Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth getting a personal trainer?

If you have fitness goals that you’re having trouble accomplishing on your own, hiring a personal trainer can be worth the money. People rarely regret getting in shape — even if it costs money. Personal trainers create accountability, as you’ll have to confess to them if you don’t stick to your training schedule. They’re trained to push you just hard enough, and they take your body type and goals into account when creating a fitness plan.

How often should you see a personal trainer?

How often you should see your personal trainer depends both on your budget and your fitness level. If you’re new to the exercise routine, maybe start with one to three visits per week to establish a good routine and understanding. Talk to personal trainers near you to figure out the perfect cadence for your personal training sessions.

How much does a personal trainer cost near me?

Expect to pay between $35 and $90 per hour for a personal trainer near you. The length of the session, as well as the number of sessions you book in advance, will have an impact on the price. You can often get lower prices per session by booking more of them. Group training also tends to be less expensive than one-on-one training, as is going to the gym instead of having the trainer come to meet you. Trainer certification is also a factor — trainers with more certification are likely to charge more.

It's important to do your research and get cost estimates from several personal trainers near you before you hire anyone.

How can I find a trainer?

Search for personal trainers near you online, and identify the ones with the highest ratings. Read their customer testimonials, and look at customers’ before-and-after photos (if available). It’s also important to find out whether the trainers sought professional training and certification, if they can adhere to your schedule and if they can train you at a location that works for both of you.

Finally, contact several trainers for cost estimates. This way, you can hire a trainer who not only provides great services but also fits within your budget.

What exactly does a personal trainer do?

A personal trainer is tasked with working with a client to achieve fitness goals. Personal trainers may take clients in a small group or do one-on-one training. Their focus is on fitness goals — muscular capacity, working on cardiovascular endurance, improving flexibility, and even recommending diet changes and at-home exercises. Personal trainers may work with clients in the gym or at their homes, depending on their preference.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session.

Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

I highly recommend Matt. My concerns about starting personal training were: I haven't ever lifted weights before, I wasn't sure about having a male personal trainer, I thought I might hate it. But I have had a great experience. Matt makes the workouts difficult but accessible. It isn't at all uncomfortable that he is a man. And I always leave feeling happy that I went. He is really nice, professional and helps me work toward my goals.

Just finished up a training session with Larry and I’m so glad I made the decision to pursue personal training. It was tiring but 100% worthwhile. Larry was super patient and very motivational when I needed a boost. The moves weren’t overly complicated but felt challenging. Elev8te is clean and centrally located and they have a ton of equipment. Looking forward to my next session!

While working with Doug, he taught me how to work out properly with perfect form and helped me gain muscle. I couldn’t stay with him long because of my schedule, but the time I had with Doug was great and he’s a great personal trainer!

Tyson has been training me almost three times a week for a month now. He responded to my request for group personal training in an outdoor setting. Although he did not have an outdoor fitness going at the time, he exceeded my request by starting up a group workout in a park close by in North Phoenix/Deer Valley area. I've been receiving quality training from him at a cost that was affordable to me. I've since invited my friends and he has had other clients join. The group is growing and it makes the workout more fun and challenging! I enjoy our workouts so much more than training in a gym by myself. I hope others find this review helpful and join in on our growing boot camp!

We began working out with Marcus last week and have found Marcus to be a driven, kind person who enjoys helping his clients achieve their goals. The workouts are more effective than Orange Theory or Pilates which we hadn’t been doing. I would recommend Marcus to anyone who wants the flexibility of personal training at home and wants the results!

