Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor and a concrete floor?

The time it takes to install hardwood and concrete floors varies based on the condition of your current floors, the size of your floors and other factors. Use the following information to gauge how long your flooring installation might take.

Time it takes to install a hardwood floor: Several days to 2+ weeks

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation.

During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Subfloor repair can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins.

The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, staining takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied.

Time it takes to install a concrete floor: 2 days to 1 week

Installing concrete floors can take anywhere from two days to a week, depending on what you need done. Some of the factors that can impact how long it will take to install concrete floors are:

  • The size of the space
  • The stain or finish
  • The condition of your existing floor
  • Whether you want intricate, simple or no designs
  • The overall complexity of the project

To get an accurate estimate of how long installing concrete floors will take for your home, speak to a concrete contractor near you.

Should I remove baseboards when installing hardwood floors?

You can install hardwood floors without removing baseboards, but it’s recommended that you remove them to fix baseboards that aren’t properly aligned, cover the expansion gap, adjust the boards’ height and ensure the baseboards match the new flooring. When talking to contractors, ask if they recommend removing your baseboard before they install your hardwood floors.

What is the best hardwood floor?

The best hardwood floors are made from durable, hard species like oak, maple and cherry. Solid hardwood is typically the better choice over engineered wood because you can sand out the scratches multiple times. However, engineered hardwood is better equipped for humid households.

Consider buying prefinished hardwood flooring, which can be more durable and simplify the installation process. Plus, prefinished wood often comes with a warranty from the factory.

Bamboo is another popular option, though be aware that some might not be as eco-friendly as others due to its production process. Some of the popular hardwood floor brands are Bruce, Carlisle and Lumber Liquidators.

To ensure you choose the best type of wood flooring for your home, hire one of the top hardwood floor installation professionals near you.

How thick is hardwood flooring?

Hardwood flooring generally comes in several thicknesses, with thicker, high-quality boards typically being more expensive and more durable. The thinnest is 5/16 inch thick. The next thickness is 3/8 inch thick, and the thickest solid hardwood flooring is generally 3/4 inch thick or 1/2 inch thick. The cost for each thickness varies by the brand, retailer and type of wood. Generally, you might see prices ranging as low as  $2.50 to $6 per square foot.

Do engineered wood floors scratch easily?

Yes, but engineered wood flooring has the same susceptibility to scratching as hardwood flooring. Engineering wood floors have a layer of real wood on top. For this reason, engineered hardwood reacts the same way that regular hardwood does to scratching. If you don’t mind a few character marks on your floor like small scratches and dents, this is not a problem. However, engineered wood can be sanded down and resealed if the damage gets too great.

Find a hardwood floor professional in your area who can tell you more about the pros and cons of engineered wood floors.

What are the different types of flooring I can install in my home?

Here are four popular types of flooring you can install in your home.

Solid wood flooring:

Solid wood flooring is made up of 100% wood, and has a very natural look and feel. It can add value to your home and. It can resist wear and tear, and be sanded and refinished multiple times. However, solid wood is susceptible to humidity and water damage. When it’s humid, solid wood could expand and if there’s a flood, it will be hard for the wood to return to its natural shape.

Laminate flooring:

Laminate wood flooring is an artificial product that mimics real wood flooring. Its core consists of fiberboard material, topped by an image print layer and sealed with a clear protective film. Laminate flooring is UV-resistant and less expensive than solid hardwood (approximately $3 to $7 per square foot to install). However, it also has a lower-quality feel, is unable to be sanded and refinished, has a lifespan of around 25 years and will invariably have a repeated print, according to Consumer Reports

A laminate hardwood floor is popular in living areas like dining rooms and kitchens. Their quality has improved dramatically in recent years, making them an attractive alternative to more expensive flooring types. Laminate flooring can also be scratch-prone, easy to clean and maintain, and resistant to moisture.

Vinyl flooring:

Vinyl flooring is made completely out of PVC plastic and is an excellent option for moisture-prone areas like bathrooms and kitchens. It is durable, comfortable and inexpensive. Vinyl plank flooring and vinyl floor tiles can also imitate stone, tile and wood. However, it is fairly easy to spot vinyl flooring as synthetic. Install luxury vinyl plank and sheet vinyl flooring in areas where moisture is a concern.

