Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a flooring professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To safely set up a consultation or appointment with a flooring professional and avoid the risk of transmitting COVID-19, start with an online search. Contact the professional through a message and ask to set up a video or phone call to discuss the project. This lets the professional visualize what needs to be done without physically needing to be there. Discuss the project’s timeline, budget, virtual payment capabilities and adherence to guidelines set forth locally and by the CDC.

How can I find out if a flooring professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a flooring professional is considered an essential service in the current coronavirus pandemic, consult your city or state’s government website. To get a sense of the national recommendations, check CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage

This page lists 16 different infrastructure sectors that are officially considered essential during this time. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure. Ultimately, you should consult with your local government.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a flooring professional when social distancing?

If you hire a flooring professional for an outdoor project, you may be able to avoid person-to-person contact with the pro. If you hire a pro for an indoor job, avoid physical contact, sanitize surfaces and use virtual payments like PayPal, Venmo, Google Pay and Square Cash App to complete transactions instead of using cash or checks. Determine a strategy with the flooring professional when you contact them.

Can I use digital payments to pay for floor installation, replacement or repairs?

Many local flooring professionals offer digital payments to conduct transactions for floor repairs, installation, replacement and more. This trend has been increasing during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is prompting flooring professionals to take payments through Venmo, Square Cash, PayPal, Google Pay, Zelle and other convenient platforms.

To ensure you can safely pay for the service, contact the professional beforehand and ask which services are acceptable. Take any measures necessary to comply with guidelines on social distancing.

Does a flooring professional need to enter my home?

If the flooring project is located inside your residence, performing the job would require the flooring professional to enter your home. This is not recommended by the CDC during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, if a flooring project takes place in a separate location outside of your home, the flooring professional will not need to enter your home.

Talk to flooring professionals in your area to see if it’s necessary for them to enter your home. If so, you might want to postpone the project until social distancing guidelines are relaxed by the government.

Do flooring professionals offer remote or virtual services?

Because flooring work has to be done in-person, flooring professionals are typically unable to perform work virtually. If you come across a pro's profile that states they're offering remote services, message the pro to see what those services include.

If you plan to get indoor flooring installed once the pandemic is over, you can ask potential flooring specialists if they host virtual consultations through video calls and digital messaging. Compare flooring professionals in your area online to find the right fit, and book an appointment.

What is the best flooring for dogs?

Waterproof or scratch-resistant flooring is typically the best flooring for dogs. This includes:

  • Vinyl: Vinyl may not add much to the value of your home, but it is resistant to scratching, stains, dents and accidents. Plus, it’s an affordable option.
  • Tile: Tile is generally water-resistant and scratch-proof, and more affordable than hardwood or stone.
  • Laminate: Laminate is not truly waterproof, but it is tough and often more scratch-resistant than other wood floorings.

Remember that solid hardwood is susceptible to damage, including dents, scratching, licking and accidents. But if you want to install wood floors, the best hardwood floors for dogs are typically made out of maple, Brazilian walnut or bamboo.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

The national average cost to install flooring is $5,500, with prices ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 . Your cost can be much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select, the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed.

Here are some examples of floor installation costs, depending on the material:

What's the best flooring for basements, kitchens and bathrooms?

When installing flooring in your home, keep in mind that some materials are better suited for certain rooms while others are not. Use this guide to help you make the best decision for your home.

Best Flooring for Basements

Basement flooring should be highly resistant to moisture, as many basements are below grade. Choosing the best flooring for basement spaces depends on what they’ll be used for. For example:

  • An epoxy basement floor is a durable finish for concrete.
  • Vinyl basement flooring is generally waterproof or water-resistant.
  • Laminate floors can be an affordable option, but they’re often not 100% waterproof.
  • Ceramic tile floors are also water-resistant.

If your basement isn’t moist, carpet tiles are also an option — just make sure to use a moisture barrier.

