Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

David was awesome! I called to get a quote because I had a leak and rain was a few days away. I got a quick response from Devin through the app. David came out to look at the roof and was able to repair it before the storm. The day after, I thought the roof was still leaking and David came out immediately to look at it. He gave me some tips on how to check and fortunately I was wrong...the spot was just cold, not wet, LOL! I was very stressed about the idea of trying to find a reputable company for roof repairs, but I am so glad that I chose Fidelis Roofing. David will always be my go to guy for any roofing issues. I highly recommend him!

I wanted to give 5 stars but here's why I only gave 2. The job was completed as expected; however, I am upset that before leaving the workers went back on my roof and supposedly took a picture of what was a large hole in my roof, stating it would cost me $400.00 to repair. I was furious at my Insurance agency because they had checked my roof and told me there were no problems. I called the insurance company, once again, they came out & spent over 2 hours checking my entire roof, boots, etc. and told me that there was NO HOLE, the roof was in excellent condition and should last for another 14 to15 years. This means I would have given away $400.00 for something that didn't need to be done. Dishonesty really turns me off.

I had a couple of leaks in my roof and one left a huge hole in my ceiling. Ultimate Contractors came out, found the problems and gave me an excellent price to repair the roof. I gave them the "GO AHEAD" to do the repairs and they got started immediately. After the work was started, they found some more issues that would eventually turn into problems and they let me know the additional cost to repair those also. They also repaired the holes in my ceiling and now all that I have to do is paint!

Terry and Manuel were professional, patient, and punctual in the work they performed on my house. I moved into a new house and discovered mold and water damaged inside of one of my walls. The leak was in a "dead valley" and required removal of water-damaged wood, undoing previously failed roofing attempts to address the leak, putting in underlayment, reshingling, and exterior siding replacement. The leak was extremely hard to find and took them several visits to locate it, however, they were open, honest, and consistently in contact with me throughout the entire process. Not once did I feel like they were misleading me or financially taking advantage of me. These guys went above and beyond my expectations in addressing my roof leak. I will continue to use them in the future.

The workman showed up on time, and secured our turbine vents and some loose nails. He told me about what he did and what was visualized on the roof. After completing the work he gave me instructions on the payment process; and they were very professional throughout the entire time, from scheduling to completion. Thanks Fidelis!

We just had a complete roof replacement done by Fowler Homes and couldn't be happier. In addition to a very competitive price, the work was performed in one day over the holiday period in near freezing weather. In spite of that the crew were superb and the quality of the overall job is excellent. I can happily give Fowler Homes the highest possible rating, they earned it. Ron Bell, Snellville, GA

Mr. Munoz came out to take a look at the roof; he took pictures of the affected areas and gave me an estimate which I felt was extremely affordable. Mr. Munoz was professional, honest, humble and loyal to his word. Miguel was such a sincere man, he started the repairs when he said he would and finished the job in a timely manner, and I felt like he was family. I enjoyed working with him and will recommend him to everybody. Mr. Munoz was a pleasant qualified individual who was extremely experienced. It was so nice to see that he was detailed with his work: he cleaned up and carried everything off with him. Upon his departure he told me not to hesitate if I needed him to return for any reason. When the job was complete he showed me photos of what he had done and assured me that the problem was fixed. Choosing Miguel for this job was the best decision I could have ever made, and I was so happy with his expertise. Thank you so much Miguel for a job well done I give you 100 stars for your hard work and dedication. It is so hard to find someone who is honest and take pride in what they do. Wonderful Job!
