Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

If you’re looking for an insured and licensed roofing contractor, these are the guys. They did a great job on my roof, took photos and showed me the progress. Best of all, they were extremely fair on the price.

Lucky and his son Anthony did an amazing job of finding the roof tiles (really hard to find) and fixing our cracked and missing roof tiles. They went the extra mile sealing everything and making sure that existing gaps are covered. I highly recommend them and will call them again when I need roof work.

Lee responded to my roof repair request immediately and we scheduled an appointment for an estimate. He came on time, got in the roof and told us exactly what is needed. He gave us a fair estimate and scheduled the work 2 days later. Lee worked for 2 full days and did all the repair needed. He was very pleasant, answered all questions and gave us 1.5 year warranty on the work. We highly recommend Lee for all your roof repair. It was a real pleasure working with him.

I’ve had 4 contractors give me estimates on my roof. They ranged from your roof is going to cave in, to, you only need patch work, to almost all of your shingles are loose. Mr Trifilos and his son were the only ones that were honest with me. He said “Don’t let anyone tell you, you need a new roof”! He will be replacing the transition next Thursday. This man is a blessing. Very hard to find an honest contractor these days. Glad I found ProTek! Thank you Mr Trifilos. I can rest easy tonight.

Danny from RoofSmith showed up on time and proceeded to evaluate my RE-roofing job. While I did have problems accessing RoofSmith proposal from Thumbtack website, when I got it the proposal was very professional & thorough. And my follow up communications with Danny have been very good.

Steve and Alex did a great job of communicating the issues I needed to repair, they quoted me a fair price for the amount of work and I was very pleased to receive images and videos of the repairs. They even went above and beyond and took down a broken hurricane shutter and cleaned the window underneath. I will definitely be using them for my future roof repairs.

Michael from Durham came out and provided a quote and was by far the lowest cost. He also drove 20 miles to my home to drop off a sample of the shingle so I can see it and provide it to my HOA for approval. I ended up not replacing the roof because I sold the home; but if there was another project I needed to complete I would call him again.

Lee laseter did an outstanding job. He quoted a fair price for a hard days work. All other quotes made me feel like I was being ripped off and they wanted to get rich on my small repair. I will gladly recommend Lee to anyone needing roof repair by an experienced honest person. All I can add is that we need more people in the service industry like Lee.