Best Flooring for Kitchens

Kitchen flooring does more work than almost any floor in the house, so you’ll want to choose a durable floor. The following are among the best flooring types for kitchens:

  • Porcelain tiles can be fashionable, moisture-resistant, and cost less than stone or wood to install.
  • Vinyl flooring can withstand dents, is generally inexpensive and it’s easy to install.
  • Linoleum flooring can be durable, easy to maintain and affordable.
  • Wood flooring could be damaged by dropped pots and pans, furniture and pets. However, hardwood and engineered wood floors in kitchen spaces are still popular among homeowners.

Best Flooring for Bathrooms

Bathroom flooring must withstand high moisture levels while also being comfortable on bare feet. Here are some of the best flooring options for bathrooms:

  • Porcelain tiles are generally comfortable, waterproof, stylish and less costly than stone or wood.
  • Vinyl flooring is waterproof, cost-effective and can imitate wood convincingly.
  • Natural stone can be expensive, but it’s typically hard and durable.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.

We had Procare stain and refinish our floor and it was outstanding! The floors were professionally done as they look like brand new floors versus refinished floors and the service was excellent as they completed it quickly and with zero complications. Add to the fact the cost was very competitive and I would 100% recommend Procare for anyone and use them again.

Peter is amazing, I can't recommend him highly enough! Came for the quote on Monday, on Friday we had brand new refinished floors! Quote was very reasonable for this quality of work. He and his partner did a great job, we're simply in love with our floors. They look stunning! Also, he was very patient answering all questions (we had plenty) and took his time showing us different color samples. I'm so impressed with the result that I think we're going to refinish our 3rd floor although we didn't plan it. Thank you so much!

I am very happy about my experience with Radu. The only think I regret is not staining along with the floor refinishing. I wish they had encouraged me to stain as well to insure the coloring stayed consistent. Very nice folks to work with though.

Martin did an excellent job refinishing our 100 year old oak floors. Others said they had to be replaced and couldnt be refinished, Martin from day one said exactly what he could do and replaced bad boards as well. His price was very good and was able to fit the job in on relatively short notice. At job completion they left the condo in excellent clean condition. A trustworthy dependable professional true to his word. Thank you.

IDC flooring was the most professional and satisfying experience we have had to date in the seemingly endless remodel of our fixer-upper home. Peter put creativity and intelligence into troubleshooting the refinishing of our complicated flooring project. We tore down walls, which left gaps in the original flooring, we didn't have uniform types of wood throughout the first floor (oak, maple and pine), and we had holes and and weird patching from the previous owners. I never thought the floors would look good, and was sure I would have to put in a whole new floor. No other flooring specialists put the thought into the job that Peter did, AND his bid came in under that of others. Lastly, his crew was nothing but professional. They came in, taped our shelves and kitchen off with efficiency, and were in and out in two days, as promised. The floors look BEAUTIFUL! Do not give up on your original floors. Go with IDC.

Vasile’s team did a good job in refinishing our floors. -he gave us a very reasonable price -he made suggestion as to which coating would be best, only tells me how much experienced he has -he completed the project on time -he was very responsive to our questions and concerns -no extra charge for small favors -we asked if he can sample the stains so that we can pick, he did it without complaints -the refinished floors were perfect, I couldn’t be more impressed. Even the corners of the walls, cabinets were perfectly done. I would recommend him and his team. If only we weren’t committed to another team for the remodeling of my bathroom, I would have had Vasile’s team do it.

We bought a house and wanted to refinish our hardwood floors. We had multiple contractors come out and bid. When Peter came to look at our floors and give us an estimate he took one look and within 5 seconds said "you have damage right there", and pointed to a spot where indeed, there was damage. He was the only one to notice it. Peter and his crew were timely, courteous and professional. They began first thing in the morning and stayed long after 5 for the days it took to do the project. And the project? Gorgeous, stunning, amazing. We love the result. We highly recommend Peter and Studio Floors for your flooring needs.

Is it possible to give more than 5 stars? We hired MD Construction to refinish the floors of our newly bought condo. It was done in just a week with no delays. Ion was punctual, responsive, and overall just a great guy. The final floors looked amazing! As first-time home owners, we didn't have much experience with redecorating, but Ion was patient helping us pick out colors and answer any questions we had. The price was also less than the estimate, which was a nice surprise. All in all, a great experience! We would 100% hire MD Construction and Ion again for our next floor project.
