Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

Reviews for Phoenix tiling professionals

Gomez did a fantastic job of replacing the tile and carpet left behind by the previous owners by laying out the new tile in our home. He pays attention to details, alignment of tile in the room, and gave very useful design inputs. His teams job was perfect and they finished on time even after we added additional tiling requests. Very professional and detail oriented, will definitely use him the next time we upgrade any tiles. Thanks!

I decided to use Alex for my tile job based on the previous reviews I read on Thumbtack. I was not disappointed, Alex is as advertised, friendly, courteous, punctual and amazing with tile. He installed over 1600 sq/ft of tile and also removed and replaced our baseboards. His attention to detail was impressive. We were also replacing an old tub in our master bath and had to join old tile with new, we only had a few pieces of the old tile to use and Alex was able to bring it together in a way that we could not have imagined and it looked amazing. I would definitely use Alex again and would recommend him to anyone who is looking for a tile installer!

Geraldo and his crew were excellent. They showed up a few minutes early each day. They were friendly, professional, and worked quickly. We had two rooms we wanted to have re-tiled. one had carpet and one had laminate. We bought the tile and grout and they installed it. You can't tell where the new tile started and the old tile stopped. They had the job done in two days. HIghly recommend!

Andrew was amazing. He arrived on time to give us an estimate on the job we needed done. He arrived on time on the day he told us he could perform the work. He had to remove some broken tile and install new tile. His work was impeccable. We could not tell the difference between the new tile he laid and the present tile. He’s very friendly and professional. I highly recommend All Pro Custom Flooring.

Company did not use a membrane between the concrete floor and the tile and I am concerned that the cracks in the concrete will eventually transfer through the tile. They did give me an additional three year warranty, however.

Chris and team tiled our bathroom floor. They were very responsive to our initial request and continued to be responsive during the entire process. Chris explained what was going to take place and when the work would be completed. We had a couple of concerns with the thin set from the previous tile adhered to the concrete. However, Chris belayed those concerns by addressing the process they would complete to ensure the new tile adhered properly. Overall, I am very pleased with the work performed and would highly recommend Chris for any future tiling.

Incredible job getting ALL the grime out of tile Grout that was BLACK with dirt. It was 25 year-old tile and the Grout was actually a very light color underneath! Looks incredibly better. Great job and a nice guy too.

Oh my GOSH! Gomez Tile is amazing! From start to finish, Gerardo was punctual, friendly, very professional AND did wonderful work at a reasonable price. Gerardo and his crew were great about talking us through each step in the process. In the end, they used less tile than the "recommended overage" so that I have BOXES of tile that can be returned for refund. They finished earlier than was anticipated and took good care of my home. At the end of the project they cleaned up after themselves - even in the garage! I definitely plan to use Gomez Tile again for a future bath remodel and highly recommend them in a heartbeat to anyone who is looking for a phenomenal tiling professional. Gerardo and his guys are THE BEST and we are beyond pleased with our new flooring.

He was great at first, thought he was going to provide a good job. It started taking longer than expected and I understand how these things go sometimes so I was happy as long as the finish product came out nice. Let's start with this, I have to take all of the floor tile out since nothing is straight. I am also taking all of the curb tile off since they are all cut at different sizes. He used my new countertops in the bathroom to mark his tile which the marker stained and I had to replace. That's 600 dollars. Demoing and replace the floor and curb tile will run 400 so he cost me close to 1000 dollars.

Jim and his crew are wonderful! We had a room we needed tiled and when we started ourselves it turned into a giant mess. Jim was able to schedule us within a week, his crew was always on time, and we are thrilled with the price and quality of their work. We will definitely reach out to him for all of our tiling and contracting needs!,,llc.

Ralph did an amazing job with our shower repair. He had to match existing tiles and the end look matches exactly. He is very knowledgeable and explained what he was going to do in detail prior to doing the work. I would highly recommend him and will use him again when I need tile work done.

I cannot say enough good things about this company. Robert went above and beyond!! I had a very, very difficult task and he figured out a way that would work and get the job done. I had some peel and stick tiles on top of my ceramic tile and wanted them removed. He did that and found a way to remove all the sticky adhesive from my tiles. It was awful but he did it!! I highly recommend Robert and will be using him again, as well as letting my friends and family know about his company.
