We hired Vivian for our 50th anniversary party at the beach. The event lasted from Thursday night until Monday morning and involved 11 children and 16 adults. Vivian cooked three meals every day for us. Each night was a special treat from Spanish night, fish dinner night, and for the anniversary celebration, she fixed filet mignon and salmon. Everything was delicious! She was very thoughtful in catering to special needs, likes and dislikes of the guests and was well liked by the group. Because we were not at a home, she brought all the dishes, tablecloths, glasses and silverware. I would highly recommend Vivian. she is a true Personal Chef and not just a caterer.

Cheryl sets the bar wayyy to high for private chefs. Once you have had a private chef experience with her, you will never invite a different chef into your home or private event. From the moment I hired Cheryl for a surprise couple's dinner over Labor Day Weekend, she made it very clear that she aimed to provide a "blow you away" experience. First she designed the three course menu. I told her what I had in mind (lighter dinner - fish and seafood) and she instantly started providing her ideas with pictures of different dishes, different types of fish, sauces, presentation styles, etc. We agreed on a shrimp polenta cake w romesco sauce topped w sauteed carrots appetizer, an atlantic cod on a bed of smashed potatoes with olive and mushrooms, and a creme brulee. Our friends that we surprised with the meal both said it was one of the best meals they had ever had. We agreed. Leading up to the day of the event, Cheryl covered all the details. Since we were staying at a resort, she asked about everything from the type of dishes available to whether she should bring a tablecloth. She made wine recommendations, and even brought us a bottle for the dinner. The final presentation was perfect. Cheryl connected immediately with our group and was ready to impress - she got right to work when she arrived, but not after exchanging pleasantries and making sure that she knew her audience. All in all, Cheryl provides white glove customer service, has the most genuinely friendly and professional personality and is awesome to work with. She impresses from the moment you say YES, and even before that. Her cooking is delicious. It was a gourmet meal that we would have paid much, much, much more for at a reataurant, but she brought it to the comfort of our home (hotel). The presentation of the food was impressive, and everything was served with so much love. Cheryl takes great pride in what she does. We look forward to making Cheryl's cooking a part of our yearly tradition. I would never consider using anyone else. You will not be disappointed with Cheryl. Dont look any further - you have found your private chef for life. (I NORMALLY AM VERY LAZY ABOUT WRITING REVIEWS, BUT CHERYL PROVIDED SUCH AN IMPRESSIVE EXPERIENCE THAT I WOULD NOT FEEL GOOD NOT WRITING ONE)

The job was a luncheon for 30 after a funeral I had more then enough food as I miscalculated the number of people. The only thing I would do differently would have been to have Linda at the home prior to our return. Other than that the experience was very good the food was just as I had requested. Linda made recommendations and gave me several appetizer choices to choose from. I am glad I used a catering service as we did not have the time to prepare the food ourselves.

Dawn provided bar tending services for several of my functions which included a Halloween/B-day Party and office Christmas Parties. She is very attentive and alert and often had peoples names and drinks memorized 1/2 way through our parties. She is professional and charming and was always my first choice fr a bartender/party planner. I would highly recommend her and her services. I have known Dawn for over 12 years.

Chef Kim and Good Enuf 2 Eat Catering prepared a fantastic surprise 50th birthday dinner for 2 for one of my closest friends. The 4 course Thai meal was absolutely wonderful far exceeding my expectations. She arrived at the agreed upon time and dinner was actually served early. Each course was incredibly well presented and Chef Kim explained the fresh ingredients of each. Everything was so aromatic and the flavors from each course happily danced on our tongues. The kitchen was thoroughly cleaned when finished and she departed with a hug leaving us to enjoy the wonderful Petit Fois. I highly recommend Chef Kim and Good Enuf 2 Eat Catering for any catering event. I look forward to her catering my next event. Thank you Chef Kim for a fantastic experience!

Jenner really impressed us with her cooking. We live internationally and were in the Tampa-bay area for a few weeks this summer while having various friends and family visiting. So I could spend more quality time with them, I hired Jenner to prepare some meals for us each week, as sometimes we had as many as eight people visiting. She was very friendly and professional-always with a smile. She arrived on time and with all the ingredients needed...and my kitchen was always spotless when she left. Jenner worked effortlessly and quietly - but answered any questions we had as she went along. She cooked various types of meals for us over a 3-week period...from an amazing "New Orleans-style shrimp" boil that was to die for, to a finger-licking southern fried catfish, collard greens and macaroni and cheese meal. She also made sure to make some snacks for us to have in between the meals. She catered to our vegetarian requests when necessary. Every week she made us a superb dessert- my favorite was the upside down pineapple cake! But I must add that her guacamole is the best I have ever tasted and I am a Texan! The food she prepared was absolutely delicious and presented beautifully. (She also seems very knowledgeable about the Tampa area and when asked, gave recommendations to a few places-especially a great hair salon I now feel I cannot live without!) Jenner is a sweetheart and obviously very passionate about her work. She did an outstanding job preparing meals for us and surpassed our expectations. I definitely wouldn’t hesitate to hire Jenner again and look forward to working with her the next time we are in town!

Nancy's cooking is amazing. She is creative and will adjust recipes to suit your dietary needs. She prepared meals for my family during a time we were too busy to shop and cook, and there was such variety and freshness, it was hard to go back to reality! She is fun to work with on menus, and the perfect solution to your entertaining needs, too. No party without Nancy Gordon Fine Catering! We were sorry to see her move to Florida, but happy to know she will be back in the biz down there. The best!!

Tammy was great! My dog is a very senior dog and has many issues which is why I have not taken her to the groomer for so long like I used to and she was great with my grumpy old lady. She addressed her health issues prior to arrival and followed up after. Now my little old lady looks like a little teddy bear again! She is adorable an think she even feels better!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
