to anyone and I still cannot thank him enough for all his hard work!

I contacted Joy on very short notice for a company Christmas party. She quickly furnished me with several great menus to choose from. We did a non hosted event, and I probably only had to interact with a total of 20 minutes to plan the entire event. The food was great, and the portions were very large. My employees were very happy. I absolutely recommend Joy Max Catering.

I absolutely adore Chef Dayo! She is so sweet and kind and was very accommodating with all of our questions and menu changes for our wedding catering. And her food is delicious! We didn't want to do standard wedding fare, and her southern/Caribbean food really hit the mark. The jerked tofu/chicken were fantastic, and the fried okra is to die for. I really wish she had a restaurant so that I could eat her food more often:) The only thing is that I wish her staff had made sure the groom and I had enough to eat before putting the food away and moving to the dessert course, but besides that everything was perfect and I would highly recommend her to others.

When it came to food for our wedding, that was the part my husband wanted to choose. He is a chef, so it really meant a lot to him that our menu was phenomenal. After venue searching at resorts, we became discouraged with their preset menus with typical wedding food. We then decided to go with a venue where we could hire a caterer. Once the venue manager found out my husband's occupation, she immediately referred us to Twist Catering, stating they were for "foodies." We live here locally, so we were able to visit them for a tasting. It was out of this world. Chef Joel prepared everything for us, as discussed each menu item with us. We met with him numerous times, he helped me with the set up of everything, suggestions, he was there every step of the way for us during the wedding planning process. He even stopped by at the wedding to check on us. And the final menu chosen for the wedding was insane. I'm at the age where a lot of my friends are getting married, as well as attending weddings & all of the guests commented on how exceptional the food was. My husband & I have both worked in restaurants for many years, and know good service can be difficult to find. The food was delivered promptly, and the servers & bartenders were on point. They constantly checked on myself, as well as my husband & his family to keep our drinks full. Between the food, the exceptional service, & the kind treatment we received, it was truly memorable.

I've had the pleasure of being both a client of Edible Hue as well as dining at several events they have created dinners at. When I was a guest Edible Hue has catered to my personal dietary restrictions with the same artistic flair and deliciousness as was served on the regular menu. When I employed them they were responsive, cheerful and creative in organizing and executing a tasting menu that was specially paired with specific champagnes. I look forward to my next encounter with all of Edible Hue - Andy, Myrissa and Amara - as either a client or a guest.

I am a foodie so when i saw fliers inviting for a free food tasting at Stella Maris Kitchen i could not miss it! I was amazed at the quality and variety of the food that was available!! Menu consisted of delightful African dishes, tasty Italian pastas, gourmet American burgers, salads, sandwiches etc. What i liked most was the fact that everything on the menu was the healthy version: no sugar or additives. I raved about them in the office and we had them cater for our Christmas party and everyone loved the food. They have since catered two company birthday parties and a recent send-off party for a member of my staff. The latter event was impromptu yet hot, freshly prepared salmon sandwiches, shrimp pasta salad, garden salad, Jollof rice and tasty sauteed greens for 50 people was delivered at short notice I will certainly recommend you try them!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
    • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
    • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
    • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

    • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
    • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
    • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
    • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
    • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
