Gerald and his crew were prompt and thorough. And a great deal too. The roofers climbed on roof to find leak and in the attic to locate the area. They were excellent at describing the area of damage and how they would fix the problem. They fixed the rood in no more than 30 minutes. The shingles matched our old shingles and the job looks great. We will be using them again in the future.

Contacted Thumbtack very early in a.m. and Joshua, at Full Soec Home Repair responded immediately. He was at my home 2 hours later, when the sun came up and immediately saw problem causing my roof to leak. He made repairs and was very affordable. So very polite. I would certainly use his services again.

This is the 2nd time I have hired Nick, and happy I did so. He did a great job laying new floors in 2 of my bathroom's. He repaired damage I had done from a flood caused by my master bathroom upstairs. He went above and beyond to make sure I was happy with all his work. He did some painting repair, popcorn ceiling repair, installed 2 brand new toilets, installed a new fan, and fixed damage in my garage. I highly recommend Nick Gillaspie. I will be using his services in the future. He makes home ownership for single person easy and is very affordable compared to many other quotes I have received. Thank you.

Bob the Builder is amazing. Prompt, courteous, never left a mess in the room where he built a closet and repaired seams in drywall. Affordable, quality work by a true professional. The cost of materials was true - not increased for his profit. We plan to use him again for other projects as our budget permits.

This was a new experience for me; hiring a contractor out of the blue through an online service (Thumbtack). This was NOT an insurance claim. It was out of pocket for a new roof. I tend to not trust contractors that don't come highly recommended to me but I could not find a recommendation from someone I trust. So this was a bit of leap of faith. Not going to get into the quote process or why I chose Grayco other than to say that their price was very competitive and they agreed to do extra work on the roof, discussed prior to quoting that the other companies excluded or wanted too much $$ for it. Some required a deposit to purchase materials. My decision was a good one. I stayed home the day of the work so my review is from first hand experience. Tom, the salesmen, was there on site for nearly then entire time the roofers were there. What salesman does that? The installers did everything they could to protect my property and landscaping with large tarps. They had a little more than they bargained for when they realized they didn't bring enough roof decking to replace all the rotten places(12 sheets required). My 20 year old house was in worse shape than anyone expected. Tom jumped in one of the installers vans and ran to Lowes to pick up more wood. What salesman does that? He also moved some material from the front yard to the back to help his guys out. What salesman does that? The install went smoothly, all the work looks great. They re-flashed the chimney, properly this time, did the extra work I asked them to do, painted the white vent pipes black to match the roof better and re-installed the satellite dish perfectly positioned (no re-calibration needed). Little things that make a difference. After cleaning up and had everything loaded on their vans they spent a lot of time running magnets over the lawn and driveway to pick up stray nails. A lot of time. I'm not a neat freak but this kind of attention speaks to the professionalism of the crew and the desire to do a thorough job. It was much appreciated. Bottom line: I love my new roof. Very pleased with the install process and can, without hesitation, recommend Grayco. They did a very good job.

Jonathan and his crew were on time, efficient, affordable and professional. I requested a painter in my area less than 24 hours ago (late on a Sunday night, mind you) he was the first to respond and the most professional to deal with. Not only has my request been met but my needs have been met as well. I would highly recommend these guys for any job you may have around the house. I will be using his services again here in the near future.

Earl Bowman, owner of Total Roofing, is a good guy and is easy to work with and provided excellent follow-up and communications throughout my roofing project. I bought and distressed classic mid-century modern home with extensive roof damage which was a very large project involving replacement of an old tar and gravel residential flat roof. The roof had long term neglect and required extensive reconstruction of decking and overhanging cantilever eaves. I was not impressed with the carpender, to be honest, he chose to work on my project. He was deliberately slow, unorganized and not particularly skillful. However, Earl stuck with him and hired additional people to get him through the project to his credit without sacking him, which would have benefited the whole project and cost of the project. The other folks, the roofers were excellent, hardworking, conscientious, and skillful. The project ran over budget and required more than a few weeks to complete...again, largely due in part to the carpender and the hidden elements of this poorly maintained roof. In summary, Earl and his company were true to their word. He completed a very difficult project professionally and with class. My prior experiences with roofers were not good but he is a good guy and very different than the lot of his trade. I would highly recommend him.

Roger and Donnie did a fantastic job. I posted my request and the first contact was made quickly. They came out the same day to give me and estimate and completed the work! I am impressed by their professionalism and knowledge in many areas. They fixed the problems that another roofing company had made and educated me on many items concerning the roof, sky lights, insulation, roof venting and even gave some advice on another issue I am having at my home. Will use them again for any of my roofing and guttering needs!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