Engineered wood flooring:

Engineered wood flooring often has a plywood-core substrate and a genuine hardwood veneer as its uppermost layer. Engineered wood floors are more impervious to humidity than regular hardwood, meaning that it’s less likely to expand, warp and buckle, according to Consumer Reports. However, it can dent easily. The best engineered hardwood has a thicker veneer, as well as a quality that allows it to be sanded down and refinished to increase its lifespan. It can be as durable as solid hardwood, and it’s often an affordable choice for many homeowners.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a flooring professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To safely set up a consultation or appointment with a flooring professional and avoid the risk of transmitting COVID-19, start with an online search. Contact the professional through a message and ask to set up a video or phone call to discuss the project. This lets the professional visualize what needs to be done without physically needing to be there. Discuss the project’s timeline, budget, virtual payment capabilities and adherence to guidelines set forth locally and by the CDC.

Can I use digital payments to pay for floor installation, replacement or repairs?

Many local flooring professionals offer digital payments to conduct transactions for floor repairs, installation, replacement and more. This trend has been increasing during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is prompting flooring professionals to take payments through Venmo, Square Cash, PayPal, Google Pay, Zelle and other convenient platforms.

To ensure you can safely pay for the service, contact the professional beforehand and ask which services are acceptable. Take any measures necessary to comply with guidelines on social distancing.

The team at absolute interiors was great from start to finish. Very responsive. I received a quote immediately and was quickly scheduled to get my hardwood floors on the first level replaced with new hardwood floors. When the team arrived, they made mention of the fact that my floor was very unleveled and had a significant dip in the middle. I thought I could not afford to level the floor and it would need to stay that way (i have an old house), but the team at absolute interiors said they could level out the floor for a very reasonable price. They returned the next day, and as promised, leveled out the floor and installed beautiful new hardwood floors. I will certainly use them for other home projects and have already recommended them to friends.

Josias did a beautiful job refinishing the original hardwood floors in our master bedroom which had been covered by carpet. He was able to match the stain to the new hardwood floors on the main level of our house and it is stunning! He is very hardworking and efficient and I would definitely recommend him if you are considering refinishing your floors. No job is too small for him and his prices are excellent.

I hired Traylor design to redo my hardwood floors in my condo. They had to remove the old floors from a concrete subfloor and glue down the new floors. Six months later, the floors still look great. Very good value, however some patience required.

Chicama came in to refinish/seal the hardwood floors on my 1920s condo before I moved in. Before they started the floors were in good condition but clearly scratched and worn. After they finished the color of the wood was richer, the floors scratch free and shiny, and I no longer have to worry about damaging them from every day use. These guys are fantastic!

Josias and his crew had a extremely big project with our home. We had horrible bamboo floors installed in our home in Cap Hill D.C. and needed Josias and his crew to remove everything and install new floors....a project I thought would have taken forever. They came in, worked very hard and did an incredible job. I wish I could show a photo of the new floors we had put in by Crafted Hardwood Floors. It was not an easy project, but these guys were there some days from 7:30am to 6:30pm. They were very polite and made sure our home was not destroyed during the project. I would definitely recommend Josias and Crafted Hardwood Floors for any flooring work because like I said, our job was strenuous and tough and they completed the job in 1 week. Thanks again for making our home look incredible!

Josias and Juan did and excellent job from start to finish. They refinished our hardwood floors in our historic home in Anacostia DC and transformed the look to complement the character of the home. The living and dining room and entrance hall we sanded and stained with a semi gloss water based finished. We paid extra for their help to move very heavy furniture and they went above and beyond to ensure each piece was back in place and even helped me do little things I couldn't bend to do because I'm expecting. Josias was very responsive and sent pictures of the progress along the way. They finished the floors in one day and I was able to walk on it that same night pretty much. It was bot a lot of dust like I expected. I highly recommend Crafted Hardwood Floors Inc. for your flooring needs. Exceptional customer service as well.

