Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth getting a personal trainer?

If you have fitness goals that you’re having trouble accomplishing on your own, hiring a personal trainer can be worth the money. People rarely regret getting in shape — even if it costs money. Personal trainers create accountability, as you’ll have to confess to them if you don’t stick to your training schedule. They’re trained to push you just hard enough, and they take your body type and goals into account when creating a fitness plan.

How often should you see a personal trainer?

How often you should see your personal trainer depends both on your budget and your fitness level. If you’re new to the exercise routine, maybe start with one to three visits per week to establish a good routine and understanding. Talk to personal trainers near you to figure out the perfect cadence for your personal training sessions.

How much does a personal trainer cost near me?

Expect to pay between $35 and $90 per hour for a personal trainer near you. The length of the session, as well as the number of sessions you book in advance, will have an impact on the price. You can often get lower prices per session by booking more of them. Group training also tends to be less expensive than one-on-one training, as is going to the gym instead of having the trainer come to meet you. Trainer certification is also a factor — trainers with more certification are likely to charge more.

It's important to do your research and get cost estimates from several personal trainers near you before you hire anyone.

How can I find a trainer?

Search for personal trainers near you online, and identify the ones with the highest ratings. Read their customer testimonials, and look at customers’ before-and-after photos (if available). It’s also important to find out whether the trainers sought professional training and certification, if they can adhere to your schedule and if they can train you at a location that works for both of you.

Finally, contact several trainers for cost estimates. This way, you can hire a trainer who not only provides great services but also fits within your budget.

What exactly does a personal trainer do?

A personal trainer is tasked with working with a client to achieve fitness goals. Personal trainers may take clients in a small group or do one-on-one training. Their focus is on fitness goals — muscular capacity, working on cardiovascular endurance, improving flexibility, and even recommending diet changes and at-home exercises. Personal trainers may work with clients in the gym or at their homes, depending on their preference.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session.

Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

We hired Vee to motivate and train our teenage son who has mild autism. Not only is Vee an expert in personal training, but his kindness, patience and infectious personality has transformed my son's attitude about exercise. He's helping my son gain much needed self-esteem and has been a real mentor and friend to him!

Mark Mueller is an excellent personal trainer and I highly recommend him. I trained with Mark for about 4 months and was very pleased with the results. I wish I was still working with him, but I moved away. He is extremely punctual, and was very motivating for me. He has a great knowledge of all things muscle and fitness and was very patient to listen to my numerous questions and suggestions. If you've never worked with a personal trainer, you are missing out, and Mark will not disappoint. He will push you. Your core will get stronger, and people will notice. Mark is very cognizant to keep you healthy, and I was very pleased with how we avoided any injuries- if a movement was awkward he was able to adapt the movements so they could performed without injury.

Dan is a great personal trainer! This is my first time ever working with a trainer, and I have got to say, if Dan wasn't there helping me workout, there is no way I would do it on my own. He really pushes me beyond what I thought I was capable of, and I am already seeing great results. He is always punctual, and has a great positive attitude!

Marci is very easy to work with and has tailored her training consistently to my personal needs. These are needs that I’ve identified as well as ones that she sees as critical to my upgrade in fitness. I have a variety of nagging issues due to chronic overuse as I’ve been very active in many athletic activities most of my life. I feel extremely fortunate to have her expertise and reliability. I have had other training experiences and she’s the best!

Patrick is the best personal trainer I’ve ever had - there’s no simpler way of putting it. He pushes me beyond what I think is possible for myself, and it is obvious from the results I’ve had. I couldn’t be happier that I found him, or recommend him more highly to anyone who is trying to get both their body and life in shape.

