Nolan was able to come to my house on the same day as my inquiry. I needed a new kitchen sink faucet installed to replace a broken one. I was able to disassemble the existing fixture but there was a particular rusted out bolt that I could not undo. Nolan came the next day and was able to remove the bolt and install the new plumbing fixture all under an hour. He is a professional and I enjoyed his method of working; I got a kick out of how he electronically documents the steps involved and posting on Instagram – modern day tech! I will definitely use his services again in the future and don’t hesitate to use him. Based on his cool website, I knew he was going to be a good choice!

Our main waterline to our house broke and we did the digging of the line and found the leak but were stuck with how to plug it. Called Joe and sent him a few pictures and he showed up with his team after dark and got the job quickly. Joe is very personable as well as professional. I have never had such a pleasant experience when dealing with a plumber. I defiantly will be calling Joe the Plumber for all future plumbing needs. John Mahan Kent, WA.

James gave me a very reasonable quote, and he installed a new water heater in my house yesterday. This was a tough job - a tiny space barely big enough to accommodate the heater, and awkward plumbing that had to be largely re-done in order for the heater to fit the space. It ended up being a longer, more difficult process than either of us bargained on, but James toughed it out and got it done. Despite the fact that the job was more complicated than we had originally anticipated, and required a lot more work than I think he was planning on, he did not attempt to charge me more than he had originally quoted (although I insisted on paying him extra because he certainly earned it). James is going to be my go-to guy for plumbing from now on.

Coming home from vacation, our front lawn was pooling what I thought was rain, but a broken water pipe. I called Plumbing Masters NW and had them come out and see the extent of the damage and see what they would be able to help me. They gave me option, to repair or to replace. What I liked about these guys, they're very honest and transparent about their pricing. After we decided to go with the replacement, Rob and his team rolled up their sleeves and got to work. There were city permits and other things that needed to be done, but Rob took care of all of it. They kept me in the loop throughout the whole entire repair job, which was nice. The job took about 2 days, and Mark and Rob's son Jr, made sure we had water everyday by rerouting the water for us. They even came on a Sunday to get things done. At the end, they stayed right on with the estimate they gave me and we were very satisfied with their work. I would not hesitate to hire them again. Hopefully not for the same repair. They really strive for customer satisfaction, and was much appreciated! Thank you Rob and the team!

Fantastic! Art showed up right on time, I told him the details of the problem, and he knew exactly what to do. Took him mere minutes to fix it, because he clearly has the knowledge and experience to handle what the big-name guys swore would be hundreds of dollars, even though I knew it was a simple job for a plumber. See, every place I called before using this app was just predatory, treated me like some dumb broad who doesn't know anything about plumbing. Art was the opposite: honest, straightforward, and reasonable. He quoted me a reasonable price, and verified it when he inspected the plumbing situation. And the price he quoted was never inflated with add-ons or other sneaky ways people can bleed you. He was friendly, professional, punctual, and offered a good value for the job. Absolutely recommend! Next time I need a plumber, I'm calling Art!

Chris was extremely responsive. I made an appointment for another plumbing issue, but the day before Chris was supposed to be at my house, my sewer blocked. Chris arranged to squeeze additional time to fix blockage. He explained everything that he was doing and cost. Price was reasonable. Chris was a true savior! I would recommend Chris any time.

Hassan provided outstanding service from start to finish. From the first phone call, listening to our plumbing problem, saying that he would be able to fix our issue, great communication about setting up a time that would work for both of us, giving us a quote, following through, quality work, and just an all around nice guy. We are so glad that we gave H2flow a call. We like to look at reviews and unfortunately couldn’t find any because Hassan is so new to our area. We will definitely call Hassan for any future plumbing needs.

My husband and I couldn't have imagined how wonderful the job TJ and Marvin did for us!! We hired them to - pretty much gut our backyard and deck - remodeling everything for us. They treated or job as if it was their own home. It was so much more than what we hoped for. I would - in a heartbeat - recommend them to anyone. The beautiful work they did for us will be enjoyed for years to come. They leveled our backyard, planted new sod, installed all new fencing, built patio with a fire pit. They tore down and built a new, enlarged deck that wraps around the side of our house. They took out our bedroom window and installed sliding doors to the new deck which looks out onto a beautiful wetland. They installed a new ceiling fan. When we moved into our house 5 years ago, our furnace was in one of our bathrooms. Due to the design of the bathroom, there was no way to cover the opening to the furnace - leaving it an eye sore. They took our the door to the bathroom and installed a smaller door - leaving them room to install a beautiful - barn door style door - closing the opening to the furnace. In the future, any remodeling to our home will be easy, all we'll do is call TJ and Marvin!! If I could, I'd give them 6 plus stars!!

I have found The Handyman Seattle to be very helpful in maintaining my 100-year-old house. Much of the small stuff I can do myself, but I don't do plumbing and electric. Or roof. Jonathon was recently very helpful in putting in a new doorbell. One of the reasons I like Handyman Seattle is that they show up on time. I'm sure I will be calling again.

Ray was a thorough professional and his quality of work was exceptional. I called in Ray for an estimate on a small project in my living room, and the work he performed was beyond satisfactory. I therefore used Ray’s services to get my living room and bathroom completely remodeled. Ray seems to be good and knowledgeable in all departments of work – Flooring / electrical work / plumbing / painting / carpentery etc. He had suggested great ideas and the outcome looked fantastic. He was punctual and would accomplish a ton of work each day. I would certainly recommend him highly to family and friends, besides hiring him myself for other work that I may have. I have attached before / After pictures from my living room remodeling.

Mark was very responsive. Came by to give us a quote for the work straight away. We scheduled the job a few days later. Mark showed up on time and did a great job replacing some old galvanized iron pipes with copper. Didn't charge us extra even though the job was more complicated than what we anticipated (a piece of old pipe we weren't planning to replace broke off). Everything works great now and we are very happy. Thanks!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