Working with Peter and his team was a great experience. He initially provided us a quote and opening acknowledged that these would be some adjustment once they opened up the floor. Lost of additional work needed to stabilize the floor. The additional work was very reasonable which could have been extremely expensive. This work added an additional day to the quoted time. I would highly recommend Peter and his team to complete any hardwood flooring project.

I definitely recommend Crafted Hardwood Floors to anyone seeking a professional flooring job. Josias is very courteous and competent; you can tell right away that he loves what he does and takes pride in his work. He arrived on time and took the time to find out exactly what we wanted. MidCounty Hardwood Floors LLC did an absolutely fantastic job on our hardwood floors. We had them refinish around 750 sq. ft. of hardwood floor and around 15 stairs. We have a heavy-duty built-in king-size bed with drawers which they had to dismantle and reassemble in order to access the floor. The bed was put back together without any harm. The price for the floor refinishing was really good, and the quality of the workmanship and communication was excellent. In addition, Kenia offered that she could also have her team cover our painting needs. We had several walls repainted and others touched up, we also had the painting team do several of our walls and all of the millwork in the living room and second bedroom. We had to add extra work to the contract at the last minute when we realized that the inside of several closets was in need of repainting, and Kenia worked fast to get us a quote for the additional work in less than 24 hours. They did a great job, and we are very happy with the work. Kenia was excellent at staying in touch and keeping us updated on the project which was completed on time, the apartment was left clean, and the work finished to great effect. The team were very friendly and polite. I would highly recommend Kenia and her team and will be calling on her should we need any such services again.

Josias' crew was one of the best home improvement/renovation companies we have worked with. We have a 1923 row house with solid oak wood floors. The floors have had years of abuse plus there were non-uniformly stained areas where we had a kitchen remodel. The crew arrived exactly on time, had the floors resurfaced by the end of the day, and then spent the second day working on custom stain matching and repair to ensure the best job possible. The floors look new and it was much more than I expected. I would recommend Crafted Hardwood Floors to anyone. Thanks for the hard work, Josias.

Happy with the work Llermis done - she came very quick to make en estimate and gave some really good advice how to save my ancient hardwood and paint it better. Team was very0very forgiving to my schedule and when in the beginning if the project I almost doubled the work for them ( my husband decided not only do the floors on the first floor, but on second as well) they've done almost impossible and agreed to help me. Floors and staircase they've done turned out to be beautiful. Restored natural colour if the old hardwood and made banister and staircase matching, what was really hard task in my place I have some more work to do and will ask same team to come to my house Great price and speed - they worked full days to make everything on time

I can highly recommend Forma Floors, and I only have positive things to say about them. Bruno is a great communicator and they installed hardwood floors in almost our whole house. The work was done very quickly and with quality. It only took 2 days and the guy was very attentive to details. This included baseboards too. Bruno was very accommodative and flexible, for example we had delays in the delivery of the second batch of our floors and he was patient and flexible to send his guys when whenever we needed it. When we had this delay with the other Floor Company through which we bought the floors, Bruno even tried to find the exact floors we were looking for through his own suppliers. I cannot be happier with an installation service and highly recommend it, we would hire them again if we need to install more floors!

Fantastic work by Randy and his team; they installed bamboo flooring in our town house, and we were very impressed with their responsiveness, reliability, professionalism, expertise, and ultimately the quality of their work! They patiently dealt with all the hurdles and bottlenecks that came up during the installation, were detail oriented, and worked extra hard to make sure that everything looked perfect. As an added bonus, they left the house clean and in perfect condition when they left. Their price is very reasonable too, both in general and given the quality of their work. I would not hesitate to hire FloorTechs again or recommend them to anyone looking to install hardwood, bamboo or other flooring. Thank you FloorTechs!

Carlos was very responsive and did a good job at a reasonable price restoring my house's 1937 original hardwood floor after they had gotten very scratched and beaten up. Check out the before and after photos for yourself! He was on time and completed the job on schedule. I only took off one star because his crew accidentally got a few drips of stain on the wall and sanded a few patches of paint off of my baseboards, but those are relatively easy fixes with a small pot of paint.
