When I was looking for a caterer I was overwhelmed at first. Luckily, I got in touch with Brian who broke everything down to make it a much more enjoyable & stress free ordeal. I have seen first hand the scale of events Brian has been a part of catering for celebrities & presidents so I knew he was more than capable of bringing all my food ideas to fruition. Once we decided on the amount of people, a realistic budget & the types of food I liked & disliked we were quickly able to put together a menu. These offerings would not only cater to the budget, but also to the taste buds while simultaneously complimenting the venue. We did a food tasting where I got to sample the dishes we discussed, tweak anything I liked or disliked so we could guarantee a successful menu for our big event. Brian & his fellow Dade County Food Group team are top notch people whom I recommend for any food related event. You will not be disappointed.

Jeffrey was excellent! He worked with us on our lunch menu to accommodate the varying tastes of our meeting attendees. He showed up on time, had a very pleasant demeanor, and he cleaned up afterwards. Everyone commented on how good lunch was that we asked him to come back and prepare breakfast. Again, he was timely, brought everything he needed, cleaned up and breakfast was delicious. Thank you Jeffrey for making our two catered business meetings a positive and tasty experience! I highly recommend Jeffrey of Rosemary and Thyme Catering. A.W.

Thanks to Chef Paul and his team our wedding reception was absolutely perfect! The service was great from beginning to end. Paul came to our house and did a private tasting for my now husband and I. We were blown away. We decided to go with him for our special day. He always got right back to me with my several questions. And he had an answer for everything. He had his rental company match the lowest quote I could find for tables and chairs and totally worked with our budget. He talked about his menu and food items with so much passion. And you could taste that…. The food was great! All the guests were impressed! He was so flexible with my being a very indecisive bride. When we finally did decide on the menu…they delivered. The meats were tender and juicy. The veggies were not mushy and full of flavor. The cornbread was amazing. The macaroni and cheese was as gourmet as it gets and had bacon!! YUM! The comfort food isn't usually on their menu but they did it for me and they nailed it! ….and it was fancy! We had two buffet lines for 120 people with a server at every dish making it efficient and easy for our guests. There wasn't anyone who left hungry. The bartenders and staff were friendly and accommodating. We needed a dance floor very last minute over some cobblestone and they made that happen! They made everything happen even beyond the food! Not only would I highly recommend their catering…. I will most likely use them again! A huge thanks to The Dancing Palate from a very satisfied bride!

Absolutely happy with the service and food. I live in D.C and hosted my husband's 50th birthday bash in Miami, so I was a little skeptical about hiring a catering company that I knew nothing about. I took a chance and was not disappointed. Exquisite Catering cater the party on Saturday night and Brunch on Sunday morning feeding about 30 people. They arrived on time, very professional, and brought enough food to feed a small army. My guests could not stop raving about the presentation and how delicious the meals were. My server on Sunday went well above and beyond serving us. He was amazing. Please thank him again. If I'm every in the Miami area again partying, I will definitely call upon you to cater my party. Thanks a million.

I was chair person for a Kiwanis fundraiser. I hired The Catering Group to provide the buffet for 210 people. From the time I spoke to Alan, I knew I had made a wise choice. We did a tasting at my home and went from there. The food was delicious, the guests had many choices along with dessert and coffee. The presentation was nice and the personnel was helpful and professional. I highly recommend this caterer.

Stop looking for any other caterers and work with these ladies. I hired them to cater my sister's bachelorette/birthday party (20 people) and it was amazing! I asked for an authentic Cuban dinner and they DELIVERED. Everyone was raving about how delicious everything was and we had enough leftover to eat throughout the rest of the weekend (best drunk food ever!). They also went above an beyond and made me a chocolate cake to celebrate my sister's 30th. They even decorated the buffet to go along with our Cuban theme. They also told us about all of these amazing bars to visit while we were there. It was so helpful because none of us had ever been to Miami before. We had an absolute blast, and I can't wait to use them again if I'm ever in Miami! I wish I would've taken some photos of the buffet and the food, but 1) it was destroyed so quickly because everyone was starving. 2) I was so focused on how amazing this cake was (the photos aren't doing it justice)! Thank you again for everything, girls!

We just loved Laura and her employee. My son and his wife were having their wedding reception and did not want any alcoholic beverages to be served. They decided they wanted a smoothie bar. I am so happy I found Laura (LA Catering). First of all it was last minute and when I talked to Laura she assured me it would not be a problem. She arrived when promised and to my delight all the guests were raving about the smoothies. They were professional yet very cordial. I would recommend LA Catering for your next event. I can't wait to use them again in the future for other events.

I used Lori's catering services for a small get together and birthday party for about 30 people. Since I was a novice at party giving, Lori was very good about checking in with me along the way and making suggestions about both the menu and the setup. We had more than enough food which had been a particular worry of mine since I could not picture amounts. The party was for noon on a Sunday and I elected to do sort of a blend between a brunch and a lunch. In particular, the strata, mango salad and berry fruit salad were the most popular and I found that the dressings, sauces and spreads that accompanied the food were what added to the uniqueness of the ham, rolls and other salads. Everything was tasty and fresh. The delivery person was on time and helpful with food placement as it was a buffet style. The dishes were all set to go on platters and we supplied the serving utensils and beverages. I would certainly recommend Lori for whatever occasion you might need these services.

Chef Levita did a wonderful job catering my mother's 90th anniversary celebration for 15 people. The food was wonderful and the presentation lovely. He helped me make some very wise choices for my group which I also appreciated. These included summer rolls, sushi, sliced tenderloin, Casear salad, haricots vertes with garlic roasted potatoes and a wonderful, freshly-baked chocolate cake. He and his assistant Carlos made my gathering a great success.

Chef O is the best! and I'm not one to hand out praise very freely. The food was on point and very well executed (we should have ordered even more :) even though we were very well fed), service and attention to detail was top notch, and we felt like we were dealing with an old friend and not just a chef for hire. You won't regret using these guys. Thanks again chef! We will be using you again real soon.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
