Basement Finishing or Remodeling

Lauren S. says, "Majestic Drywall is the ONLY company we will hire for drywall moving forward. Period. Jorge is the kind of contractor you hope to hire but rarely seem find. His craftsmanship, attention to detail, great communication, availability and flexibility all surpassed our expectations. We had a very large wall covered in wood that needed to be removed and skimcoated to match the rest of the walls in our late 70s home. The real challenge became an AC mini split unit 16’ up the wall attached to the wood. We agreed the AC unit would need to be detached by an HVAC professional for Jorge to do his job. After dozens of phone calls to HVAC companies and estimates for their work coming in HIGHER than the cost to drywall, Jorge offered to try removing the wood without detaching the unit to see if we could avoid taking it down. Unfortunately, it became impossible to get any further without removing it, so Jorge made a bunch of phone calls on our behalf to folks in his circle and we had an HVAC pro come out the next day for $150 to take it down. Jorge was starting a big project the following week but didn’t let our setback push the timeline. He just got the job done and even went above and beyond to correct up a few small areas of bad drywall patching in other areas done over the years. I honestly wish Jorge did more than drywall because I’d hire him for every home project we could. He’s so nice to chat with our finished wall looks fantastic. I’ve already recommended him to many others. Look no further for your drywall needs than Majestic Drywall. You won’t regret it."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best waterproof flooring for a basement?

There are several great options for waterproof basement flooring. For example, epoxy floors are waterproof but are thicker and sturdier than paint. Make sure the concrete substrate has been prepared for application.

Tile is a designer’s dream, giving you a moisture-resistant surface that’s infinitely customizable. Rubber sheets or tiles are also good waterproof options, particularly for playrooms, workout areas or laundry rooms.

Vinyl tiles and planks imitate wood or other materials very convincingly, provide moisture resistance and last a long time. And sheet vinyl is affordable and a great waterproofing solution for those in need of quick fixes.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

Does a general contractor need to enter my home?

Provided the project is located inside your home, completing the job would require a general contractor to enter your home. But if your project is located outdoors, a general contractor will likely not need to enter your home. Discuss your options with general contractors in your area before hiring.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a general contractor when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a general contractor, avoid any physical contact, don’t shake hands, keep 6 feet of distance between you and the pro and sanitize all involved surfaces. Also, use digital platforms to communicate and make payments.

How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

JG and Curtis of Made Right Builders do great work! They turned our unfinished basement that was just an empty weight room into a framed bedroom with an egress window. They worked as quiet as possible in the basement to make sure the rest of our house was not in a construction zone while they were working.

Kyle was a complete pleasure to work with. He was always most concerned with what I wanted and if I wad happy with everything throughout the entire process of finishing my basement. If I had a concern or question, he addressed it right away and always communicated in a timely manner about any issues that may have come up. The finished product is exactly what I had in mind, only better! We are loving our new space~

We recently suffered water damage from a leaky refrigerator and the June storms and needed a contractor to repair the damage to our basement. I had a difficult time finding someone to complete the work...until I found Anaid Enterprises! LeRoy contacted me immediately to schedule an estimate. He showed up promptly for the estimate and had a detailed estimate to me in less than 24 hours. After a previous bad contractor experience I was a little nervous about hiring someone else. LeRoy laid all my fears to rest. He took care of my house as though it was his own. He provided me step by step updates and communicated with me the whole time. I appreciated the attention to detail and his commitment to the job. He was fully present from beginning to end. I am so happy to have such a genuine, detail-oriented, honest, competent, professional contractor in our community. I recommend Anaid Enterprises to anyone looking to have quality work done on your home.

Do not hire these people! •Stole our money: They asked for payment well in advance of work being completed and walked off job after collecting 77% payment and only completing 57% of the work (Certified by an architect) - essentially stealing thousands of dollars from my family. •We received threats: They didn't pay their subs in full so the subs came after us. The subs (two large guys) showed up to our house at 10pm demanding payment and threatening to put liens on my house unless I paid them cash. Diana and LeRoy were nowhere to be found and did not help us at all with the situation. •Strange Hours: The same subs were working in our basement in the middle of the night (8pm - 6am) keeping us up when we needed to work the next day on two different occasions. •Behind Schedule: The job was promised to be done in one month, after three months they walked off the job with only 57% of the work completed. •Sub-par work: There are numerous holes in the drywall, paint overspray, incorrect installation of trim, doors that don't fit in the frame, cabinet doors that don't open, electrical wires smashed under supports, fingerprints in the drywall mud, trash everywhere, incorrect materials (carpet), cabinets and lights installed in the wrong places, •Poor Management: All of the subs were coming to us to ask questions about the job instead of Diana and Leroy coming to the job site to explain the project and manage the subs. •Avoiding Communication: There were several weeks during the project where Diana and LeRoy did not respond to calls, texts or emails. Several times I followed up a verbal conversation with an email to confirm what we had agreed upon and they never responded. •Nickel and Dime: The estimate the gave us was very vague and when we asked them to do normal "turn key" work they tried to charge extra: painting ceiling a different color, kitchen back-splash versus counter-splash, modifying kitchen cabinets so they open, scribing trim, charging extra for materials inconsistently from one project to the next. •Court: I had to take them to court and the judge sided with me a issued a judgement that Anaid owes me over $4,500. Nightmare! Pics show how the basement was left unfinished and how it is now that I hired someone else to finish the job.