I had been lifting and working out for a few months prior to meeting Mark. I had already lost a good amount of weight but started to hit a plateau and decided I wanted to seek a personal trainer to help me break my plateau. I searched online and was having quite a bit of trouble finding a trainer that seemed to be the right match for me. I was specifically looking for a trainer with a great deal of knowledge about lifting, nutrition, weight loss, etc. Trying to find the right trainer seemed to be quite a hassle. I was connected with Mark through thumbtack and decided to meet Mark for my initial consultation. Talking with Mark for ten minutes was all I needed to believe I had probably found the right personal trainer. We have been training together for 6 weeks now and OMG this guy is fantastic. He is sooo knowledgeable in every aspect of health and training. He is very easy going and patient and you can tell immediately that he really cares about helping his clients. He is very detailed, always on time for sessions, and really goes the extra mile to help you reach your fitness goals. I have lost and additional 20lbs since I started training with Mark and have gained a ton of muscle mass. Not only that, but I also have such a better understanding of nutrition and how to properly weight lift, control my diet etc. in a way that is most beneficial to me, my health, and my safety. Mark is simply fantastic. Such a great guy and I highly recommend him to anyone. Whether you are just starting to work out and want to lose weight, or if you are more advanced and want someone with a great deal of knowledge to help you maximize your results, Mark is absolutely the guy to help you achieve these goals. A++++

BERTO has been my trainer since September 2017 & he is amazing. Workouts are always challenging but fun at the same time. He is tough and makes sure you are working hard. I thoroughly enjoy my sessions each week & berto was so easy to get along . He is very helpful, encouraging & motivating. His professionalism and enthusiastic commitment to his work and ultimately his clients, provides the perfect scenario for success and sets foundations for a new healthier lifestyle. I definitely recommend Berto to anyone looking for great quality personal training.

I moved to Denver leaving a trainer in Chicago that was a personal friend. I respond best to a trainer relationship that is a mixture of professional and casual. Being an openly gay, overweight lumbering enigma, I was concerned that my highly inappropriate sense of humor would create an awkwardness between Chad and I (I just can't help half the crap I say especially under exercise induced duress). Since the first moment I met Chad, he has consistently treated me with dignity and respect, while rolling comfortably with my very unique (crass) sense of humor. Chad is a trainer for the people. I was skeptical since his prices were the lowest I could find and sometimes you "pay for what you get". I assure you, in the case of Obstacle Destruction (Chad Johnson), the product far surpasses the price.

I am so glad I found Berto! I've been training with him for a month and it's been the most intense and fulfilling thing I've done for myself in awhile. He pushes me beyond the limits I would set for myself, spots me and motivates me to finish my sets/reps and we have conversations about our real lives, not just the gym. He's respectful and non-judgmental of all body types, Berto's truly all about them gainz 💪😁 The value was the best I could find while looking for a personal trainer and he's able to work with my schedule! I recommend Berto to anyone who might be nervous about starting the journey to a healthier lifestyle, having a trainer gives me the confidence and will to keep showing up and strive for better!

Lucie is a fantastic personal trainer. She has a great home gym setup with a variety of equipment to do a diverse set of workouts. She is attentive to your goals and crafts workouts to meet those goals. The workouts are also highly diverse, so you don’t get bored while still making progress I did a 24 session package with Lucie and it changed my entire approach and outlook to fitness. I burned fat and gained muscle through her training. But best of all I learned how to properly workout. Now I can continue down my path of fitness because of the foundation she helped me set.

I trained with Mark for a period of 10 weeks at my apartment gym in downtown Denver in summer 2014. He was a fantastic personal trainer, better than any of the several trainers I'd worked with previously. Mark's approach is very well rounded - not only did he train me in the gym, but he also continuously offered personalized nutrition advice by studying my food diary. He came prepared to each workout with a list of exercises for the day, and he always emailed them to me afterward so that I could keep track and do them on my own later on. In addition, he noted down the weights/number of reps I performed for each exercise so he could take a more quantitative approach to increasing the intensity of my workouts over time. On that note, he started me off with a fitness test and then took my measurements at regular intervals over the 10 weeks so we could chart my progress. Mark was super friendly and pleasant, easy to talk to, happy to address the wide variety of random health/nutrition questions that popped into my head, and made himself available via email or phone any time for follow-up questions. Even after I moved away from Denver I continue to email him various questions about my workout routines and he gets back to me promptly and enthusiastically. Mark really does care about my overall health and fitness and was a great partner and motivator for me during my time in Denver. I wholeheartedly recommend Mark to anyone looking for a great personal trainer in the Denver area!