We hired Greg for personal training in our home. I would like to post both my and my wife's reviews. Me: Greg is an amazing, inspirational, and energetic trainer and person. When looking for a good trainer, there are several factors to consider. Let me answer each one and convince you that you need to hire Greg. Affordability: This is probably one of the most important points for most people. Personal training can get very expensive very quickly. Greg's prices are very reasonable and were actually lower than some of his less-qualified competitors. Punctuality: Greg is on time every single session except when there are outside factors that can not be accounted for, like an accident or worse traffic than usual. In these cases, we always have a text with his ETA. Having hired several contractors over the years, having someone who actually arrives either exactly on time or gives you an exact ETA is an amazing and rare thing. Professionalism: Greg is not only an absolute professional, he actually makes you feel like you've been friends for a long time. As a trainer is someone you're hiring to come into your home and likely be in your personal space bubble, it is paramount that they are professional. Greg is professional while being courteous and respectful. Also, he has legitimate schooling in personal training and has worked with several professional athletes. He knows his stuff! Workouts: Greg caters your workouts to you. You do a series of fitness tests at the beginning and the workouts are designed accordingly. You never have a chance to get bored because they change almost every session. The workouts are tough, but exciting. When you revisit something you did 4 sessions ago, and notice how much better you've gotten at it, it is an amazing feeling. Progress: Greg checks your body composition at the beginning and then you can use that to gauge progress. He makes sure to check in with you and ask how your weight is doing without being pushy or judgemental which is very important. Diet: Greg does hold you to a good diet to help you lose weight and tone. This was definitely challenging for us at first, but he holds you accountable and we found a way to make it work. Once you eat clean, and someone is checking up on you, it makes a huge difference in your progress. I feel like my energy level is higher and doesn't fluctuate anymore. Overall: Greg is one of those hidden gems you find online. A lot of trainers are out there and all have good reviews, but Greg is something else. He is professional, funny, courteous, tough, friendly, and holds you accountable. Basically, everything you want in a trainer. Stop looking around and just hire him. I am someone who does way too much research before I make decisions and the decision to hire him was absolutely the correct one. Also, he is the most energetic person I've ever met. I don't know how he has the insane energy to train us as his last client of the day after working over 13-14 hrs. TL; DR: Stop your personal trainer research and just hire him. Seriously. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Wife's Review: We have done 11 sessions with Greg so far and he is an absolute delight. We are usually his last session of the day and we are always amazed at how energetic he is (even after incredibly long days). Greg actually makes training fun. He is that rare combination of someone who keeps you going and accountable but also uses humor and stories to make the training sessions enjoyable. I am not kidding when I say I actually look forward to our training sessions. He also switches up activities and exercises so that we do not get bored with the same workouts. He challenges and pushes us to unleash our full potential. It has only been a month and we are both already seeing fantastic results! Greg not only works on training and exercise but he has also given us extremely useful information on nutrition. As a person, he is so fun to be around and has a magnetic personality as well. Greg has changed our lives for the better and we look forward to future sessions with him.

So far so good. Have had one session and went great. Only three people total in a nice gym perfect for personal training. He was attentive and could tell he was paying close attention. Hset goals that were attainable but only of I pushed my self. He didn't try to 9verwork me the first time but I left with nothing in the tank. That is what I needed and was looking forward.

She was kind and encouraging- I never felt pressured to do anything I wasn't ready for. I learned a lot and would definitely recommend her to anyone ready to go to the next level with their fitness!! Thank you, Ideal Physiques!!

I have been extremely satisfied with Scott and Kim at Underground Fitness! Scott was very welcoming and listened to what I was looking for in a program and has accommodated my needs and schedule. He took a personal interest in teaching me techniques to help with back problems. I recently started training with Kim, who has great experience as well and is pushing me as I need to be, while also paying attention to my lower back weakness.

Matt is by far the best personal trainer that I have ever had. I have had trainers in the past that do not listen to your wants and needs and put you on a diet plan that is not realistic, or a cardio plan that is not cohesive to your goals. That is NOT the case with Matt. He listens to what I want to accomplish and continuously makes adjustments as needed. When I change my goals, he changes his plan of attack. He is incredibly knowledgeable in all areas of fitness and nutrition. His schedule is always flexible and he has went out of his way to schedule insanely early sessions with me so my work schedule is possible. In the past year that I have trained with Matt, I haven't just received a trainer, I have received a coach and a friend. He constantly cheers me on when I sign up for a obstacle course race, a run, or a competition. His workout sessions always contain new content so I do not become bored. I can not express adequately on how much Matt helps his clients.