Osmosis is everything I could have hoped for in personal training. I've seen huge results in a short period of time! A professional, clean environment with good equipment, and a fun, laid-back vibe. Completely custom, science-based programming has helped me meet and exceed goals – this is not one-size-fits-all assembly line fitness. I've built up my strength, increased muscle mass, and reduced body fat – Osmosis made me hot ;)

Kristen has the knowledge and experience in personal training and really loves what she does. However, I had one session that consisted of paperwork, getting measurements, and speaking of goals for a majority of the session. I was charged $65 for a session I maybe worked out about 15 minutes max. I’d recommend giving a free first session to start with. Also, it felt misleading by not telling me I was getting charged my first session. Not good customer service!

I feel extremely lucky to have found Vee as my personal trainer on Thumbtack. He’s very personable, knowledgeable and motivating! I’m definitely a project for him considering how out of shape I am but I wouldn’t choose anyone else for this journey I’m on. If you’re like me and out of shape and struggling to find someone to help you that is non-judge mental, funny and just plain a good person, you won’t find anyone better than Vee! 5 stars all day long!

Pat is absolutely amazing!! I sought out a personal trainer because I was struggling to get fit on my own and he's truly transformed the way I exercise and get in shape. He personalized my sessions to account for my fitness level and goals. I've been working with him for about 6 weeks and I couldn't be happier. He pushes me when I want to give up and adjusts my workout plan/meal plan to help me achieve results.

Wonderful trainer! As a former cyclist who has a long-term mobility disability and chronic pain due to a spine injury, looking for a personal trainer who can hold me to high standards for physical performance while also avoiding triggering any injuries that would require yet another surgery is a really hard task. Michael is the first person I have worked with who is able to negotiate both. He is exceptionally knowledgeable in neurological injuries with his background in spine physical therapy rehab and also an expert eye in detecting issues in form that have translated into better gains in physical strength and performance for me on a weekly basis. Michael has such a deep knowledge of different modalities of exercise that we can consistently change up workouts and cycles to focus on different outcomes (e.g., stamina, raw strength, etc.), keep things interesting, and still not need to dive into any of the activities placed off-limits by my surgeon. In addition, Michael is also well-versed in working with people of different bodies, as well as different identities and backgrounds; as a disabled queer person with a non-US background, I would whole-heartedly recommend him as a qualified and much-more than competent trainer to work supportively folks of different identities and background (which, if this applies to you, you know is not true of many trainers in the Denver-area!). And, although it's not exactly in the job description, I must mention that he's also a great, empathic, and funny person that you will not mind spending time with. If you're looking for a trainer, and especially if you might have different needs from someone in this space, I would strongly recommend giving Michael a chance.

I couldn't be more impressed with Matt as my personal trainer. On day one he took my measurements so I we could establish my start point allow me to see my progress along the way. He is ALWAYS on time and prepared. Working out with a P.T. can be very intimidating but I felt at ease with Matt right away, he's very nice and easy to talk to. His workouts are tough but he pushes you through and let's you modify if need be. I already feel stronger after 4 sessions with him. I HIGHLY recommend Matt!!

Mike is amazing! You can really tell he cares about his clients, he checks in via text throughout the week to keep fitness and eating right top of mind, which we appreciate! He is always on time, and our sessions consist of workouts that take our personal needs, goals and injuries in mind. I love that he also focuses on nutrition and has provided so many great suggestions and encouragement to fit it into our real life. He is not some "meat-head" trainer, he is kind, caring, compassionate and professional. We have only had a month with him, but I look forward to our results in a year!

I started working with Mark as an out-of-shape, overweight senior citizen. . Many personal trainers have a templet and expect their clients to fit their routine. Not Mark. Mark's professional approach began with a thorough assessment of my capabilities and limitations. From there he designed a series of exercises that built my body's core, cardio and muscles. He knew just how hard to push, always with humor and patience, and when to stop. He knows which machines to use and which ones to avoid. I left each session feeling both "worked out" and enlivened. His communication skills are excellent. I am still working with him and am increasingly more and more satisfied with the results.