Doug is INCREDIBLE! I really wanted to get in better shape after years and years of telling myself that I was going to start working out. I was pretty nervous about working with a personal trainer since I had never worked with one before and wasn’t sure what to expect, but after training with Doug for a month and a half I have absolutely zero regrets! I’m lifting weight that I never thought I would be able to lift and I’m already noticing my body looking and feeling stronger. If you’re at all hesitant or unsure, just try out his (free!) first session! I can say without a doubt that you’ll have nothing to lose and EVERYTHING to gain, thanks Doug!

I've worked with a lot of personal trainers and Doug is by far the best. I am recovering from a frustrating injury and there's a lot that I can't do but he accommodates workouts and has helped me gain strength despite this challenge. His workouts are challenging but he is ALWAYS positive and motivating - I always leave workouts feeling better than when I walked in the door. I have struggled with sticking to a workout routine for years and Doug is helping me break out of that cycle and become the best me! Highly recommend him for anyone!

Tyson became my personal trainer a few months ago and I can't recommend him enough. Always on time and upbeat, he makes the sessions fun and interesting without the drill sergeant mentality. He pushes you to your limit and leaves you feeling like you just had the best workout of your life, every time! Tyson makes himself available for questions in between sessions about nutrition or what workout i should be doing. My goals were to lose weight, gain strength, which I am succeeding in doing and the bonus is I feel like I have made a friend as well as a trainer. Best decision I made for myself and my health was to hire Tyson. Can't wait to see what the next few months results brings!!

I feel very fortunate to have Gregory as my personal trainer! From the start I knew I would benefit from his vast knowledge and experience in the profession, and felt confident that he would provide the personal approach and guidance I required. As a 65-year old woman who had not been following a fitness regimen for some time, I didn’t really know where to start to work toward my goals in a consistent measurable way. Gregory assessed my overall condition, and then designed a solid and comprehensive -- yet easy to follow -- flexible program that is tailored to my needs. It is based on the most current researched methods and is manageable, interesting, and fun! I always look forward to our sessions! Additionally, he is patient and works with my limitations to make certain that the techniques are accurate so that I avoid any injuries. Between sessions he maintains regular contact via texts in order to encourage me, and to keep me motivated and on track. Even in a short time I can already see improvements and doubt I would have achieved these results without his assistance! If you are looking for a competent trainer who genuinely cares about his clients, then I would give Gregory the highest recommendation!

Matt is an excellent trainer. His nutrition plan is tangible, easy to follow, and not unreasonably restrictive. He is able to show how to properly exercise to avoid injuring yourself, which leads to a reasonable and quick recovery time for the next session. I purchased individual personal sessions with Matt, currently working out 3 times per week with him; however, he also offers small group rates as well. He is also very flexible with scheduling. I highly recommend Matt for anyone that is a novice, like me, intermediate, experienced, or anyone needing to get back into the swing of fitness.

After years of trying to talk myself into going to a gym regularly, I knew the only thing that would get me there is to have the accountability of a trainer. Matt's reviews online from his clients are what made me contact him. And now I understand why.... Working with Strive Fitness is unlike anything you would "expect" personal training would be like.....In the best ways possible. Not only have I been shocked in what my body can transform into, or develop strength I never knew I had, I had no idea the "gym atmosphere" could be so enjoyable! Matt is kind, encouraging, so down to earth and very personable. He truly invests in his clients and cares about them. Not only their personal health goals, but about their lives. He is always available for questions, be it fitness, strength, food etc. He doesn't just give you an hour for the time he's paid, his clients know he's there for them anytime. That is what sets Matt and his business apart from others. Strive Fitness of course is amazing at what they do - they are skilled and educated in this business. It's what you would expect in hiring a professional. But I believe it takes more than that to run a business working with people, and this is one of those very rare finds where it ALL comes together.

I have previous physical injuries and was worried I wouldn't be able to find a personal trainer who could work with me. But Underground Fitness has been wonderful. Scott took the time to truly understand what my body needed specifically and tailored every work out each week just for me. I've seen great results and even have less pain in areas doctors could never resolve. He also took the time to teach me, so I can eventually do a comprehensive work out on my own. Which was huge for me! Definitely recommend Underground Fitness!
